SPRING EDITION

NEWSLETTER VOLUME 3 ISSUE 22

Hello Donna,

While reflecting on this Lent, I keep being reminded of Mary and her role in our salvation. On March 25, we celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation. It's hard to comprehend what took place in that brief encounter between Mary and the angel Gabriel, let alone the significance for all of humanity. She was chosen by God the Father to birth His Son Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit! She is the daughter of the Father, mother of the Son and spouse of the Holy Spirit! Wow!!! There is no human being closer to the Trinity than Mary and no one who knows them more intimately. When she speaks to us, it would be wise on our part to listen. She has clearly said "Do whatever He tells you." Jn 2:5

This Lent, maybe we can spend time pondering this directive. Are we doing what our Blessed Mother has asked of us? Are we being obedient to His commandments? In many of the approved apparitions, Mary has instructed us to pray, fast, go to Confession, receive the Eucharist, and read Scripture. Are we listening? The road to heaven is narrow and steep. It probably would be prudent on our part to pay attention to her directions! She knows the way. :-) May the Holy Trinity continue to bless and protect us on our journey.

Wishing you a fruitful Lent and a glorious Easter!

Liturgy of the Hours

From the Catechesis

By Saint John Chrysostom, bishop

The Power of Christ's Blood

If we wish to understand the power of Christ’s blood, we should go back to the ancient account of its prefiguration of Egypt. Sacrifice a lamb without blemish, commanded Moses, and sprinkle its blood on your doors. If we were to ask what he meant, and how the blood of an irrational beast could possibly save men endowed with reason, his answer would be that the saving power lies not in the blood itself, but in the fact that it is a sign of the Lord’s blood. In those days, when the destroying angel saw the blood on the doors he did not dare to enter, so how much less will the devil approach now when he sees, not that figurative blood on the doors, but the true blood on the lips of believers, the doors of the temple of Christ.

If you desire further proof of the power of this blood, remember where it came from, how it ran down from the cross, flowing from the Master’s side. The Gospel records that when Christ was dead, but still hung on the cross, a soldier came and pierced his side with a lance and immediately there poured out water and blood. Now water was a symbol of baptism and the blood of the holy eucharist. The soldier pierced the Lord’s side, he breached the wall of the sacred temple, and I have found the treasure and made it my own. So also with the lamb: the Jews sacrificed the victim and I have been save by it.

There flowed from his side water and blood. Beloved, do not pass over this mystery without thought; it has yet another hidden meaning, which I will explain to you. I said that water and blood symbolized baptism and the holy eucharist. From these two sacraments the Church is born: from baptism, the cleansing water that gives rebirth and renewal through the Holy Spirit, and from the holy eucharist. Since the symbol of baptism and the holy eucharist flowed from his side, it was from his side that Christ fashioned the Church, as he had fashioned Eve from the side of Adam. Moses gives a hint of this when he tells the story of the first man and makes him exclaim: bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh! As God then took a rib from Adam’s side to fashion a woman, so Christ has given us blood and water from his side to fashion the Church. God took the rib when Adam was in a deep sleep, and in the same way Christ gave us the blood and the water after his own death.

Do you understand, then, how Christ has united his bride to himself and what food he gives us all to eat? By one and the same food we are both brought into being and nourished. As a woman nourishes her child with her own blood and milk, so does Christ unceasingly nourish with his own blood those to whom he himself has given life.

RESPONSORY

The price of your redemption was not something of fleeting value like gold or silver, but the costly shedding of the blood of Christ, the lamb without blemish.

– Through him, in the one Spirit, we can approach the Father.

The blood of Jesus Christ washes away all our sins.

– Through him, in the one Spirit, we can approach the Father.

