FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
I have a student in the cafeteria who pretty much every day during lunch shouts, “It’s my birthday!”

It’s not.

It never is.

I checked, his birthday is in the fall.

He does it because it’s his way of creating just a little chaos, a little silliness, a little shake-up of the routine.

Everyone gets it now; it’s his thing.

Many students go along with the gag and wish him a happy birthday or applaud briefly in response, and, frankly, everyone looks forward to it.

“When will it come?” “Will today be the day he doesn’t do it?” “Maybe today he’ll do it more than once – on Tuesday he did it three times!”

It’s a tiny thing. This little way of lodging a protest against the six-foot social distancing requirements that make it difficult for kids to connect and get acquainted, but which have enabled us to keep our schools open and our kids here at school. (We love the policies, and we simultaneously want them to go away very, very badly.)

I love this one young man’s method of pushing the boundaries more than a little.

I love that kids are finding ways to be goofy and absurd and ridiculous and connected.

It feels healthy and good and not just a little overdue.

One of these days I’m going to bring in birthday treats for that particular lunch cohort.

A little chaos can work both ways…

Good News: The U.S. State Department has selected LC Sophomore, Nyah Ankcorn, for its National Security Language Initiative for Youth program this summer. Nyah will study Arabic through a partnership with Morocco. Learn more about this program here. Congratulations Nyah!
Good News: LC Gymnastics placed 1st last week for Senior Night in their GSL Meet against last year’s GSL champs - Mt. Spokane! Four of the top 5 All Around Athletes were Tigers -

Good News: LC Junior Zoe North has qualified for the PSAT/NMSQT scholarship competition. She is one of 50,000 students nationwide to move forward to the next round. Congratulations Zoe!
Good News: LC Senior Tyler Rundgren has been accepted and will attend the University of Oregon. Go Ducks!
Good News: LC Tiger Drama celebrated our talented thespians Thursday night with the annual Closing Night showcase. As soon as the show is edited, we'll share the link for you to enjoy the performances. Until then, here is the Senior video looking back over the last 4 years (thank you Mr. Richard Maguire!). At the end of the show, Mr. Pschirrer and Mrs. Maguire revealed the 2021-2022 "Part of your World Season - join us next year and audition to be in the shows!
Good News: LC Junior Claire Worthy has made the Surf Select National Team in Soccer. Claire was invited by her club coach and evaluated against players from all over the country. Congratulations Claire!

Graduation: Senior Families, in case you have not heard, Lewis and Clark’s Graduation will be June 13 at 12:00pm at the Riverfront Park Pavilion. We are only able to offer two tickets to each student to attend the actual ceremony inside the Pavilion, but we have set up a lottery for extra tickets. If you are requesting extra tickets, please have your senior check with Julie Harris-Croteau in the Student Office to enter our lottery.
 
Great News! For those unable to attend inside the Pavilion, a large screen will be set up in the Clock Tower Meadow right outside the Pavilion live-streaming the ceremony! Get your blankets and lawn chairs ready to celebrate your senior. 
 
More Great News! One more celebratory event: A “Senior Send Off Party” will be held at Lewis and Clark after graduation from 8:00pm-12:00am. See below for more information on this great event!

Graduation Reminders:
  1. Caps, gowns & tassels are required to wear at Graduation. If you are unable to purchase them please check with Ms. Croteau in the Student Office as we have a few that we can loan out. If you ordered them from Jostens, they will be here the first week of June to deliver them to you. If you have questions or want to order these items, or Graduation announcements, please call Jostens at 509-468-1608. 
  2. When Jostens is here in June to deliver your caps & gowns, you will also receive a Graduation packet with color coded wristbands for entrance into Graduation. If you are receiving any honor cords, stoles or medals to wear at Graduation, they will be in your packet as well.
  3. Seniors, please check in the Business Office to make sure your fees & fines are paid.  The last day to pay them is June 10. If they are left unpaid, you will not receive your diploma.
  4. Senior Send Off Party tickets and scholarships are available in the Business Office and online beginning May 3. Tickets are $25.
  5. Extra tickets/wristbands lottery entries can be requested in the Student Office with Julie Croteau. 

