FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
Wow.

Week One in the books!

We will monitor and adjust our protocols quite a bit in the days ahead to ensure that students are safe and supported and able to make and enjoy the social connections so vital to high school life while here.

That is a tall order with social distancing, masks, rapid-fire transitions in our passing periods, and lunch seating that is admittedly less than convivial. (We are advising that students will be able to self-select cafeteria seats next week – stay tuned – this will definitely make lunch time less, umm… awkward?)

But we know that most of our students are very glad to be back to some sort of a normal routine and to a sense that they are a part of a community once again.

I was checking kids into the building yesterday morning, and a young lady I had not yet met (freshman) stopped and looked at me.

“Hi, Principal Smith. You don’t know me yet, but I know you from the videos. I just want you to know how happy I am to be in school!”

And then she scampered away to class.

Teachers have reported that there are students who are sharing that being around a large number of people has come to feel unnatural and even a little alarming, but that they are excited to actually be in a classroom again and see actual human classmates once more.

School sports are well underway.

The federal government is advising schools to gear up for some form of assessments this spring.

I got my first phone call from a parent concerned about the parking situation for late arrival students.

We aren’t getting heat up to rooms 331 or 333.

A gentlemen living in the apartments across the street called to say that our intercom announcements are so loud that he can hear them in his dining room.

It’s definitely feeling like things are returning to at least a semblance of normal.

I’ll absolutely take it. Long way to go, I know. But I’ll take it for now.

AP Testing Schedule: AP Exams will be administered May 18-28. This year due to COVID, College Board has added flexibility in the exam calendar and Spokane Public Schools has opted to have most exams taken at home on a computer. College Board does require some exams to be administered in-person due to special technology requirements and the difficulty of some exams (math and science) working in a digital format. The exams in blue will be taken at home on a computer and the exams in yellow will be proctored at LC (all rooms will follow district social distance and safety guidelines).

We will have more information soon on the details of testing, but for now, here are actions you can take to ensure that you are ready and signed up for the correct exam:

  • College Board Account: Because most tests are online, you will need to be able to easily access your College Board account. Go to: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/ to make sure you can get in. If you do not remember your CB login/password, you will need to contact them directly as we do not have access to that information. Be sure to write down your username/password as you will need it for testing.

  • Payment: If you have an outstanding balance on your AP Exams, please pay ASAP through the Business Office or the online payment portal on www.lctigers.com - we will need all exams paid for before the testing window begins. Contact our Business Office if you need assistance in the process (354-6880).

  • Canceling and Exam: please go to your College Board account to verify which tests you are taking. If you need to cancel an exam, email Theresa Meyer ASAP to begin the process of canceling and processing a refund. There is NO fee for cancellation and you will receive a 100% refund if you have already paid.

  • Adding an Exam: If you meant to sign up for an exam, but it isn't on the CB web site, email Theresa Meyer ASAP to get registered and to set up payment (there is a mandatory $40 late fee from the College Board that cannot be waived).
PLEASE GO ONLINE TO YOUR POWERSCHOOL TODAY AND ENTER YOUR COURSE REQUESTS!

Registration for Fall 2021: We are at 82.9% of all LC students for next year registered in PowerSchool! (grade level breakdown: 11th - 85.8%, 10th - 87.8%, 9th - 87.1%, 8th - 68.9%).

PowerSchool: In order to prepare for registration, it will be important for you know your login and password to PowerSchool and you can get into the program (the login/password is different from your Clever/MS365 login/password).
  • Directions: Using a computer (not your phone), go to PowerSchool and try log in (do not try the links to reset it yourself, they do not work and be sure to use the link above and not access through Clever or using a Google search for PowerSchool which may take you to a different district's servers).
  • If you can't get in, your password will need to be reset. Click on the link below to send an email to Mrs. Meyer. Provide your name and simply ask for a password reset.

Choice Transfer Requests: If you are looking to choice transfer to a different SPS school, the Choice Transfer Applications will open February 8 - March 8. To apply, go here and click on Apply.

Registration Resources: We are posting information on the www.lctigers.com and in the Lewis and Clark HS TEAM to share information. Students can view registration forms for their next grade level and documents from elective teachers that share the highlights of their classes. Students will use the registration forms for planning purposes but will not be submitting hard copies this year. They will enter all of their registration requests into PowerSchool in February. You can access the information and forms below for your planning:
Register to Ride the School Bus: Secondary students must register to ride the bus. This can be completed on the district website at spokaneschools.org/busregistration.

Secondary SpED students are already being rerouted for a March 1 match of the new secondary bell times. Families will be notified of the reroute info.
Please also let the transportation team know if you have students who may have special circumstances or may be in need of specialized transportation due to their educational schedule.
The LC Learning Center: The LC Learning Center (LCLC) new time will be from 2:15-4:30, Monday-Thursday. The students can come only on the day they are assigned to be at school. There will be an Activity bus to take students home if needed. We will have teachers available every afternoon to help students with homework questions.
Tiger Closet Volunteers: Volunteers are needed to help organize the LC Tiger Closet so we are ready for school to re-open. We need people to help sort and fold clothes. We are also in need of donations of hoodies - Large, XL, and XXL! If you can help, please contact Kris Crocker at: [email protected]

The Tiger Closet allows any LC student the opportunity to "shop" for a variety of clothes - all free of charge!!! Please help us continue this great tradition.
COLLEGE & CAREER
FAFSA: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now OPEN! It is highly recommended that all LC Seniors file the FAFSA. It is the first step in getting financial aid -- including grants, scholarships, work study, and loans - from any college, technical school, or career training program. Go to to www.fafsa.gov. In order to file the FAFSA, both the parent and student must first create FSA IDs. Learn more about FAFSA by reading 101: FAFSA. Do you need help with filing out your FAFSA? We have a great video resource for you from the Washington Student Achievement Council - FAFSA Line by Line - this video will point out common mistakes, tell you the information you will need to complete the FAFSA, and walk you through every single line in the application. You can also reach out to Mr. Norton for help on FAFSA, college apps, and scholarships!
Senior Remind Group: Seniors are encouraged to join the Senior Remind Text Group to receive updates through out the year on college deadlines, scholarships, college visits, the high school & beyond plan, and more. To receive messages via text, send a new text to the number: 81010 and in the message, enter this as the message: @lchsccr-21
SAT School Day for Juniors Update: In consultation with the Spokane Regional Health Department’s guidance and each high school principal, it was decided to cancel the district’s SAT School Day administration this school year.

In prior school years the SAT School Day has been a valuable opportunity to support all students having as many post-secondary options as possible. This school year there has been some understandable shifts from colleges and the following are important points to consider:

Students who still wish to take an SAT Saturday test should reach out to their counselor or Mr. Norton for more information on using waivers or getting financial support to cover the cost of an SAT test.
