Dear Foothills Servants and Friends --
I have been in consultation with our council and executive committee since Tuesday evening about our current Covid-19 protocols and ways in which Lutheran Church of the Foothills could mitigate risk factors to the best of our capabilities. Under the current conditions in our health care system, it is a faithful response to do our part in avoiding adding further unnecessary strain.
With this in mind, our worship services will undergo the following temporary adjustments until the local transmission and hospital numbers are at a more reasonable level.
  • We will more strongly encourage the practice of physical distancing between households.
  • We will resume the practice of receiving your offerings as you enter the worship space.
  • We will encourage you to pass the peace verbally with those closest to you, rather than moving throughout the worship space.
  • We will decrease the amount of singing, which will in turn also shorten slightly the time we are gathered together.
  • We will take a break from our special music with wind instruments. Although they offer a richness and beauty to worship that we are blessed to have, they place both the musicians and listeners at increased risk during this time.
These changes, even if they feel disruptive, may be the difference that allows us to safely remain gathering in person. Thankfully we also have the option for you to continue to worship with us from home if that is safest for you.
We pray for the health and safety of our community, our health care system employees, and all those who are being daily impacted by this spike in Covid-19 cases.
~ Faithfully, Pastor Naomi

At this time of COVID19, please be sure the ushers check your name on the attendance roster so that we can do contact tracing were anyone to test positive for the virus. Remember to maintain social distancing. Masks are required whenever you are meeting with others in the building.

Children in Worship. We are happy to invite children into worship, as long as they are masked. If you are bringing children with you to church, please be sure that their names, as well as yours, are recorded on our sign-in sheet (for purposes of contract tracing, should that become necessary). There is a Kids' Korner in the back of the sanctuary for our youngest worshipers and their adults, if they wish to use it.

Please be advised, when you enter a Lutheran Church of the Foothills worship service, you will be entering an area where photography, video and audio recording may occur. If you do not wish to be seen on the live stream of the worship service, it is best to sit in the section closest to the camera, the far right chairs as you enter the sanctuary.

Discussion Eucharist Worship at 8:00 a.m. Discussion Eucharist in-person-only worship meets in the Learning Center. Holy Communion is available, but there is no music. Attendees need to be masked and socially distanced; attendance is tallied by name. Scott Warren is our worship and gospel discussion leader. All are welcome to this early morning in-person-only worship service.

Annual Meeting ~ January 30, 2022

All people who participate at Lutheran Church of the Foothills are invited to our Annual Congregational Meeting to be held on Sunday, January 30, 2022, immediately after the 10:00a worship service (approximately 11:15a). The meeting will be in person unless you are notified differently; you also have the option of joining by livestream.
All are invited to participate in the meeting, but only those who attend in person and whose status is "Active" are eligible to vote. (If you have any questions about your voting status at LCF, please contact the church office.)
Reports on 2021 ministries and activities are due January 15 for inclusion in the Annual Reports booklet to be distributed in advance of the meeting.
~ Laura Hollengreen, Council President.

Your vote will be needed on LCF Constitution and Bylaws changes. At our annual congregational meeting coming up after worship on January 30, two of the items on the agenda will be (1) a revised constitution and (2) revised bylaws. To familiarize yourself with the changes you will be asked to vote on, please click on the links below. You will also find a printed copy of the suggested revisions in a three-ring binder on the Activities Counter in the lobby. If you have any questions or comments, please let me know. My preference is to resolve any issues or questions before the annual meeting. ~ Bryan Daum.

Your vote will also be needed on the election of fellow Servants to serve in various positions within the congregation.
We have the following Council positions that will need to be filled (near the bottom of this email is a list of current council members):
  • Vice President - 1
  • Treasurer - 1
  • Members-at-Large - 2
The following committees and boards also have positions to be filled:
  • Endowment Fund - 2
  • Memorial Garden - 1
  • Nominating - 3
  • Synod Assembly voting members - 2*
Changes are on the horizon, and this is an exciting time to serve the congregation as Pastor Naomi gets to know us and we get to know her and her family. If you would like to be nominated for any of these positions or have questions, please contact Bruce Rianda ([email protected] or 520-977-5611). You may also contact Rosemarie Schulz or Don Schultz.

*The 2022 Grand Canyon Synod Assembly will be Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11, at Love of Christ Lutheran Church in Mesa. The theme is “Stirred Up by the Spirit.” All interested people are invited to attend this Assembly, but only those two people who we elect as Synod Voting Members at our Annual Meeting and our Pastor will be eligible to vote from our congregation.

—IN OUR PRAYERS—
We pray for . . . Ray League (Stewart McDonald & Leslie Johnson's nephew); Colene Beck (Donna Cousino's friend); Lonnie Jenkins; people recovering from natural disasters; and all those affected by the COVID-19 virus. Names will remain on the prayer list for three weeks unless otherwise notified.

We pray in Christian love and sympathy for Dakota Worden and her family after the death of her grandfather, Tom Dameron, on January 8.

—COMMUNITY SERVICE—
This coming Friday is Primavera Men's Shelter Dinner. January 21 is our date to provide dinner for approximately 160 men who are staying at the Primavera Men's Shelter. To participate, please sign up on the clipboard on the east end of the Activities Counter in the Lobby. As of publication time, we still need: rolls for 32 men; desserts for 64 men; and one jug of laundry detergent. Bring your contributions to the church by 1:00p on January 21; please put a checkmark beside your name after you've brought in your contribution. Thanks. ~ Community Service Team.

