FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
Yesterday I ran into one of my best-beloved kids here at school.

She is a fighter. Scrappy. Fierce.

But she is also the kid who will come into my office to let me know that I’ve got “a situation” upstairs by the girls bathroom, the kid who will come tell us that one of her friends got kicked out last night and needs lunch money, the kid who sits in the office doing homework at lunchtime because the night before she was up all night with a baby brother who is teething and mom was at work.

I LOVE this kid.

She was here getting organized on a ton of work she needs to do before the end of the semester.
She’s gotten behind because Covid.

She was meeting with Mrs. Steele to help prioritize and focus on which assignments were must-dos, which were should-dos, which were could dos, and which were don’ts.

I think of her when I think of the conversations we are having this week related to grading.

Last spring, the OSPI sent out a good deal of grading direction, but this fall, with districts in a variety of different models ranging from full-time in person to full-time remote, the state has given far less direction.

Autonomy is a good thing, but so is really clear guidance in a time that is wonky as heck.

We have banded together across the school district to help staff think through how to ensure that students are afforded both grace and support and clarity in terms of grading.

But it’s hard.

When kids go dark and teachers have no input from them, what is the right and moral response in terms of grading?

When kids’ computers are logged in to meetings, but they don’t take part in any class activities, are they really there?

We are emphasizing that in this weird Covid world, we all need to assume best intent and lead with grace. We are encouraging staff to continue to accept late work without penalty and allow students to retake important assessments or to offer up a different product when projects go awry.

We are very much hoping that all students will earn a credit for first semester and that the credit will be a letter grade of A-D.

(Students do have the option of receiving a “P” – “Pass” grade first semester and teachers will issue it when they are working with students who have been in there swinging but have underlying or mitigating circumstances that make even the generous Covid-grading guidance insufficient to get them across that 60% mark. Teachers are glad for this option this time around.)

If students do not make it into passing territory, teachers will be issuing Fs which will mean that students will likely need to repeat the course, or Ns which mean that there is a plan being developed to replace the N grade with a letter grade of A-D after a specified portion of mastery is demonstrated.

Our staff is working overtime trying to keep students from dipping into F-land this semester. They are inviting kids into afterschool learning center, meeting with them in afternoon differentiated instructional time, focusing on only key learnings, cajoling, caterwauling, coaxing, and, yes, sometimes crying to get kids over and through.

Please make sure that you are looking over PowerSchool this week to find out if there are any classes where things have gone sideways. More than likely, you’ve already heard from us if they have.
We are all here working every day and would love to assist if we can.

Just like the young lady here yesterday discovered, sometimes a little support can make that hill very much less daunting.

2nd SEMESTER & 2021-2022 REGISTRATION
2nd Semester Begins Tuesday, February 2: On Tuesday, February 2, we will start 2nd Semester with a 4-5-6 day due to the Monday Semester Break Day.

The district is creating new class Teams for 2nd semester that will be active on the first day of the semester. We are working hard to ensure that we have a smooth start to 2nd semester, but there may be hiccups on the first day, we thank you for your patience ahead of time. Teachers will be sending out new Teams meeting invites for the first day of the semester, so be sure to check your Teams or Outlook calendar for updates on February 2. 1st semester Teams will still be available for students finishing up assignments.

All of our electives are full year, so for most students, 2nd semester will not have many changes. Freshmen in Health or Fitness 1st semester will automatically be switched into the other class for 2nd semester. There will be some other schedule changes as we work to balance classes for our tentative return to in-person learning on March 1 to ensure proper spacing for safe social distancing in the classrooms. We are working hard to minimize these changes, but they are necessary.

Students can log into PowerSchool now to see their 2nd semester schedule (please note that there still will be changes).
Registration for Fall 2021: We are currently planning for Fall registration. We will use Advisory to provide information to students about core and elective classes. Here is the tentative plan. We'll have more information in next week's LC News.

  • February 2-5 - In Advisory, we will walk students through the options in core and elective classes, dual credit options (Running Start, AP, NewTech, and College in the HS), and how to register in PowerSchool. That week, we'll also share the videos with parents with the same information.
  • February 8-12 - we will offer afternoon drop in sessions for students to come ask questions and get help with the process. We will also offer a few evening Q&A sessions for parents to come ask questions of our counselors. We will also begin working with our feeder middle schools to begin the registration process for our incoming 9th graders.

We will be using PowerSchool to register. Students MUST know their login/password to register (see the directions in the Information section below to test out access and how to get help).

If you are looking to choice transfer to a different SPS school, the Choice Transfer Applications will open February 8 - March 8. To apply, go here and click on Apply.

We will begin posting information on the www.lctigers.com and we have created a channel in the Lewis and Clark HS TEAM to share information. Students can view registration forms for their next grade level and documents from elective teachers that share the highlights of their classes. Students will use the registration forms for planning purposes but will not be submitting hard copies this year. They will enter all of their registration requests into PowerSchool in February. You can access the information and forms below for your planning:

Preparing for 2021-2022 Registration: We will begin registration for 2021-2022 in January. The process will be all online through PowerSchool. In order to prepare, it will be important for you know your login and password to PowerSchool and you can get into the program (the login/password is different from your Clever/MS365 login/password).

Directions: Using a computer (not your phone), go to PowerSchool and try log in (do not try the links to reset it yourself, they do not work and be sure to use the link above and not access through Clever or using a Google search for PowerSchool which may take you to a different district's servers).

If you get in, you're good to go! Please write down the login/password in case you forget it before January. There is a chance that even if you know your login/password, it might take you to a screen that says "an administrator has changed your password". You will need to select a new password, so just follow the directions on the screen and enter your current password, then choose a new one that is 8 characters or more.

If you can't get in, your password will need to be reset. Click on the link below to send an email to Mrs. Meyer. Provide your name and simply ask for a password reset. You will receive an email back with directions on how to use a temporary password so that you can get into the system and choose a new password. Please write down the login and new password you choose in case you forget it before January.
