February 17 - In 1867, the first ship passed through the Suez Canal.

February 18 - In 1930, while studying photographs taken in January, Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto.
February 19 - In 1945, during World War II, some 30,000 U.S. Marines landed on the Pacific island of Iwo Jima, where they encountered fierce resistance from Japanese forces. The U.S. took control of the strategically important island after a month-long battle.

February 20 - In 1962, astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth as he flew aboard the Friendship 7 Mercury capsule.

February 21 - In 1972, President Richard Nixon arrived in the People's Republic of China for an official seven-day visit to three Chinese cities.

February 22 - In 1980, in a stunning upset, the United States Olympic hockey team defeated the Soviets at Lake Placid, New York, 4-to-3. The U.S. team went on to win the gold medal.

Whether it's the government, the military, a business or a church, leadership can mean the difference between failure and success. The Bible has outlined for us some of the qualities of a good leader that we should work to develop if we have any opportunity to lead. There are also many ways we can encourage and support our leaders to help them achieve success. Most importantly, we should always remember to pray for the leaders God has placed in authority over us.
