FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
We are all talking a LOT these days about grading.

The pandemic forced our hand in so many ways in terms of what we should be grading, how we should be grading, to whom should we report grading, when should we grade, etc.

So much of what seemed crucial in terms of gradebook priorities have had a tendency to fall out as way less important when teachers put themselves in the mindsets of fifteen-year-olds who are trying to fit learning in as they navigate the mental and emotional tsunamis that are this school year.

So staff has focused on social-emotional support provision, understanding that brains that are unregulated thanks to loneliness, overwhelm, isolation, confusion, existential dread, distraction, anxiety, and all the rest of the “stuff” cannot focus to the depth and breadth that they could have in prior years.

No real learning can get in and “stick” in a brain that is way too busy dealing with the toxic slurry created by Covid.

So our staff is focused on support and relationality, but teachers have to quell their own anxiety when they think about leaving students underserved in terms of content and skills.

We know that our next few years will be focused on implementing a recovery plan to help to recoup gaps in learning from the past few months.

It’s such a tricky time for teachers, but we are going to get through it and things will normalize into a new way for teachers to respond to grading and instruction.

I anticipate that classes will have a LOT more independent, student-led work happening as we serve students who all have gaps but not the same gaps – my bet is that we will see students using grading to help guide them as they select means of proving their mastery of specific skills to instructors who will be offering feedback to them on their tasks.

It could look fairly different, but I think it is going to be a good different.

And it’s just so great to think about those days when all of us will be together again!

Tiger Fund Scholarship: The Lewis & Clark Tiger Fund Scholarship was started by the LC Class of 1966 in 2006 in order to recognize an LC senior who has overcome personal and/or life difficulties and has made a commitment to furthering his/her education after graduation from Lewis & Clark High School. We know that there are many students who have potential for college success but often get overlooked for scholarship assistance. We also know that character and desire to improve play a large part in future success in school and life. Two scholarships for $1,000 are available from the 2021 LC Tiger Fund Scholarship fund. You can download the application here. Here are criteria for the scholarship selection:

  1. Applicants must be a LC Senior graduating in 2021.
  2. Must have a verifiable financial need that would make it difficult to pursue a college or university education without monetary assistance.
  3. Must have had a personal life challenge/difficulty that they have overcome.
  4. Must have a cumulative grade point average between 2.5 and 3.49.
LC Penny Drive - We Need Your Change!: Did you know that approximately 450 children are born each year with a disability in Spokane County? Help has been there because of people like you who care enough to help. For over 50 years, JOYA, a non-profit organization, has helped children birth to age 3, with a variety of syndromes or developmental delays by providing physical, occupational, speech and cognitive therapies. The Tiger Depot student store is having their Annual Penny Drive where we encourage all Tigers to participate in supporting Joya. Donations will be taken anytime from April 14 to April 30 through debit/credit card donations by texting LC to 509-588-0515 or you and/or your son/daughter can drop off change/cash/check before school every day at the collection jugs at each entrance. You can also mail a donation to the school at Lewis & Clark High School, Attn: Lisa Underhill, 521 West 4th Avenue, Spokane, WA 99204. Last year we were able to donate almost $4,500 and we would love to surpass that amount this year. AP Testing Schedule: AP Exams will be administered May 18-28. This year due to COVID, College Board has added flexibility in the exam calendar and Spokane Public Schools has opted to have most exams taken at home on a computer. College Board does require some exams to be administered in-person due to special technology requirements and the difficulty of some exams (math and science) working in a digital format. The exams in blue will be taken at home on a computer and the exams in yellow will be proctored at LC (all rooms will follow district social distance and safety guidelines).

We will have more information soon on the details of testing, but for now, here are actions you can take to ensure that you are ready and signed up for the correct exam:

  • College Board Account: Because most tests are online, you will need to be able to easily access your College Board account. Go to: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/ to make sure you can get in. If you do not remember your CB login/password, you will need to contact them directly as we do not have access to that information. Be sure to write down your username/password as you will need it for testing.

  • Payment: If you have an outstanding balance on your AP Exams, please pay ASAP through the Business Office or the online payment portal on www.lctigers.com - we will need all exams paid for before the testing window begins. Contact our Business Office if you need assistance in the process (354-6880).

  • Canceling and Exam: please go to your College Board account to verify which tests you are taking. If you need to cancel an exam, email Theresa Meyer ASAP to begin the process of canceling and processing a refund. There is NO fee for cancellation and you will receive a 100% refund if you have already paid.

SAT School Day for Juniors Update: In consultation with the Spokane Regional Health Department’s guidance and each high school principal, it was decided to cancel the district’s SAT School Day administration this school year.

In prior school years the SAT School Day has been a valuable opportunity to support all students having as many post-secondary options as possible. This school year there has been some understandable shifts from colleges and the following are important points to consider:

Students who still wish to take an SAT Saturday test should reach out to their counselor or Mr. Norton for more information on using waivers or getting financial support to cover the cost of an SAT test.