Preparing Our Hearts For Lent

SIEMPRE ADELANTE 2017.jpg
Fr. Patrick Crowley SSCC image 2022.jpg

“The echo of the Lenten-stained ashes speaks the truth of my humanity, the humbleness of my beginning, the simplicity of my departure. A few wise words echoing through Ash Wednesday urge me to deeper things: renewed dedication, constant compassion, and mindful awareness.” (Joyce Rupp – Out of the Ordinary)

One of the beautiful graces in preparing for the Season of Lent is recognizing that I am God's property and possession. “I have called you by name ... you are mine.” (Is. 43:1); “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you ...” (Jeremiah 1:5). In reflecting on the above passages – I am mindful of the words of Archbishop Desmund Tutu: “We are each a God-carrier, a tabernacle of the Holy Spirit, indwelt by God the holy and most blessed Trinity. To treat one, such as less than this, is not just wrong. It is as if we were to spit in the face of God.” How awesome! My response can only be: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord ... God who is mighty has done great things for me, holy is his name.”(Luke 1: 45, 49)

In entering the Lenten Season, I invite Mother Mary to be my guide and companion. She who through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit gave her yes to the Lord, He will likewise, assist me in allowing for something new and fresh to happen in my own life. It may be just a simple yes to be more present to my family and those I love.

In his book, The Violence of Love, St. Oscar Romero writes: “Vatican Council II says that Mary stands out among the poor who await redemption from God. Mary appears in the Bible as the expression of poverty, of humility, of one who needs everything from God. When she comes to America, her intimate, motherly converse is with an Indian, an outcast, a poor man. Mary's dialog in America begins with a sign of poverty, poverty that is hunger for God, poverty that is joy of independence. Poverty is freedom. Poverty is needing others; needing brothers and sisters, supporting one another so as to help one another. This is what Mary means and what the Church means in America.”

These are some of the challenges for me as I prepare my heart for the Lenten Season. Robert F. Morneau in his book of Lenten reflections for 2012 Not By Bread Alone, shares some very useful insights: he states: “Someone once wrote that weak specification is one of the greatest dangers of the Spiritual life. We need to nail things down. We need to be specific regarding time and place if we are serious about our spiritual growth. One Lenten practice might be to take one corporal and one spiritual work of mercy and decide how we will live those two works of mercy over the next forty days.“

Corporal Works of Mercy: Feed the hungry, Give drink to the thirsty, Clothe the naked, Shelter the homeless, Visit the sick, Ransom the captive, Bury the dead. (ibid)

Spiritual Works of Mercy: Instruct the ignorant, Counsel the doubtful, Admonish sinners, Bear wrong patiently, Forgive offenses, Comfort the afflicted, Pray for the living and for the dead. (ibid)

“This rather is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke, sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them and not turning your back on your own.” (Is. 58:6-7)

Morning Star Chapter, Lincoln, Nebraska Steps in Faith

By Rhonda Litt, Coordinator

Morning Star Chapter of Magnificat successfully began our Prayer Meals after the COVID era on November 13, 2021 with Speaker Jenny Hall. Jenny is the Artist for Ablaze Ministries of which Father Michael Voithoffer is the founder and Spiritual Advisor of the Omaha Chapter of Magnificat.

Our next Prayer Meal was also filled to capacity when Father Allan Phan gave his Magnificat at our February 5, 2022 Prayer Meal at the Hillcrest Country Club. Father's testimony was anointed by the Holy Spirit and it was very evident Our Blessed Mother was interceding! Father was born into a non-Christian family, converted to the Catholic faith after High School, and entered the seminary after a year of discernment. He was ordained a priest in 2019. Shortly after Father Phan's ordination, he was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. God in His goodness sent Father a miracle healing and he is now considered cancer free, although he still suffers from many effects of his surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy! His powerful journey with Our Lord has been in just 30 short years! Praise God! His Fiat, like Our Mother Mary's, was one of our most powerful witnesses we have experienced at a Prayer Meal. Pictured is Father Allan Phan with the Morning Star Chapter's Service Team.

Our Blessed Mother and her spouse the Holy Spirit, along with Her Son, Our Lord and King Jesus Christ, have confirmed for Magnificat of Lincoln that They have great plans for our "step in faith" to begin our Prayer Meals again when many other Ministries are still remote or virtual. We thank God for His goodness to His daughters!

