Frontiers in Medicine (Adkison, H., et al.) 5.24.23 published “Lyme disease and the pursuit of a clinical cure.” The review addresses mechanisms that are validated or challenged by the scientific evidence (in vitro, in vivo, and clinical) with a particular focus on the role of immune response and resolution of Borrelia spp. infections in humans. Also discussed are the next generation of treatments aimed at establishing biomarkers that will predict both treatment responses and outcomes. Read more.
IDCases (Carnazzo M. C., et al.) 2023, published “Lyme disease presenting as complete heart block in a young man: Case report and review of pathogenesis.” The case report focuses on a young man with complete heart block due to Lyme carditis, a rare complication of Lyme disease primarily affecting young adults, with men being more affected than women by a 3:1 ratio. American Society for Microbiology Journal (Telford S. R., et al.) 06.20.2023, published “Powassan virus persistence after acute infection.” This study aimed to better understand the lasting neurological effects of Powassan encephalitis by observing the effects of Powassan virus (POWV) in mice. Powassan encephalitis is a severe tickborne virus with a high mortality rate and lasting symptoms in many individuals after recovery. Read more.
Animals (Gehlen H., et al.) 06.10.2023, published “Seroprevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasma phagocytophilum Infections in German Horses.” The study aimed to gain further knowledge on Lyme borreliosis in horses due to limited data in the field. Samples were taken from horses suspected of having Lyme borreliosis as well as healthy horses and then tested for antibodies. Results showed 23% of the suspected horses and 17% of the healthy horses were positive for Borrelia burgorferi sensu lato infection. Read more.

Microorganisms (Lange, R. E., et al.) 06.12.2023, published “Diversification of Bourbon Virus in New York State.” Researchers worked to clarify the genetic characteristics of Bourbon virus (BRBV) strains from the state of New York. The study identified two different strains of BRBV in New York State and suggests that these strains could “contribute to increased spread of BRBV in the northeastern US.” Read more.
Cureus (Arshad, H., et al.) 06.14.2023, published “Tick-Borne Myopericarditis With Positive Anaplasma, Lyme, and Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) Serology: A Case Report.” The report focuses on a 61-year-old male who was unknowingly presenting with myopericarditis symptoms for two weeks, which can occur in some Lyme carditis cases. The symptoms eventually led to septic shock. After furthered investigation, it was discovered that the individual had a recent tick exposure which prompted a change in treatment and proved successful. Read more.

International Journal of General Medicine (Johnson, L., et al.) 6.17.23, published “Does Biological Sex Matter in Lyme Disease? The Need for Sex-Disaggregated Data in Persistent Illness.” In this study researchers examined the outcome differences between men and women with Lyme disease. Investigators analyzed self-reported clinical data from 2170 patients in the MyLymeData patient registry, as well as review of other Lyme disease studies. Read more.

Scientific Reports (Gyllemark, P., et al.) 6.15.23, published “Intrathecal Th17-driven inflammation is associated with prolonged post-treatment convalescence for patients with Lyme neuroborreliosis.” In this study, researchers investigated the forces of identified cytokines and chemokines that are responsible for inflammatory response during Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) to identify potential biomarkers for this inflammatory activity. The Army (Douglas Holl, Defense Centers for Public Health-Aberdeen Public Affairs) 5.31.23, published a study by Department of Defense (DOD) Military Tick Identification/Infection Confirmation Kit Program (MilTICK program) on the effectiveness of permethrin-treated uniforms against ticks. Ticks submitted by service members wearing permethrin-treated uniforms were much less likely to have become engorged. The program is open to active-duty service members, DOD beneficiaries, contractors and civilians, and has been offering free identification and analysis of ticks that have been removed from human patients for 20 years. Scientific Reports (Inzalaco, H.N., et al.) published 5.15.23 “Ticks harbor and excrete chronic wasting disease prions.” This study investigated the role ticks play in the transmission of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in members of the deer family (cervids). CWD
is a neurodegenerative disease caused by infectious prions (misfolded proteins) that result in a slow but progressive and fatal outcome for both domestic and wild cervids that are exposed. Both direct and indirect routes of exposure and transmission are found to contribute to increase of prevalence and geographic spread of CWD. Read more.
