FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
They only share sometimes.

The teachers here, when they get a kind email from a parent or a message of gratitude from a former student, they only share them sometimes. They are humble like that.

I love it when they do, though, because such readings give me a tiny but very valuable insight into the work that goes on behind our classroom doors.

Just this morning, a teacher shared some feedback that had been provided by a guest speaker. The speaker is a college professor and was writing to congratulate the class on its energy and engagement during his recent visit. The class is grappling with a number of hard topics – race, justice, equity, privilege, etc. – and he was “blown away” by our students’ deep thinking and deep preparation for dialogue.

I love that we have classes that dive deep into tough subjects and that we have amazing teachers who can assist our students in developing skill sets to do hard things.

Way to go, Tiger Teachers – Second semester is in good hands!

Marybeth Smith
Principal

INFORMATION
Fall Registration: Just as second semester begins, we begin the process of registering for the 2019-2020 school year! On January 30 (11th), January 31 (10th), and February 1 (9th), students will go to the library and register for classes online in PowerSchool. These course selections are just in draft form and there will be time throughout the spring and summer for students to make adjustments. At Student-Led Conferences in February, we will provide a copy of the courses your student has selected and you will have another opportunity to make changes. As soon as the system allows, we'll also open up the courses to be viewed in PowerSchool so students can see how their schedule is being generated. Please know that we make changes up until the last minute before school begins, so periods and teachers will change many times as we balance classes and adjust the master schedule. Due to the complexity of the master schedule and the limitations of PowerSchool, we cannot promise specific teachers or periods. Please email Theresa if you have any questions: theresam@spokaneschools.org
Free Online SAT Practice: All 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students who took the PSAT in October can join in on the SAT Practice Kickoff Week, January 14-18. During this week, students can take the next step on their SAT practice journey by linking their College Board and Khan Academy accounts , which unlocks a free SAT study plan. Linking their accounts will send their PSAT scores to Khan Academy, giving them access to a personalized experience on Official SAT Practice . Research shows that studying on Official SAT Practice for 20 hours is associated with an average score gain of 115 points from the PSAT/NMSQT to the SAT. That's nearly double the average score gain of students who don't use Khan Academy.
Value of CTE Classes: CTE classes are very important and relevant for all students, whether they are going into the military, heading straight into the workforce, seeking a technical degree, or heading off to two- and four-year colleges. Please take time to watch this video that may give you more insight as to what is available to our students and where it can take them: https://youtu.be/yHcDUUnAsBY
Penny Drive: Did you know that approximately 450 children are born each year with a disability in Spokane County? Help has been there because of people like you who care enough to donate. For over 50 years, the Spokane Guilds’ School, a non-profit organization, has helped children, birth to age 3, with a variety of syndromes or developmental delays by providing physical, occupational, speech, and cognitive therapies. The Tiger Depot student store is having their Annual Penny Drive where we encourage all Tigers to participate in supporting the Spokane Guilds' School. Donations will be taken anytime from now to February 8. You can find "Kids for Kids" collection jugs at any of the offices, Tiger stores, and 2nd period classes. You can give your son/daughter a donation to turn in or even put a personal donation in Lisa Underhill's mailbox here at the school in the main office. Last year we were able to give over $2,500 and we would love to surpass that amount this year. Please help us support this great cause! (pictured: Hope Muriungi , Caroline Oechsle Jacobs , Emily Kramer, Melissa Harris , and Evelyn Allison ).
Royal Closet: Spokane's Royal Closet invites you to the Gowns Galore Fashion Show benefiting Daybreak Youth Services on Sunday, January 27 at 4:00pm at Centerplace Regional Event Center in the Spokane Valley. COLLEGE & CAREER
SchooLinks: We are transitioning to a new college application tracking system called SchooLinks. Students can access their account at www.lctigers.com - look for the link on the right.
FAFSA: October 1 marks an important day as it is when the 2018-19 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened. It is highly recommended that all LC Seniors file the FAFSA. It is the first step in getting financial aid -- including grants, scholarships, work study, and loans - from any college, technical school, or career training program. Go to to www.fafsa.gov for more information.

FSA ID: In order to file the FAFSA, both the parent and student must first create FSA IDs. We strongly encourage you to create your FSA ID now at fsaid.ed.gov because it takes approximately 1-3 days for the FSA ID to be verified and ready to be used. See the FAFSA FAQ document attached for more information. This is an important first step to apply for the FAFSA.

SAT Saturday Testing Information: The SAT will be hosted on Saturdays at LC this year. Students register for exams directly on the SAT website, www.sat.collegeboard.org. Most students take the SAT during their junior or senior year in high school. At least half of all students take the SAT twice - in the spring of their junior year and in the fall of their senior year. Most students also improve their score the second time around.

  • June 1 (deadline to register, May 3)

The SAT test costs $64.50 per test with the essay (47.50 without the essay). Late registration incurs an additional $29 fee. If you cannot afford to pay the fee, you can see your counselor to apply for a fee waiver before you register online (click here for fee waiver information: http://sat.collegeboard.org/register/sat-fee-waivers).

Morning Drop Off / After School Pickup: Before and after school, 4th Avenue in front of LC is a busy place with school buses and parents competing for limited space. In order to help alleviate congestion, we recommend that parents drop off and pick up students either on 5th Avenue, 3rd, Avenue or a block east or west of LC on 4th Avenue. It is important to not park (even for a drop off) in the bus zones. Thank you for your help!
Absences: If your student is going to be absent, please call our attendance hotline to excuse the absence at 354-6968. Please leave a message with your name, your student's name, clearly spelling out the last name, how long your student will be absent, and the reason for the absence. An unexcused absence will generate an automated phone call home.

If your child is going to have an extended absence, please have them go to the Student Office to pick up an Extended Absence Sheet to give teacher advanced notice of the absence.
Parent/Visitor Parking at LC: If you come to LC during the school day, we do not have visitor parking. You can park at any of the metered spots across the street. For after-hours events, you can park in any of the three parking lots under the freeway (across from the main LC building, across from the field house, and the far east lot) or on the street. If you ever get a parking ticket (in the 3 LC parking lots only) during an evening event, please let us know and we can take care of it for you. The lot to the west of LC (across from the grass quad) is not owned by LC, please do not park there.
