FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
Years ago, when our littles were really little, I spent one summer at home with my then 7-, 5-, and 2-year-old, getting our basement playroom all set up with “stations”.

I had Lego stations, literacy stations, number stations, an art easel, a play kitchen, and I think I had a computer station where I was sure that my youngest would learn fine motor skills playing a charming little computer game called “Melody Mouse.’”

I worked on it for days, hanging station labels from fishing line tacked to our ceiling tiles, going without sleep well into the night so that I could tape off station borders on the floor.

It looked like Ikea had a baby with Montessori.

I was so proud of the little space.

I brought my kids down to their new “special place” for the big reveal.

Emma burst into tears, crying about the wretched old bean bag chair that had been her reading corner, replaced now with a book case and wooden rocker. Mac took up several Legos and started bazooka-ing them at the station labels hanging from the ceiling, using a paper roller tube he stole off of the easel as his launcher. Duncan took a couple passes at Melody Mouse and then toddled off to my husband’s home computer to play Lemmings – a game much better than “Meddy Mouse” which was “stupid and for babies!”

It was crushing, but it was one of those epiphany sorts of moments as I realized how much of a high strung little mom I was : I was a control freak.

I realized then that it wasn’t teaching that had made me a white-knuckled manager of all the things.

Nope. I was a white-knuckled manager of ALL THE THINGS and so I went into teaching.

It was a lesson in real humility and started me on a deliberate path to “let go” of a lot of the control issues that I had surfaced.

It’s funny now, because before Covid, I would have told you that I “used” to be pretty Type A, but that I was now very easygoing and fine with uncertainty.

I would have been lying.

As we are leaning into getting our facility ready for your Tigers, I keep finding my old micromanager self rearing her ugly head.

I want us to have answers to every inquiry, assuage every anxiety, anticipate every hiccup, prepare for every contingency, and make sure every I is dotted and T crossed.

We are close, but I have to remind myself daily that we are going to experience surprises, manage situations that we didn’t see coming, continue to love kids when the restroom lines are long and when the masks feel weird.

Bottom line – we will be more than ready. We will experience some adventures together. We will keep your kids and our staff safe. We will laugh and we will only let the obsessive control freak principal out to triple check the safety stuff. That stuff NEEDS obsessive triple checking.

Otherwise, we will focus on loving up the kids we have missed so very much when they return.

PREPARING FOR RETURN TO LC!
Register to Ride the School Bus: Secondary students must register to ride the bus. This can be completed on the district website at spokaneschools.org/busregistration. Find the link on the SPS homepage (look for the school bus icon!).

Secondary SpED students are already being rerouted for a March 1 match of the new secondary bell times. Families will be notified of the reroute info.
Please also let the transportation team know if you have students who may have special circumstances or may be in need of specialized transportation due to their educational schedule.

For all students riding the bus, the COVID Safety Tips are located on the bus registration page.
Hybrid Learning Cohorts: We will be sending all current Tigers an email next week that lists their cohort, their current schedule (with room numbers so they can find their classes), entry door info, and lunch info. Keep an eye out in your Outlook email for this important information.

In order to ensure social distancing when we return to in-person learning, students have been divided into 2 cohorts based on the last digit of the home address.
  • Even numbered addresses (ex. 1546 E 5th) are in the A cohort
  • Odd numbered addresses (ex. 1567 E 5th) are in the B cohort

At this time, there is NO notation in PowerSchool, Clever, or Teams that shows the cohort, it is solely based on address. On the PowerSchool screen that lists periods, there is an (A) next to the period numbers, this does NOT indicate cohort (it is just a quirk of PowerSchool and it has no meaning).

2020-21 Speech & Debate Tournament Season: After months of careful consideration, the local speech & debate coaches made the decision to host all the 2020-21 GSL Speech & Debate Tournaments online for middle school and high school students due to the ongoing pandemic.

Every day bears out the importance of teaching speech and debate at our schools. Our mission remains the same: to connect, support, and inspire a diverse community committed to empowering students through speech and debate. The GSL State Tournament offers students an unparalleled platform to share their stories and speak up on the issues they care about, and we (the coaches), stay committed to giving students that opportunity through an online state event.

Good News: As you know, it’s been a difficult year for our students and local families who are living with a daily fear of the eviction moratorium ending, not being able to pay the household bills, and losing power & utilities.

That’s why this month, Spokane County Educators are again supporting SNAP (Spokane Neighborhood Action Partners). SNAP is a local non-profit organization that has been helping the Spokane community for over 50 years – our Spokane Educator’s Competition LightsOn Campaign (Round Two!) is helping families and individuals in Spokane pay their power bills and keep their Lights ON. Can you help us support them by donating today to our LightsOn Campaign?

You can help our students, their families, and our Spokane neighbors in need by choosing the school that you want to support and donating at: https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/LightsOn
The competition ends on February 26. Prizes go to the winning schools’ staff members!
Thank you, in advance, for your generosity! Even if you are not able to donate, please follow and share us on Facebook and Instagram!

Sincerely,
LCHS Educators Andrea Bass, Mark Robbins, and Jennifer Showalter - Lights On Campaign Coordinators
