National Night Out Recap

The City of La Cañada Flintridge hosted its first-ever National Night Out on Tuesday, July 16, bringing the community together for a night of fun and safety education. Held at Olberz Park, the event hosted hundreds of residents who participated in various activities designed to promote community engagement and public safety.

Throughout the evening, community members met their local first responders and got close up views of 21 different emergency vehicles. Representatives from various safety organizations including the Red Cross and Pasadena Humane Society were in attendance, as well as the City’s Neighborhood Watch Group Liaison Officer and CERT members.

We can't wait for next year! For more information on public safety efforts in La Cañada Flintridge, please visit CityOfLCF.org/Public-Safety.

Right-of-way and Turning Reminders

La Cañada Flintridge has implemented several improvements in the public right-of-way to enhance school drop-off and pick-up routes.

Notably, a second No Left Turn sign has been installed on La Cañada Boulevard southbound at Salisbury Road, aimed at improving traffic flow and safety through increased visibility. Additionally, the hours for the existing No Right Turn sign on Encinas Drive at Fernside Drive have been adjusted to 7:45 a.m. - 9:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. to align with those on La Cañada Blvd, ensuring consistent traffic patterns during peak school hours.

To further enhance pedestrian safety, a new crossing guard has been positioned at the intersection of Lasheart Drive and Salisbury Road to streamline traffic and provide a safer environment for students and parents.

When navigating the school pick-up and drop-off line, it’s crucial to remain alert, adhere to all posted traffic signs and signals and not make any illegal maneuvers or block driveways and crosswalks!

Bear Safety

Knowing what to do if you encounter a black bear can make all the difference. In a presentation focused on living in close proximity to black bears, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife provided these essential safety tips:

  1. Avoid cornering the animal
  2. Back away slowly and speak in a low voice
  3. Don't turn your back to the animal or run; give them room to escape
  4. If the bear approached you: stand your ground, make yourself look larger and yell
  5. Fight back if attacked; don't play dead

E-bike Safety

Let’s ride safe, LCF! With the rise in e-bike popularity, especially among minors, safety on our streets is more important than ever.

We want to remind parents, and all residents, of the importance of responsible riding:

  • Helmets are essential for everyone, but mandatory for those under 18. Riders of Class 3 E-Bikes must be at least 16 years old and must wear a helmet, regardless of age (Section 21213 CVC)
  • Riding against traffic is prohibited, and you must stop at red lights.
  • Remember - carrying passengers is illegal unless your bike has an extra permanent seat.
  • Make sure to dismount and walk your e-bike on sidewalks and crosswalks.

Want to ensure you and your family are up-to-date on e-bike safety? Enroll in a training course through CHP at bit.ly/3VWUguI.

Together, let’s play our part in keeping our streets safe!
