FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
Next week will be a fascinating one with Tuesday’s election results due to roll in; the school district and library system here in Spokane have important measures on the ballot and, as always, we encourage all eligible voters to vote and to exercise their right (and privilege!) to take part in governance in this way.

To encourage great citizenship, every time a student here at LC has an 18th birthday, we bring them down to the office for a Happy Birthday greeting and present them with a voter’s registration packet. It is such an honor to be able to be an actual voter in our country and we want to make sure that all of our Tigers get to take part as soon as they can.

But BEFORE Tuesday’s election, there is a great opportunity for you to make YOUR voice heard regarding important issues here at school. Our district is engaging a consultancy group to make recommendations regarding student safety, and they will be at Lewis and Clark on Tuesday, November 6. On Monday evening, November 5 , we will be hosting a parent safety round table here at school. It will be a chance for you to discuss priorities for student safety with school leaders so that we can share them with the school safety auditors, and so that we can do better work on behalf of families who worry about student self-harm, about bullying and dating safety, about violence and threat of violence. Please join us in the LC Career Center – room 105 – Monday evening from six-thirty until eight to share your thoughts on these important issues.

Veterans Day: For Veterans Day, we will honor the relatives of LC students and staff who have served in the US Armed Forces. If you, a spouse, child, parent, grandparent, aunt/uncle, etc. has served, please send a picture via email this weekend to [email protected] (with your student's name and your veteran’s name, branch, rank if known). In next week's LCNYCU, we'll share the link to the presentation.
November 6 Facility Improvement Bond Election: Voters will be asked to make three decisions by Tuesday, November 6 about building improved facilities to provide new opportunities for students and the community. Spokane Public Schools, the City of Spokane, and the Spokane Public Library have partnered to create value for the citizens they serve. Together, the city and schools measures will:
  • Build three new middle schools and modernize three existing middle schools
  • Build three new libraries and modernize four existing library facilities
  • Provide input on the location for replacing the aging Joe Albi Stadium
  • Build an addition to LC adding classrooms and a commons area (see renderings below)

The additional and replacement middle schools give the district enough space to move sixth graders out of elementary school and into a three-grade middle school model to lengthen the time between significant transitions for students. Shifting sixth graders reduces class sizes and eases crowding at elementary schools. Additional investments will be made in safety, technology, and smaller building improvements district-wide.

A change in how Washington state funds public education is creating a $2.20 per thousand decrease in property tax rates beginning in 2019. The bond proposes reinvesting $0.98 of that reduction into schools and city libraries. More information is available at partnershipspokane.org .

COLLEGE & CAREER
SchooLinks: We are transitioning to a new college application tracking system called SchooLinks. Students can access their account at www.lctigers.com - look for the link on the right.
FAFSA: October 1 marks an important day as it is when the 2018-19 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened. It is highly recommended that all LC Seniors file the FAFSA. It is the first step in getting financial aid -- including grants, scholarships, work study, and loans - from any college, technical school, or career training program. Go to to www.fafsa.gov for more information.

FSA ID: In order to file the FAFSA, both the parent and student must first create FSA IDs. We strongly encourage you to create your FSA ID now at fsaid.ed.gov because it takes approximately 1-3 days for the FSA ID to be verified and ready to be used. See the FAFSA FAQ document attached for more information. This is an important first step to apply for the FAFSA.

Concorde Pears from Bunny Laine Orchard in Malott Washington are the Harvest Fruit for November! Students will have an opportunity to try local Concorde Pears fresh on the salad bar and baked in ”Honey Cinnamon Baked Pears with Yogurt and Granola” (see recipe below) on the school lunch line. Fun facts about the pears:
  • Bunny Laine Orchard takes pride in selling their organic certified pears!