Ticket Information from SPS: We’re excited to honor the SPS Class of 2021 in person at the Riverfront Park Pavilion. Due to COVID considerations, seating will be limited. Each graduate will receive two general seating wristbands for guests to attend the ceremony.

Washington State Department of Health (DOH) event guidelines require all guests in the general seating area to sit in pairs at marked locations to ensure 6-foot distancing from other guests. The Governor’s office and DOH are allowing for a fully vaccinated seating area as well. Graduates with family members who are fully vaccinated may exchange their two general seating area wristbands for up to four wristbands for the fully vaccinated seating area. 
  • Graduates can exchange their general seating passes on June 8, 9, and 10 in the Student Office.
  • Under DOH guidelines, guests wishing to exchange general seating area wristbands for fully vaccinated seating area wristbands are required to present proof of a second dose of the Pfizer/Moderna vaccine or single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine dated at least two weeks prior to the graduation ceremony - May 29 for June 12 graduations, and May 30 for June 13 graduations. The DOH Vaccine Locator lists Spokane County providers and pharmacies offering COVID-19 vaccination.
  • Due to capacity issues, graduates may not have guests in both seating areas.
  • Social distancing will not be required in the fully vaccinated seating area.

All graduates and guests must have a wristband to enter the Pavilion, but additional family and friends can still come celebrate! Video screens (with audio) will be set up in the Clock Tower Meadow to project each graduation ceremony for guests who do not have wristbands.

Graduation Information:
  1. Graduation - Ceremony - June 13 - 12:00pm - The Graduation Ceremony is at Riverfront Park in the Pavilion this year. The Ceremony starts at 12 noon.
  2. Graduation Seating - Seating for family opens at 11:30am - Family members will not be allowed into the Pavilion seating area until 11:30. They must be wearing the orange wristbands that are given to you in your Graduation packet.
  3. Other info about the Pavilion - We encourage you to bring short lawn chairs (beach chairs) or blankets to sit on.There is limited ADA seating inside the Pavilion. All bags will be checked by Security. No balloons are allowed inside the Pavilion. 
  4. Live streaming on a big screen at the park and on TV - The ceremony will be live streamed on www.SpokaneSchools.org by KSPS. There will be an additional big screen TV on the grassy area by the Clock Tower for extra family members or guests to watch the ceremony.
  5. Pictures by Dorians at Graduation - Dorians will be on site taking pictures of every graduation on the stage and off the stage. There will not be any paper packets to order pictures this year. To purchase pictures please go to this website: https://ios.mydorian.com/ordering/with?key=GYZSB8VH
  6. Parking at LC - You are welcome to park under the freeway at LC if needed. However, there will not be any transportation provided from LC to the Pavilion.
  7. Senior Send Off - June 13 8:00pm-12:00am (doors open at 7:30pm) - This replaces the Senior All-Nighter. 8pm-12pm at LC. Doors open at 7:30pm. Pre-purchase tickets for $25 at the Business Office. Check in the Business Office for Scholarships to this event.
Lewis and Clark Senior Send Off 2021: Seniors are invited to attend on June 13, a Sunday, 8:00pm-12:00am in the LC Field House.

We'll have food, games, a magician, a hypnotist! Tickets are $25 and you can buy online at www.lctigers.com - click on the "pay fees" icon or buy your ticket at the LC business office.

Summer Reading/Math Assignments: A few of our English and Math classes require summer assignments. If you are registered for the following classes, here is your assignment (if your class is not listed, it does NOT have a required summer assignment):

End of the Year Laptop Check-In: At the end of the school year, we will be collecting ALL student laptops in order to update them for next year. We will provide more information soon about the laptop and textbook return process.