Our annual sponsorship of Poz Café is coming up on the third Thursday in February (with two other faith communities). Remember that pre-COVID we were able to volunteer at Poz Café for the day to prepare and serve the meal, greet and visit with the guests and help with Bingo. For the second year in a row we will not be able to be there in person but only in spirit. We will still collect personal care items and Bingo prizes. Personal care items are items that cannot be purchased with food stamps. These simple gifts also remind the guests that we care and accept them for who they are. Items to be collected during January are:
  • toilet paper,
  • paper towels,
  • dish washing liquid,
  • new bath towels,
  • new kitchen towels,
  • new pot holders, and
  • gift certificates to Target, Walmart, Fry’s ($10-$15).
Thrivent members can use their Action Grants to purchase these items. Items may be brought to church by January 30. Place them under the TIHAN display in the lobby. You may also donate by check (made payable to Lutheran Church of the Foothills) or cash; please note "TIHAN" on your donation or use the special "Monthly Community Service" envelopes on the table in the lobby. Any monetary donations and Sunday Dollars will be used to sponsor our share of the meal and purchase extra items if needed. Thank you for your continued support. ~ Beth Daum, Community Service Team.

Interfaith Community Services (ICS). Please donate non-perishable food items for the ICS food bank. Items always needed include Mac 'n cheese; Peanut butter (14-16 ounces); Spaghetti; Spaghetti sauce; Chili; Ravioli; Canned meals; Canned meats, tuna, chicken; Soup; All kinds of canned foods (pull-tabs preferred on cans); Breakfast cereal; and Jams and jellies. The bin for these non-perishables is at the west end of the Activities Counter. If you would prefer to give a monetary donation make checks payable to Lutheran Church of the Foothills, mark your donation “ICS,” and put it in the Sunday offering basket. Thank you for donating much needed food to ICS! ~ Sheryl Perry, Community Service Team.

—CLASSES & OFFERINGS—
Thursday Journey is offered in-person and via Zoom. "The Divine Drama: The Biblical Narrative" is a 16-unit course that will take you on a journey through the Bible's big story. After an introduction we begin with Genesis, work our way through the rest of the Torah, then into the Kingdoms, the prophets, the intertestamental period, and finally into the New Testament. Join us at 10:00a Thursday mornings in person in the Activities Room and online via Zoom each week through April 14 (Maundy Thursday of Holy Week). This Thursday Journey course is led by fellow-Servant, the Rev. Stewart McDonald. Zoom Meeting ID: 825 4919 2306; Zoom Passcode: 640019.

Read & Yak book discussion group continues to meet online using Zoom. On January 22 beginning at 10:00a, Leslie Johnson will lead us in a discussion of "The Scarlet Letter," by Nathaniel Hawthorne. To obtain the Zoom sign-on information so you can join the discussion, contact Leslie or email Holly Hope at [email protected].

—LIFE TOGETHER—
2021 Contribution Statements will be available this Sunday, January 16, and Sunday, January 23. Our Interim Administrative Assistant, Leslie Johnson, also has access to the Statements if you want to come by the church during the week to pick up your giving statement. Please let Leslie know you will be coming by so she can have your statement ready for you to pick up. ~ Bryan Daum.

The Rev. Naomi Hartman will be installed as our called Pastor on Sunday, February 6, 2022, at 2:00p (that is the Sunday after our Annual Meeting). The community will be invited and Grand Canyon Synod Bishop Hutterer will lead this special service.

Please get in the habit of wearing your name badge to all events at church (receptions, coffee hours, classes) so newcomers--including the Hartman family--can get to know your names. If you would like a name badge, sign up on clipboard on the kiosk in the lobby.

January/February issues of Living Lutheran monthly magazines and Christ in Our Home quarterly devotional booklets are now available in the lobby. Read how Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service and their partners are welcoming Afghan Allies. Enjoy daily devotionals written by various people associated with our denomination. These resources are provided for you by this congregation at no cost to you.

Treasures, Trinkets, and Silent Auction will not be held this year. Guild voted at its December 7 meeting to not hold this annual fundraising event in 2022.

Are you a fellow Servant looking for a way to be more active in our faith community? Have you thought about helping prepare the communion and altar?  Worship Preparation is a simple way to serve. Since we are still using the pre-packaged communion, it is a quick and easy set up and clean up. What do you do? Arrive to church about 25 minutes early to set out the communion, set up the altar with the items for consecration, clean up after Service, take linens home to launder. There are helpful hints posted in the Sacristy. A sign up sheet is on the Activities Counter in the lobby (please sign up for a whole month if possible). Any questions or comments, talk with Beth Daum.

Proceeds from your pocket change that are put into our Hunger Loose Change Jar (on the stand inside the entrance to our worship area) are shared with our church’s World Hunger program. Many thanks for your generosity! Thanks also to our counters, Charles & Pat Erickson. December Total: $105.50.

Sunday Dollars (loose dollar bills put into the offering basket) are designated for our monthly Community Service Emphasis. If you want to contribute to the Sunday Dollars by mail, please do not send cash in the mail. You may add a dollar or two to your check and then note “Two dollars for Sunday Dollars.” Our counters will take it from there. Thank you!

A special word during special times . . .
Our offering is a key part of our worship experience as we offer “ourselves, our time and our possessions.” We ask that you remember your church during the duration of this virus threat. Expenses continue, and our faithful staff relies on what we have committed to them. Gifts may be received by mail, on our website, through your on-line banking, or electronically in other ways. We also encourage you to remember other non-profits that you regularly support. As in the past, at this unprecedented time your generosity means a great deal.   Thank you!
