2018 Convention Update: Submit Your Questions for Q&A Session with LCUL's New CEO

Last year, we added 30-minute hot topic sessions to our convention lineup and based on attendee feedback, they were an overwhelming success. This year, we're brining them back with one session being an interactive Q&A session with LCUL's new President/CEO.

Our 2018 emcee will host a casual conversation on the main stage as Bob answers questions asked by YOU. Attendees can submit questions at a special location during the event or you can submit them beforehand by emailing [email protected]. Remember, anything goes so don't be shy. Bob is ready and willing to answer the hard hitting questions and those that will help us get to know him more personally. Either way, join us on Friday at 3:10 p.m!

Victory for credit unions on military bases; See How Louisiana's Delegation Voted
Credit unions will continue to be able to meet the financial services needs of America's servicemen and women on military installations in the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The Leagues and CUNA led the charge to strike a provision in the House version of the NDAA that would have put credit unions at a disadvantage when serving members on military bases.

Section 2808 of the House version of NDAA was designed to treat federal and state-chartered insured depository institutions equally, but the legislative definition excluded credit unions. "While we believe this was an unintended drafting error, the blanketed term may have put hundreds of military credit unions in jeopardy," said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle.

Under the Federal Credit Union Act, on-base credit unions are exempt from the costs associated with leases, utilities, and services, which includes the furnishing of office space and/or land and ATM placement.

LCUL initially contacted Anthony Hernandez, President/CEO of the Defense Credit Union Council, and our Louisiana credit unions with branches on military bases. All agreed that this legislation could impact operations.

LCUL reached out to the Louisiana Congressional delegation expressing concern with this provision and then followed up with a letter to Louisiana Representative Ralph Abraham who also serves on the Armed Services Committee, opposing the provision. We are proud to report that our delegation voted in favor of credit unions.
Bite of Reality App Grants Now Available from Foundation

Grant Funds Available to Add Technology to the Reality Fair Experience

Credit union organizations can now apply for a Bite of Reality App Grant from the National Credit Union Foundation (the Foundation) through August 31, 2018.

The Foundation is looking to distribute up to $50,000 in grant funds to credit union organizations as part of this effort.

The RMJ Foundation developed a Bite of Reality App to modernize reality fairs and add technology to the in-person reality fair experience, allowing students to use their mobile phone or tablet during the fair in place of pen and paper.  Using media that is second nature to them allows students to fully immerse into the reality fair experience. The Bite of Reality App replaces student materials - notebooks, calculators, pencils, checkbooks, and worksheets - while still requiring the students to engage with the volunteers and navigate the hard sales environment that is integral to the reality fair experience.

"The Foundation has seen first-hand the profound effectiveness of Reality Fairs for over ten years.  We are proud to fund the opportunity to bring technology, additional scale and reach to the reality fair experience through the Bite of Reality App," said Gigi Hyland, Foundation Executive Director.

Support from the National Credit Union Foundation has allowed the app to be customized and used by others across the credit union movement. Benefits of utilizing the app include gained efficiencies and savings on the purchase, storage, and shipping of student materials.  Credit unions that have used the app have seen increased engagement by students and the simplified process allows students to complete the fair in less time with fewer volunteers.  The Foundation is funding up to $5,000 per organization to cover the cost of basic customization of the app.

CUNA Mutual's AdvantEdge Analytics Launches New Industry Data Platform Integrated with Microsoft's Common Data Model
CUNA Mutual's AdvantEdge Analytics announced it has launched its new data platform for the credit union industry, which leverages Microsoft's technology. This collaboration between Microsoft and AdvantEdge Analytics, announced in March, debuts one of the first industry-specific Common Data Model extensions designed for credit unions. The announcement is in conjunction with Microsoft Inspire 2018.

The AdvantEdge Analytics™ Data Platform helps credit unions digitally transform by expanding their ability to connect and scale to any data system or third-party technology, ultimately improving the member experience. AdvantEdge Analytics' customers, Idaho Central Credit Union, Michigan Educational Credit Union, and Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union (RBFCU) are currently in private preview with the new platform and will begin full implementation shortly.

The newly launched data platform delivers deeper insights into a credit union's business data through one standardized way of organizing their data assets. The AdvantEdge Analytics Data Platform seamlessly integrates into the Microsoft digital toolset, which will allow insights to be gleaned out of Microsoft Power BI and other tools like Microsoft Dynamics 365, Microsoft Power Apps, and Microsoft Flow in the future.
