Senate Passes Budget Bill Along Party Lines

The Senate passed the latest budget plan on a straight party-line vote of 27–23. Senate Bill 160, as reworked by the Senate Rules Committee, essentially reverts to a flat $49.7 billion budget—mirroring last year’s funding level—with a $300 million increase to account for inflation in select programs.

Senate Democrats argued that the measure would still significantly underfund public education, health care, and other critical services. They attempted to restore the bill to the $50.2 billion version previously passed by the House two weeks ago, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Senate Republicans maintained that the revised bill meets key funding needs in a fiscally responsible manner. Democrats, however, urged Republicans to return to the negotiating table to develop a bipartisan budget that can pass the House and be signed by the Governor.

The bill heads back to the House chamber for its consideration. Both chambers are scheduled to return to session next week as the budget impasse continues. We will keep you updated on any new developments.
