FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
These past few weeks have been challenging ones at LCHS as we face staff reductions precipitated by budgetary impacts in our district. We are grateful for the families and community members who have reached out to ask how they can support our teachers and students. Thank you for your many kind words and actions.

A bright spot amid these challenges is the voter-approved bond construction work that will move forward here on our campus. School construction funding comes from an entirely different and restricted source than operational funding, and that source of funding is not impacted in the same way as our operational dollars have been by recent legislative levy caps, etc. Thus, those bond-funded projects are able to move on as scheduled.

Next Monday, April 29 , expect to see fencing go up around our western lawn as Garco Construction begins its work on our classroom addition and cafeteria project, designed by NAC Architecture of Spokane. This project will add needed space for student learning and a safe gathering place on campus for our LC family.

This project is slated for completion by start-of-school 2020 and will be a very welcome addition to our campus. Students, families, and staff are asked to use caution around the construction area and to steer clear of the fencing if possible.

Should you have any questions about this project, please call and visit. Or come on by and look at the renderings for the project – they are pretty spectacular!

AP TESTING
AP Testing is Coming!: AP testing is May 6-17 ! We are very fortunate to partner again this year with WSU Spokane Riverpoint to use their site for our larger tests and the smaller tests will be held at LC (tests in yellow in the chart below will be at LC). Students taking a morning test will need arrive at their site by 7:30am and afternoon test takers will need to arrive by 11:30am . Please help to ensure students arrive with a picture ID (LC ID or state ID), pencils, pen, calculator (for math/science tests), and snacks/water. Please do not bring backpacks ! Also, as guests of WSU, we ask that students respect the campus environment by being as quiet as possible while in the buildings.

This is a national test schedule established by the College Board. We do not have any flexibility to move the test dates, so it is very important that if your student has registered for the test, he/she attends. If there is a medical emergency or other reason that prevents your student from attending, please email Theresa Meyer ASAP and we will put in a request to the College Board for late test permission. There is a limited late testing period later in May, but there are strict rules regarding permission to take late tests.

We will excuse test takers in PowerSchool, so there is no need for you to call in an absence. Morning test takers are excused 1st-4th period and afternoon students are excused 3rd-6th period.

The official schedule with testing locations and parking information at WSU Riverpoint will be posted on www.lctigers.com by early next week and students will receive the schedule and map in their AP classes. For AP Human Geography and AP European History, LC will be providing a school bus to take students to and from WSU.

Good luck on your tests Tigers! You've worked hard all year to prepare and we know you're going to be successful!

Parent Volunteers Needed for Senior Signing Day: Signing Celebrations across the nation recognize students who have achieved the life-changing milestone of committing to post-secondary options. Signing Celebration events help motivate students to take charge of their future by completing their education beyond high school. National College Signing Days have traditionally been focused on the college draft of promising athletes. Communities gather to watch, commentators speculate where athletes will play and fans prepare to cheer their new team members. NOW, across the nation, and at LCHS, we want to celebrate all seniors as they officially enlist in a military branch or commit to a college or university to obtain a post-secondary degree or certificate.

Figuring out educational plans beyond high school is exciting and it is a major step towards a student's future and we believe that it should be celebrated! On May 1 , The National College Admission Confirmation Deadline, LCHS will be honoring seniors during their social studies class period with post-secondary celebrations and exit interviews.

If any parent would like to volunteer with the LC Signing Event (primarily assisting with exit interviews) please contact Jeff Norton ( jeffn@spokaneschools.org ) or Suzanne Maguire ( suzannem@spokaneschools.org ) for details.

LC Tiger Drama Presents: XANADU ( April 26-27 at 7:00pm ) and HAMLET ( May 2-3 at 7:00pm ). General Seating - Adults: $10.00 and Students: $8.00.
Based on the (in)famous 1980 Olivia Newton-John film, XANADU follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mount Olympus to Venice Beach, California. in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first ROLLER DISCO! (Hey, it's 1980!) But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos abounds.

When his suspiciously widowed mother swiftly marries his uncle, amidst demands for revenge from his murdered father’s ghost, the young prince HAMLET resolves that something is indeed “rotten in the state of Denmark.” Forced by circumstance into a world turned upside down by betrayal, distrust and madness, Hamlet spirals through a torrent of erratic emotion and bizarre behavior in a relentless pursuit of truth. Torn between duty and doubt, he wrestles tenaciously with the profound question “to be or not to be,” until fate exacts its final answer.

XANADU and HAMLET are both directed/choreographed by Greg Pschirrer with musical direction by Heidi Santiago and costumes by Lisa Caryl-Vukas and Pauletta Caryl . XANADU student choreographers Paige Galey , Quincy McFaul , and Paige Stoick bring a roller-skating ensemble to life led by Gunnar Rorholm (Sonny) and Amia Delaney (Clio/Kira). HAMLET is stage managed by Alyssa Lizardo with a cast that includes three Hamlets: Eli Svoboda , Rae Baer , and Josie Stenzel with Brendan Burns (Claudius), Genevieve Schmidt (Gertrude), Maya Eastlund (Ophelia), Paul Erban (Larates), Caleb Bopp (Polonius), and Sophia Dompier (Horatio).

COLLEGE & CAREER
SchooLinks: Seniors, when you are applying to colleges, be sure to log into our college application tracking system called SchooLinks. Students can access their account at www.lctigers.com - look for the link on the right.
Scholarship: The LC Tiger Fund Scholarship was started by the Class of 1966 in 2006 in order to recognize an LC senior who has overcome personal and/or life difficulties and has made a commitment to furthering his/her education after graduation from Lewis & Clark High School. We know that there are many students who have potential for college success but often get over looked for scholarship assistance because their G.P.A. did not exceed a 3.5 minimum required for scholarship consideration. We also know that character and desire to improve play a large part in future success in school and life. Click here to learn more and download the application. Deadline to apply is April 30 .
SAT Saturday Testing Information: The SAT will be hosted on Saturdays at LC this year. Students register for exams directly on the SAT website, www.sat.collegeboard.org . Most students take the SAT during their junior or senior year in high school. At least half of all students take the SAT twice - in the spring of their junior year and in the fall of their senior year. Most students also improve their score the second time around.
  • May 4 (deadline to register, April 5)
  • June 1 (deadline to register, May 3)

The SAT test costs $64.50 per test with the essay (47.50 without the essay). Late registration incurs an additional $29 fee. If you cannot afford to pay the fee, you can see your counselor to apply for a fee waiver before you register online (click here for fee waiver information: http://sat.collegeboard.org/register/sat-fee-waivers ).
Free Online SAT Practice: All 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students who took the PSAT in October can take the next step on their SAT practice journey by linking their College Board and Khan Academy accounts , which unlocks a free SAT study plan. Linking their accounts will send their PSAT scores to Khan Academy, giving them access to a personalized experience on Official SAT Practice . Research shows that studying on Official SAT Practice for 20 hours is associated with an average score gain of 115 points from the PSAT/NMSQT to the SAT. That's nearly double the average score gain of students who don't use Khan Academy.
ACT Testing: ACT college admissions test will be offered on Saturdays at FERRIS or EAST VALLEY High School. For information on test registration, visit: www.act.org . Be to Ferris by 7:45am, bring a printed copy of your test ticket, photo ID, pencils, and calculator. The test will end at 12:15pm (or 1:00pm if you are taking the ACT Plus Writing). The ACT costs $62.50 with the writing test ($46 without). The ACT will be offered: June 8.
