Dear Foothills Servants and Friends,

This Sunday we welcome our fellow-Servant the Rev. John D. Kautz as he leads worship and preaches in Pastor Naomi's absence.

This is the sixth Sunday of Easter. We continue to celebrate the meaning of the resurrection by attending to biblical discourses, narratives, and poetry and by enacting our communal love in the greeting of peace and the sharing of bread and wine.

In our Gospel reading, as Jesus talks of returning to the Father, he promises to send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who will teach Jesus’ followers and remind them of all that Jesus taught. Jesus provides visions of peace that surpasses human understanding and power beyond human imagination.

—COMMUNITY SERVICE—

Remember to bring in clothing and new underwear for the women at The Haven, our Community Service Monthly Emphasis for May. Since 1970, The Haven has offered a unique approach to substance use recovery: recovery specifically for women. Their residential treatment center and outpatient clinic welcome clients—along with their children and families—with open arms. It’s their mission to reunite families, rebuild communities, and strengthen mother/child bonds through the process of healing from substance use and co-occurring disorders. During May, please donate new or gently used clothing; their greatest need right now is new underwear in all sizes for the women in their programs. Please place your clothing donations in the bin under the Community Service information table in the lobby. Make checks payable to "Lutheran Church of the Foothills" and mark your donation "The Haven;" you may place your monetary donation in the Sunday offering basket or mail it to the church. Sunday Dollars (loose dollar bills placed in the offering basket) are automatically designated for the month's Community Service Emphasis. Your donations, whether monetary or clothing, can make a huge difference in the lives of women who turn to The Haven for help. ~ Colette Barajas.

"Colors of the Heart" begins Friday, May 27! This is the theme of this year's Treasures for TIHAN, the annual fundraising event that supports Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network (TIHAN) to help people living with HIV/AIDS. From the comfort of your home, you can help celebrate TIHAN's 28 years of serving people living with HIV/AIDS in the Tucson community. This year’s event will have two parts: an online silent auction May 27 through June 6, and a live-streamed live auction at 5:30p June 4. Singer Billy Gilman will be entertaining with some of his award winning vocal numbers. Go to TIHAN.org to learn more about the event, levels of giving and sponsorships, and to RSVP. ~ Beth Daum.

Step Up to Justice, one of three recipients of the spring 2022 housing insecurity grants from our Hellene Henrikson Legacy Fund, writes: "Receiving the [$30,000] grant will allow us to provide much needed pro bono legal services in the community. Housing stability is an issue that we are passionate about. Your support will help us [deliver] outreach education to tenants across Pima County." See their complete thank you note and letter in the three-ring binder on the low table in the lobby. ~ Hellene Henrikson Fund Board.

Stephanie Spellers (Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Boston, Massachusetts) and her book Radical Welcome: Embracing God, The Other, and the Spirit of Transformation to look at our own practices of engagement at Lutheran Church of the Foothills. Sitting at round tables in small groups, we use discussion, short videos, and group activities to encourage participation from all ages, and to actively engage our senses in learning and growing together as community. ~ Pastor Naomi.

Pastor Naomi will be back in the office on Tuesday, May 24. We thank fellow-Servant Rev. John D. Kautz for leading worship and preaching on May 22 while Pastor Naomi is away. If you need emergency pastoral care before May 24, please call the church office at 520-299-5631 or call Rev. Kautz directly at 623-680-4673.

Discussion Eucharist is canceled for May 22 and May 29. On June 5 we will resume our 8:00a weekly worship service in the Learning Center.  This is an in-person-only option for worship; holy communion is offered; there is no music. Masks are worn at the group's discretion. All are welcome to join in this early morning in-person-only worship service. ~ Scott Warren.

An invitation for Pentecost Sunday, June 5: As we celebrate the global diversity of God’s people on Pentecost Sunday, we invite you to share your gift of language with us in worship at 10:30a. We are seeking volunteers to read or lead various parts of the service in languages other than spoken English. If you are interested in participating, sign up on the clipboard on the Activities Counter in the lobby. Choose from one of the eight components of the service in the accompanying file folder. On the clipboard, please print your name next to the part of the service you will read or lead, include the language you will use, and tell us how to best contact you by either email or phone. Remember to take the printed version of the component you select so you’ll have it to practice with.

Plan now for what to wear on Pentecost Sunday, June 5: As we rejoice in God’s global diversity, we invite you to dress in a way that is culturally significant and celebrates your identity. Cultural identity includes ethnic background, gender, sexuality, age, and ability. Alternatively, we invite you to wear something red to represent the tongues of flame that preceded the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.

Learn what our Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has to say about abortion. As with the thirteen other Social Statements adopted by the ELCA, the statement on abortion was developed from an extensive process of participation and deliberation, and was adopted by a two-thirds vote of 1991 ELCA churchwide assembly. While not binding, ELCA Social Statements set policy for the ELCA and its public work, and also help communities and individuals with moral formation, discernment and thoughtful engagement as they participate in God's work in the world. Pick up a full or summary "ELCA Social Statement on Abortion" from the table with the pink cloth in the lobby. You can also click on this link to read each of the thirteen social statements online: https://www.elca.org/Faith/Faith-and-Society/Social-Statements/Abortion.

Prayers for this week in the "Christ in Our Home" daily devotional booklet are written by a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Overland Park, Kansas. And you can read about prayer in the article "Nola's Knees" on page 8 of the "Living Lutheran" magazine for May. These denominational publications are provided by this congregation at no cost to you, and are available on the counter in the lobby (near the east entrance into the Sanctuary).

Peruse the Activities Counter in our lobby to learn of ways you can get to know your fellow-Servants better by joining in Servant opportunities, both within our congregation and out in the world. If you would enjoy serving within the congregation, consider these opportunities (contact the person named or Pastor Naomi for more information):

It is so good to see your face--all of your face. If you would like a name badge, sign up on clipboard that is on the kiosk in the lobby.

Sunday Dollars (loose dollar bills put into the offering basket) are designated for our monthly Community Service Emphasis. If you want to contribute to the Sunday Dollars by mail, please do not send cash in the mail. You may add a dollar or two to your check and then note “Two dollars for Sunday Dollars.” Our counters will take it from there. Thank you!

Our offering is a key part of our worship experience as we offer “ourselves, our time and our possessions.” Gifts may be received during worship, by mail, on our website, through your on-line banking, or electronically in other ways. We also encourage you to remember other non-profits that you regularly support. Your generosity means a great deal.   Thank you!
