FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
We are sincerely close to year’s end.

The seniors have skipped. (Struck me as odd in a year when they are already missing 50% of in-school time, but tradition beckoned and they did go…)

Books and computers are starting to wend their way back into storage closets and shelves.

The basketball season is drawing to an end. (Yes. Basketball. We did spring sports in the winter and are doing winter sports now in the spring and who’s on first anyway?)

It is as busy a spring as I can remember with new-venue graduation planning, safety and wellness planning for a new school year going full throttle, and so much transition of leadership and leaders all across the school district.
It’s times like these that I go back to my favorite authorial quote of all time.

It’s brief. Pithy. And, for someone who spent the formative years of her childhood watching an older brother bat cleanup for baseball teams at both North Central High School and then Whitman College, an apt analogy for oh-so-many instances.

Grace Bats Last.

It originated from writer Anne Lamott.

She uses it to remind readers that the real power in any competition or challenge is the final offering of grace.
Grace is a power-hitter and can be counted on to finish the job that others have started.

Grace comes up to bat when teammates have run out of steam and makes sure that those the other players get home safely.

And once grace gets up and gets up to bat, well, it’s all over but the shouting.

This year, grace has been working all along, in every interaction between teacher and student, parent and child, parent and teacher.

It’s been insane to watch how deeply teachers have dug into their reserves of grace and compassion and empathy and understanding in order to serve students and families well.

It’s been inspiring to work with families who are so much wanting to take care of teachers and students through food drives, luncheons, coffee cards, clothing donations, even monetary support.

And the kids? They have crushed it day after day just hanging on in a world turned completely on its ear.
We will continue to lead with grace and to make sure we end with it as well.

Thank you for offering it to us each and every day.

Marybeth Smith
Lewis and Clark HS Principal

Ticket Information from SPS: We’re excited to honor the SPS Class of 2021 in person at the Riverfront Park Pavilion. Due to COVID considerations, seating will be limited. Each graduate will receive a gold wristband for themselves and two general seating wristbands for guests to attend the ceremony. The wristbands MUST be worn to attend graduation.

Washington State Department of Health (DOH) event guidelines require all guests in the general seating area to sit in pairs at marked locations to ensure 6-foot distancing from other guests. The Governor’s office and DOH are allowing for a fully vaccinated seating area as well. Graduates with family members who are fully vaccinated may exchange their two general seating area wristbands for up to four wristbands for the fully vaccinated seating area.
  • Graduates can exchange their general seating passes on June 8, 9, and 10 in the Student Office between 1:00-3:30pm.
  • Under DOH guidelines, guests wishing to exchange general seating area wristbands for fully vaccinated seating area wristbands are required to present proof of a second dose of the Pfizer/Moderna vaccine or single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine dated at least two weeks prior to the graduation ceremony - May 29 for June 12 graduations, and May 30 for June 13 graduations. The DOH Vaccine Locator lists Spokane County providers and pharmacies offering COVID-19 vaccination.
  • Due to capacity issues, graduates may not have guests in both seating areas.
  • Social distancing will not be required in the fully vaccinated seating area.

All graduates and guests must have a wristband to enter the Pavilion, but additional family and friends can still come celebrate! Video screens (with audio) will be set up in the Clock Tower Meadow to project each graduation ceremony for guests who do not have wristbands.

FAFSA: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now OPEN! It is highly recommended that all LC Seniors file the FAFSA. It is the first step in getting financial aid -- including grants, scholarships, work study, and loans - from any college, technical school, or career training program. Go to to www.fafsa.gov. In order to file the FAFSA, both the parent and student must first create FSA IDs. Learn more about FAFSA by reading 101: FAFSA. Do you need help with filing out your FAFSA? We have a great video resource for you from the Washington Student Achievement Council - FAFSA Line by Line - this video will point out common mistakes, tell you the information you will need to complete the FAFSA, and walk you through every single line in the application. You can also reach out to Mr. Norton for help on FAFSA, college apps, and scholarships!
