From the Pastor’s Desk:
“...be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:18b-20
It has been a joy to hear the choir singing again! And it has been wonderful to step back into my previous role of Music Director. I hadn’t realized how much I missed working with music and the choir in worship until now. I enjoy hearing the choir member’s voices in worship, but I also enjoy the camaraderie of Tuesday night choir practice. I’ve always enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of getting together as a small group and singing, learning new songs, laughing, hitting the right notes and some of the wrong ones.
Making music that praises God and makes us happy is a wonderful gift from God. The ability to use our voices to sing and make music along with instruments lifts our spirits and has been proven to be good for mental health as well. Church is a unique experience in today’s society where we get to gather as a large group and sing together. No where else do we do that. The love of God brings us together and gives us the opportunity to use music to praise, pray, and lament. Music can interpret Scripture for us in new ways. There are times that a song can communicate an emotion better than just words can do.
I’m so grateful that we can lift our voices and sing together every Sunday (and some of us on Tuesday nights too). I have noticed that you all in the congregation sing louder and even more beautifully with the choir leading. The sound lately has been fantastic to hear!
If you’ve ever been interested in joining a choir please come and sing with us! God is not looking for the next American Idol; God is looking for you, wrong notes or right notes. Music is mentioned so many times in Scripture and the entire book of Psalms were once all songs. Music is important to God. Perfection is not. Come and make a joyful noise! Amen!
grace and peace,
Pastor Jamie
