Ahoy my fellow captains,

Well, my fellow Captains, we have made another full revolution around our sun. The days are getting longer and here we are already halfway through February.

This is the first-year anniversary of The Hook. I hope you have enjoyed these quarterly newsletters and found interesting articles and facts about our Great Lake Erie.

Belated Happy Valentines to all my fellow Captains wherever you are. Hope you had a lovely day!

This winter season has seen many strange weather events. Hopefully everyone has stayed safe.

Launch dates are not to far away and many of you may already have those dates scheduled. It’s time for our boats to start coming out of their slumber and getting ready to meet those dates.

The 2024 Ohio Charter Captains Conference is coming up on March 2, 2024; don’t forget to register by February 28, 2024. See the Tory Gabriel’s article below.

As for me, I’m still kicking the big C’s A**. I’m halfway through my chemo treatments, and I’m holding my own pretty well. It picked the wrong Captain this time!

Can’t wait to see everyone on the water this spring.

Until then,

Tight lines and signing off,

Respectfully,

Captain Peg

"Just the Facts" Captains

It's all about Seiche

January 2024 saw our Lake experienced a weather anomaly called a seiche.

Seiche occurs when strong winds force water from one side of a body of water to the other side.

In our case, the wind blew the water out of the western basin leaving very strange happenings, such as lake bottoms revealed, marinas emptied of water, rivers and creeks having water sucked out of them, and reefs being revealed. Over time, the water does rebound, and everything becomes normal again.

The US Army Corp of Engineers has performed a 20-year study to determine the frequency of certain scale seiches. The study found that there is a 1% chance that the seiches will create water level displacements of nearly 6 feet at least once throughout a calendar year.

We have already exceeded those chances, as this event also happened in January 2023.

Now with El Niño finally exiting and La Niña coming in what will our lake experience?
