FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

August 19, 2021

Greeting and Happy Summer “Tiger” students and families,

I have been really spending the past few days and weeks thinking about each of you and hoping that you and your families are safe and well. We continue to experience fires spreading across our region endangering homes, neighborhoods, and communities, and the air quality has been a challenge as well. We are persevering through the aspects that COVID 19, the Delta variant, continues to present for us, but we will “champion” forward while doing everything we can to assure the safety and well-being of all students, staff, and families.

Therefore, we have worked on and continue to work on multiple plans to support having a Freshman and New students to LC Orientation as well as an Open House event. These plans are contingent based on guidance we, as a district, receive from the CDC, State, and Local Health Officials. As guidance is updated, our Health and Safety support staff, along with our District leadership, will provide this information in a timely manner. I appreciate your patience, grace, and understanding.

Looking forward to seeing all our “Tigers” back in the building and hearing their collective roar which has been missing from our building for too long!

Enjoy the remainder of your summer and “Go Tigers”

Ivan Corley

Principal

FRESHMAN _ NEW STUDENT TOURS-1.png

Freshman & New Student Orientation

Thursday August 26 - 4:00-7:00pm

Welcome new LC Tigers! This is a drop-in model for students where you can come any time during the 3 hour block (please plan on only attending for 30 minutes or less to ensure safe distancing). We know that going to a new school can be very stressful. We’re providing this time for you to:

  • pick up your schedule
  • find your classes
  • get familiar with the building

In following state law, be sure to wear your mask.

OPEN_HOUSE.png

Open House

Tuesday August 31 - 6:00-8:00pm

We’re looking forward to meeting parents/guardians before school starts! This is a drop-in format so you have flexibility in when you arrive and what teachers you see (please plan on only attending for 30 minutes or less to ensure safe distancing). You’ll receive a printed copy of your student's schedule showing classes, rooms, and teacher names as you enter through our new Commons where you will be able to ask questions.

Also, in following state law, be sure to wear your mask.

Schedules and Schedule Changes

Schedules are available to students and parents in PowerSchool. Schedules will NOT be mailed home, so log into your account to ensure you have the correct login/password. If PowerSchool prompts you that your password has been reset by an administrator, follow the directions on the screen to reset (new passwords must be 8 characters and only use letters/numbers). If you don't remember your login, do NOT try to reset it on the site, it will not work, instead email Theresa Meyer for reset help.

Your schedule is likely to change over the next two weeks as we balance classes. If you have a schedule change request due to an error on your schedule or you want to change a class, email Theresa Meyer now to avoid having changes once school begins (counselors do not return until August 23).

We cannot accommodate specific teacher or period requests due to balancing and the complexity of the schedule. Many schedule changes will also require the movement of multiple classes in order to make the change work, so thank you for your flexibility.

ACCEPTED.jpg

The Accepted Wall & Good News is Back

We are ready to celebrate our incredible students!

Accepted: The Accepted Wall is ready to fill up with Senior celebrations! Please let Theresa Meyer know when you have been accepted to a post-high school institution (2 year, 4 year, military, tech school, etc.). Please include scholarship information so we can share the good news! Let's fill up the wall!

Good News: If you have good news to share about any of our Tigers, please send it to Theresa Meyer to be included in the LCNYCU.

LAPTOP-BOOK-CHECKOUT.png

Laptop & Textbook Checkout

Students will check out their school laptops in English classes on Wednesday, September 8. If you do not have an English class, you can come to the Library that day to check one out. If you are absent, you can check one out in the Business Office.

Textbooks will be checked out with teachers in classes that are using textbooks.

Laptops not checked in from the Spring: All district laptops that are in circulation will be disabled on August 20, so you will need to check out a new one. You can bring the device to LC any day from 7:00am-3:00pm and we'll check it in for you and remove the fine from your account. Also, if you did not turn in the power cable when you turned in your laptop in the spring, you can bring it back to the Business Office to remove your fine.

SCHOOLFEES.png

Paying Fees (Yearbook, GSL, Parking)

GSL, Yearbooks, and parking permits are on sale now:

  • $42 student GSL Card (required for all athletes)
  • $47 Yearbook, yearbook pre‐sales end December 19.
  • $5 student parking pass (must be purchased in the Business Office)
  • Optional: Donation to Yearbook fund for students who are unable to purchase one. Every dollar donated helps a family in financial need. Thank you for your donation!

Download the order form for details on how to pay in person or online (forms are also being mailed home).

SCHOOLLUNCHES.jpg

School Lunches & Free/Reduced Lunch Applications

Although breakfast and lunch are free to all students this school year, filling out the free and reduced meal application helps ensure school funding is maintained for essential programs. Students who qualify for the meal program can get additional benefits, like Pandemic EBT, waived sports fees, waived testing fees ($0 for AP Exams!), and many others.

The Free and Reduced meal applications will be mailed to families at the end of this week and must be processed by October 1 to ensure school funding and that students qualify for additional benefits. The online meal application is available starting August 25 and it is the fastest and most effective way to apply.

  • Open an account using a valid email and password of your choice.
  • Within minutes, you will be sent a link to begin registration.
  • After selecting your program and completing registration be sure to click Confirm Registration.
  • You will see a confirmation page and you are done!
SCHOOLBUS.png

School Bus Registration and Routes

Please REGISTER your students to ride the school bus. Eligibility rules and the link to register are on the district website.

The BUS ROUTE FINDER will be active, with current bus stops and times for all schools, on August 24. Please VERIFY your student’s arrival AND dismissal bus (route) number, as TO and FROM school bus (route) numbers do not always match. Most bus routes have changed, so please share with your students their bus number TO SCHOOL and HOME.

COVID Precautions: Masks are required to ride the bus. Durham drivers, bus attendants and students will wear masks at all times. Windows and vents will be open for improved airflow. Seating charts will be required for all buses.

PICTUREDAY.png

School Picture Day

School Picture Day is Tuesday, September 9. All students are required to have pictures taken for the yearbook and student ID/GSL Card. Students may not wear costumes for their official school photo. Freshmen will have pictures taken during Science and all other students will go during Social Studies. If you do not have those classes, you can go to the Auditorium when you have a break in your day.

You can order pictures at Dorian Studios or use the form that will be sent home.

PARKING.png

Student and Parent/Visitor Parking

Parent/Visitor Parking: LC does NOT have designated visitor parking, so you can park at any of the metered spots across the street. For after-hours events, you can park for free in any of the parking lots under the freeway. The doors to the Commons building are handicap accessible.

Student Drop-off/Pick-Up: Buses pick up students all around the perimeter of the school. Please do not park in these locations before school/after school.

Student Parking: LC students can park in the two freeway lots (in front of the Field House and in front of the church to the east). Be sure to display your student parking permit to avoid getting a ticket in the student lots. Student parking permits can be purchased in the Business Office for $5. The lot directly in front of the main building and the parking garage are only for LC staff and are monitored for cars without staff permits.

AP_CLASSROOM.png

AP/College Board Accounts

If you are enrolled in an Advanced Placement (AP) class, you will need to create or access your existing College Board account (this is only for students that have a class with "AP" in the course title). Your account will give you access to AP Classroom resources and access for ordering your AP exams (we will order exams later in September). This account is not connected to your school accounts, so you will need to save the login and password (LC teachers do not have access to your login info, so if you forgot your login info, you will need to recover it on the AP website). Click here to go to the College Board website to either make sure you can access your account from last year or to create a new one if you are taking your first AP class.
