FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

In this week’s installment of The Vape Escape, I’ve linked a website from the Centers for Disease Control and the office of the Surgeon General. It’s a student-friendly site loaded with information about the health and social impacts of vaping. There are articles, public-service campaign examples, etc., and all of them are very clever and current. I’d suggest that you visit the site and see what it has to offer, and then visit with your Tiger so that you can engage in a conversation about the impacts of vaping.

And I definitely think it’s a good idea to engage your Tiger in some speculation about the “Why?’ of vaping.

Why might teenagers be drawn to e-cigarettes in the numbers that they are?

We know that more and more kids are using vape technology every day, and we have some ideas as to the why. But every student is different and it would be illuminating to learn what your Tiger thinks.

This might be a great opportunity to visit about social norms, pressures, anxiety management, or any of the other factors that your Tiger might be observing or experiencing. Remember, we are eager to partner with you to provide a great, healthy environment for your student’s growth, so feel free to contact us for any ideas or supports.

INFORMATION
Fall 2019 Schedules: Our draft Fall 2019 schedules are now available on PowerSchool for students to view! These schedules are in very early draft form and we have 95.1% of students fully scheduled. The next step is to ensure that all students have the correct and desired classes by logging into PowerSchool to check that the right classes are assigned and that nothing has been missed (click on Next Year’s Schedule, then look at the Matrix view - works best on a computer, the app doesn't always show next year's classes).
  • If you have a hole in your schedule, that means you are one of the 4.9% that have scheduling issues. We will be working to move classes around to fix as many issues as possible. If we cannot find a solution, we will be calling you to the office to make a schedule change.
  • If you signed up to be an Intern (Seniors only), we haven't assigned specific periods to that class yet. Over the next few weeks, you'll see it move from INT period into periods 1-6.
  • If you don’t know how to get into PowerSchool, email [email protected] or visit the Student Office for help.
  • If there is an error or a change is requested, go to the Student Office and fill out a blue sheet. You can see the changes reflected in PowerSchool once they are made. If a change cannot be made due to period conflicts or full classes, we will let you know.
  • Your classes are confirmed, but the periods and teachers WILL change many times over the next few months. Sorry, but we cannot promise specific teachers or periods due to the fluidity of the schedule and very full classes.
  • If you are planning on taking SVL, please go online to register soon to ensure a spot at www.spokanevirtual.com. For now, SVL is listed on schedules as “pending”, in August, the real SVL courses will be merged into PowerSchool.
  • If you are planning on enrolling in Running Start at the college, once you have a confirmed schedule, it is important to let us know to drop the LC classes.
Yearbook Distribution: Yearbooks will be distributed Tuesday, June 4 in the Wrestling Room before school, lunch, and after school. Yearbooks will be available for purchase beginning that morning at 7:30am in the Business Office for $60.
Lost and Found: The LC Lost and Found is overflowing! If you are missing anything, please come check the Lost and Found in the Bookroom before or after school, or during lunch. All lost and found items that are not claimed will be donated on June 13. Thank you!
Parent Input Opportunity: The League of Education Voters (LEV) is conducting a focus group to gather information on parents' perspective of the support their children received in high school to become college and career ready.

To be eligible to participate we are looking for parents of students of color who graduated from high school in 2018 or are graduating in 2019 and were taking dual credit classes (Career Technical Education CTE, AP course, Running star, or International Baccalaureate IB). The information gathered will be used to create and complete advocacy campaigns to increase the participation of underrepresented student groups in dual credit and CTE courses. Parents opinion on this topic will also help LEV and partners learn more about how underrepresented students and families in public high schools make decisions to participate in dual credit courses. Please join us on Wednesday, June 19 from 6:30-7:30 pm at the Spokane Public Library, 906 W Main St Spokane 99203, Downtown boardroom 3rd floor. Parking on 908 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.

The group will consist of about 12 Parents, a moderator, and an assistant. We will provide drinks, coffee, snack, and  a $50 gift certificate  to reward participation. To sign up using this google form:   https://forms.gle/bngb8gLtkGWoEY416 or call 509-979-0421 or email:  [email protected]
Parent Input Needed: As a school community we are committed to listening to feedback and looking for ways to improve the educational experience for you and your student. Please take the time to complete a short survey to let us know how we are doing as a school. Thank you in advance for your thoughts. Please click here: https://surveys.panoramaed.com/spokane/lewisandclark/surveys