For now, if your SPS provided laptop has any damage, we are asking that you bring it in and we will replace it with a new one so that our tech department can get a head start on fixing computers for next year. The tech department will assess the damage and contact you if there are issues resulting in a fee. You can see Mrs. Rasmussen in the front hall office (in front of the auditorium) to swap out your laptop and she can give you more information on the process.

SVL Summer and Fall Registration Is Open: If you are planning to take an SVL class for Summer or Fall 2021, you will need to complete their fully digital registration process:
  1. Determine which course(s) you would like to take. Check out our Course Catalog for a full list of courses with descriptions.
  2. Visit the SVL registration site and select "2021-22 Semester 1".
  3. Complete all portions of the online registration form. Once your form is submitted, you will receive an email from Spokane Virtual with a link to view your registration form - this link is active for 30 days. *Make sure all information on your form is correct. If corrections are needed, you can correct the form or create a new registration form.
  4. Follow all directions within the registration email.  Your email reply serves as your digital signature in agreement to Spokane Virtual's policies and expectations.
  5. Your school counselor will be notified of your registration by the SVL office.

Summer SVL offers: High school credit courses and summer courses to recover learning loss and prepare for next school year including, K-8 Math and Literacy Strategies, Math and World Language Bridge courses, and SAT/PSAT Prep.  

After the Spokane Virtual office receives your approval email, watch for a confirmation email from SVL. The confirmation email is your notification that Spokane Virtual is reserving a spot for you in the requested course(s) for the upcoming semester. If you have any questions, please contact the SVL office at 354-7545 or [email protected]. All students will be entered into courses based on the order that SVL receives their completed registration paperwork.
COLLEGE & CAREER
FAFSA: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now OPEN! It is highly recommended that all LC Seniors file the FAFSA. It is the first step in getting financial aid -- including grants, scholarships, work study, and loans - from any college, technical school, or career training program. Go to to www.fafsa.gov. In order to file the FAFSA, both the parent and student must first create FSA IDs. Learn more about FAFSA by reading 101: FAFSA. Do you need help with filing out your FAFSA? Donations Needed: Feminine Hygiene Products Needed - LC is working to make products consistently accessible at school, and we could use your help! We would greatly appreciate donations of unopened packages of tampons (any size), pads, and panty liners. Donations may be dropped off with the school nurse in the public office.
LC Booster Club: The Lewis and Clark Booster Club has established an on-line store at https://lcboosterclub.square.site/. This is a great place to do some holiday shopping. We will ship the merchandise to your home or you can come to LC and pick up your items at the book room. Enjoy doing some holiday shopping and support our students at LC. Go Tigers.
FamilyID Athletic Clearance/Registration: FamilyID is a secure registration platform that provides an easy, user-friendly way to register for activities, while helping us to be more administratively efficient and environmentally responsible. When you register, the system keeps track of your information, so you only have to enter it once for multiple uses, family members and programs. If you do not have Internet access, you can use a computer at LC. The first time you register, it is recommended that you use a computer. After that, registrations can easily be done on your phone. If needed, paper packets are still available in the Business Office. Register at:

Bite2Go Program: Lewis and Clark High School aspires to bring meal security to eliminate the nutritional gap of students. We intend to fulfill this goal with the Bite2Go program, which is a program run by LC DECA members meant to help get food to students for the weekend. Students can sign up here.

Absences: If your student is going to be absent, please call our attendance hotline to excuse the absence at 354-6968. Please leave a message with your name, your student's name, clearly spelling out the last name, how long your student will be absent, and the reason for the absence. An unexcused absence will generate an automated phone call home. If your child is going to have an extended absence, please have them go to the Student Office to pick up an Extended Absence Sheet to give teacher advanced notice of the absence.
Donate to the Student Assistance Fund: When you come in to pay student fees in the Business Office, please consider donating to the Student Assistance fund. This fund helps needy students pay for the required class fees and athletic fees. Every dollar donated goes directly to LC students.
