FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
With all of the snow of late, I’ve been able to dig into my nightstand’s pile of books and make some good headway.

There are some gems in there.

Many are texts picked up at state principal conferences or recommendations from other folks in education. And sometimes I get a recommendation from one of our Tiger parents.

(Some, like the Chief Bruno books by Martin Walker, arrived on my doorstep because a friend noted how much I love, love, love French food, and she thought of me when reading the multi-paragraph descriptions of butter, mushrooms and the oh-so perfect omelet they gave themselves up to. She didn’t seem particularly impressed, but I was wowed…)

This month, I read and recommend Scalia Speaks: Reflections on Law, Faith, and Life Well Lived. It’s a collection of speeches by former Supreme Antonin Scalia. He discusses character and caring and family and values. I don’t always find myself aligned with all of his socio-political thinking, but his was a very nimble mind and he had a huge heart for family. There are a lot of affirming things in it that make me think about how to support character development, a service orientation, and appreciation for the arts in our school. Thanks, Todd W. for the recommendation!

This month I also read Brene Brown’s new book, Dare to Lead: Brave Work, Tough Conversations, Whole Hearts . It’s pretty wonderful and I’m going to go back immediately and reread it more slowly and thoughtfully; I was gobbling during the first go-round. I’d recommend it to anyone – not just someone in a professional leadership role – because the crux of her work is that everyone leads and everyone has to become better at being fully human and humane in doing so.

Finally, I am currently reading a more challenging work; Academic Profiling: Latinos, Asian Americans and the Achievement Gap by Gilda Ochoa This is a pretty new book and it won several awards when it came out just a couple years ago. The lessons about profiling of learners can be applied beyond the particular racial/ethnic groups presented here; as a practice, it’s sadly in effect all across the educational system. But understanding it and being able to see it and address it is the only way we make learning more equitable for all kids. It’s full of anecdotes and kid voice – I really recommend it.

Today, I’m off to Tacoma to catch up with our Lady Tigers and their basketball journey through the state tournament. I couldn’t be prouder of these WONDERFUL young women – they are strong and fierce, smart as whips, funny and kind and beyond incredibly talented. So hopeful they claim the title – it’s so deserved!

AP Test Registration Is Open February 15-March 20: Students in Advanced Placement (AP) classes have the opportunity to take AP exams in May that offer the following benefits:
  • Exemption by your college or university from beginning courses and permission to take higher-level courses in certain fields
  • Academic credit for exams taken
  • Tuition savings
  • Eligibility for honors and other special programs open to students who have received AP recognition

The fee for EACH Advanced Placement test is $94. How to Register: Students received the registration paperwork in their AP classes to bring home. To determine payment options, look at the chart below to determine which category you fall under. Please, do not let money be the reason why you do not take an AP exam, we want to help!

Most students take the SAT during their junior or senior year in high school. At least half of all students take the SAT twice - in the spring of their junior year and in the fall of their senior year. Most students also improve their score the second time around.
  • March 9 (deadline to register, February 8) - not LC (at FERRIS or NC)
  • May 4 (deadline to register, April 5)
  • June 1 (deadline to register, May 3)

The SAT test costs $64.50 per test with the essay (47.50 without the essay). Late registration incurs an additional $29 fee. If you cannot afford to pay the fee, you can see your counselor to apply for a fee waiver before you register online (click here for fee waiver information: http://sat.collegeboard.org/register/sat-fee-waivers).
Free Online SAT Practice: All 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students who took the PSAT in October can take the next step on their SAT practice journey by linking their College Board and Khan Academy accounts , which unlocks a free SAT study plan. Linking their accounts will send their PSAT scores to Khan Academy, giving them access to a personalized experience on Official SAT Practice . Research shows that studying on Official SAT Practice for 20 hours is associated with an average score gain of 115 points from the PSAT/NMSQT to the SAT. That's nearly double the average score gain of students who don't use Khan Academy.
ACT Testing: ACT college admissions test will be offered on Saturdays at FERRIS or EAST VALLEY High School. For information on test registration, visit: www.act.org. Be to Ferris by 7:45am, bring a printed copy of your test ticket, photo ID, pencils, and calculator. The test will end at 12:15pm (or 1:00pm if you are taking the ACT Plus Writing). The ACT costs $62.50 with the writing test ($46 without). The ACT will be offered: April 13 and June 8.
