Dear Foothills Servants and Friends --

The way to greatness in not what the disciples expect. It is not about being welcomed as great, but about welcoming event the least and littlest. How are we doing that?

Thanks to our musicians for this week's video -- Ralph Geror Jr, Kathleen Rogers, Andy Bade, and Ulrich Michael. They make our music extra special! Thanks also to Bryan Daum for his assistance behind the video/live streaming camera.

Breaking News!

Children in Worship
We will be happy to invite children into worship, as long as they are masked. We know masks are required in schools and they seem prudent in our community, too, for the protection of both the children, many of whom cannot yet be vaccinated, and the rest of our fellow servants. If you are bringing children with you to church, please be sure that their names, as well as yours, are recorded on our sign-in sheet (for purposes of contract tracing, should that become necessary).

New transitional pastor
This Sunday, September 19, we will welcome a new transitional pastor who we hope will be with us until our new called pastor arrives. Rev. Dr. John Leech is ordained in the Episcopal Church and has served as pastor in northern California and western Washington, as well as now in southern Arizona where, among other things, he is on call as a chaplain for Tucson Medical Center one night per week. He was baptized by his great-grandfather, Rev. Harvey M. Leech, who served as pastor of First Lutheran Church in Oakland, CA and St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Berkeley, CA. So, he is not a stranger to things Lutheran! As Bishop Hutterer has advised and approved, the provision of “full communion” reciprocity between the ELCA and the Episcopal Church makes it possible for those ordained in one church to serve in another. Please give Rev. Leech a warm welcome on Sunday!

Finally, the Council thanks Rev. Stewart McDonald for bringing Rev. Leech to our attention at a time when many of the local Lutheran pastors we might otherwise call on are committed elsewhere or managing health or family concerns.

To find out more about Rev. Leech, visit one of these sites:

We look forward to this next part of our journey with God and with each other.

LCF Office changes
Dakota Worden’s last day as our administrative assistant is October 15. Dakota will be working with our supply pastor and training a new office admin assistant before her last day. “I have felt so blessed to work for such a caring and kind congregation these past two years. I’ve enjoyed learning about your lives and building friendships with many of you. Thank you for your prayers for my family when I asked, and for welcoming me so kindly as your admin assistant. Who could have predicted all of the changes 2020 would bring! An updated website, live-streaming and online worship services, an email template refresh, and a revival of outreach through our Facebook group are a few of the changes we saw. I am confident that with the updates we’ve made in the past 2 years, your church will continue to reach others that need you. After my last day, I’ll be returning to my art career full-time as an artist and freelance graphic designer. Thank you for everything!”

—COMMUNITY SERVICE—
Our Community Service outreach for the month of September is Youth On Their Own (YOTO). YOTO serves the homeless youth of our community by supporting high school graduation and continued success of our local youth experiencing homelessness. We are focusing this month on their “Back to School Challenge,” where our financial donations will be matched by several generous donors! If you’d prefer to donate specific items, please visit their website at: www.yoto.org. Any monetary contributions can be either mailed or brought to the church office. Please note YOTO in the memo.

They are also sponsoring a sock drive, beginning mid-September through the end of October. More information to come. Thank you for your faithful support and continued response to the need in the greater Tucson community.

We are invited, along with many other local organizations, to participate in Youth On Their Own’s 4th annual “Socktober challenge”! The goal is to collect 3,500 pairs of NEW ladies or men’s socks from the greater Tucson community between September 15 and October 31st. We are all encouraged to donate various colors, patterns, sock types, including white athletic socks. As always, if you’d prefer to donate money, please write “Socktober Challenge” on your check memo line. I’ll be happy to go shopping! Thank you. ~ Sylvia Strauss-Kolb & Beth Daum, Community Service Team

INTERFAITH COMMUNITY SERVICES (ICS)
Non-perishable donation items needed:  Mac'n cheese; Peanut butter (14-16oz); Spaghetti, Spaghetti sauce; Chili; Ravioli; Canned meals; Canned meats, tuna, chicken; Soup; All kinds of canned foods (pull-tabs preferred on cans); Breakfast cereal; Jams and jellies. The bin for these non-perishables is on the west end of the Activities Counter. You may also give by writing a check to the church; please mark ICS on the memo line. Thank you for donating to ICS!

ICS IS PARTICIPATING IN THE 9/11 DAY OF SERVICE. ICS is turning this day of remembrance into a day of service by encouraging people to DONATE DIAPERS AND WIPES to the ICS Food Banks from 9/7 thru 9/20. Young families often struggle with the cost of diapers and wipes. Donations to the Diapers and Wipes Drive may be brought to the church and put on the counter, or in or near the food donations basket. They will be transferred to the ICS bin under the counter if necessary, as the diaper packages take up quite a bit of space. Donations during all of September will be delivered. Thank you for your help with this ICS special drive commemorating 9/11. ~ Sheryl Perry, Community Service Team

Thank you volunteers! The men at Primavera look forwards to our monthly meal delivery! -
October 15th is our date next month, and Primavera has started requesting servers to hand out the meals. Are you available or interested? Sign-up next month! More information to come. ~ Community Service Team.

The next Volunteer Orientation for Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network (TIHAN) is on Tuesday, September 28 from 5-7:30 p.m. It will be held on Zoom.  Call TIHAN at 299-6647 or go to TIHAN.org. to register for the 21/2 hour orientation. Ever wonder what it is like living with HIV/AIDS? You can hear the stories of people living with HIV/AIDS at the training, learn some facts about HIV/AIDS, hear how you can make a difference in the lives of these people that TIHAN serves. ~ Beth Daum

We have 10 volunteers for refugee resettlement. LSS has us on the list of people who can be contacted as things progress. As of last week, we understand that Tucson has not received any refugees. -- Even though things are unsettled right now, LSS has circulated a list of household items it will need to resettle people when they do arrive. The link to the list is below. You may click on an item and have it shipped to LSS or to your home so that you can deliver it to LSS at 3364 East Grant (between Country Club and Dodge). ~ Bryan Daum https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1AW5CJDHD72LC?ref_=wl_share

Our congregation has the opportunity to nominate one woman who is a voting member of our church to attend the ELCA Triennial Conference in Phoenix during the week of September 18, 2023. Registration and hotel accommodations will be provided. If any member has a woman they would like to nominate, please call or email Dakota with that person’s name. This will be a very spiritually fulfilling opportunity that will include international speakers, daily Bible studies and fellowship with people from all over the world.

Oral History Project  We had a wonderful decade-by-decade set of remembrances of LCF history that was part of the celebration of our 40th anniversary. Now, the Council would like to launch an oral history project both to capture the memories of fellow servants and to propose a way for those who don’t know each other well to become better acquainted. We solicit people who are willing to be interviewed—about your life in general, not just your participation at LCF. We also seek people who would be willing to serve as interviewers. If you are interested in either position, please contact Laura Hollengreen ([email protected]) or Dakota in the church office. We can provide assistance to you in filming or recording the interview.

A special word during special times . . .
Our offering is a key part of our worship experience as we offer “ourselves, our time and our possessions.” We ask that you remember your church during the duration of this virus threat. Expenses continue, and our faithful staff relies on what we have committed to them. Gifts may be received by mail, on our website, through your on-line banking, or electronically in other ways. We also encourage you to remember other non-profits that you regularly support. As in the past, at this unprecedented time your generosity means a great deal.   Thank you!