After 2 long years we were all so happy to be together again!

On February 5, despite frigid temperatures, we had a great turnout. The room was tight, but the music ministry had everyone engaged! Fr. Justin was a blessing as our speaker to reignite the yearning in our hearts for community.

Mary Kay Schaub.jpg

Welcome Mary Kay Schaub

Region #6 Gets A New Regional Rep

The Central Service Team (CST) is happy to announce that Mary Kay Schaub has accepted the position of Regional Rep for Region 6. This position was previously held by Pat Higginbotham who is now the CST Historian and Liaison to Active Chapters.

Mary Kay became involved with the Buffalo, NY Magnificat Chapter when it started in 1986. She initially joined the Service Team as Historian about 12 years ago, and has served as the Chapter Coordinator for the last 3 years. Mary Kay was baptized in the Holy Spirit in 1973, and was involved with Women's Aglow for many years when her children were small. She is a widow with 5 children, all married (so that makes 10), and just had her 11th grandchild. Praise the Lord! She lives "in the country" and prefers homemaking to anything else, but she did teach in Catholic schools for 26 years and still teaches 2 mornings a week in a homeschool setting.

Mary Kay shares this with us: "I am humbled to act as Regional Representative and covet your prayers. I will do my best in service to Our Lady and Jesus."

We welcome Mary Kay as our Regional Rep to Region 6 and promise our prayers for her.

The Catholic Charismatic Renewal of New Orleans (CCRNO) held their 2022 annual Holy Spirit Women’s Retreat in Lafayette, Louisiana. The theme of the retreat was “Come Away by Yourselves and Rest Awhile (Mark 6:31).

The keynote speaker was Barbara Heil. Barbara was our Magnificat guest speaker at our 2019 International Conference held in New Orleans. She converted to the Catholic Church coming from a life as an Evangelical Preacher. Barbara preached on the power of the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit of God works through us to do the works of God bringing joy, peace and the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. Father Paul Yi of Lafayette shared his testimony and his incredible call to the priesthood. Prayer was said by Father Paul Yi followed by veneration of the First Class Relics of St. Therese with Fr. Paul and Denise Beyer.

Bishop Sam Jacobs preached and taught on walking in love and using the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Bishop Sam reminded us of our call to be prophets by our Baptism. By our Baptism we share in the priesthood of Christ, in his prophetic and royal mission. We act prophetically when we speak the truth, walk in love and live the Gospel by example.

Patti Mansfield shared her love and insights of St. Therese of Lisieux, (the Little Flower). Patti shared how St. Therese’s loving pursuit of holiness was in her everyday life. She was one of the youngest persons to be designated a Doctor of the Church. We all agreed, it was a wonderful getaway and spirit-filled time together praising and worshiping the Lord. Women from Region 3 and 4 attended.

Fr. Sidney Speaks spoke at the Magnificat of Metairie Prayer Breakfast on December 11, 2021, held at the Airport Hilton Hotel.  Fr. Sidney shared his incredible vocation story including all the hills and valleys before accepting an invitation as a parish priest by Archbishop Aymond into the Archdiocese of New Orleans. His first assignment was St. Matthew the Apostle in River Ridge where parishioners welcomed him with opened arms. The parish Cathoic Youth Organization (CYO) was especially touched by Fr. Sidney. They visited him often when he was assigned to St. Joseph the Worker in Marrero. The parish has grown since Fr. Sidney’s arrival necessitating additional Masses to accommodate the increased numbers. Attendees thoroughly enjoyed Fr. Sidney’s talk and gave him a very long standing ovation.

Go where I send thee, how shall I send thee! How about all over the world! Father Calloway responded to a call from Blessed Mother Mary which led him to Palm Desert on Saturday, March 12.

She knew we were dry and needed his grace-filled presence to open our hearts to the truth with his honesty, humor and humility plus!!!

We were honored to have the CST joining us for the Meal. They happened to be in Palm Desert for a planning meeting that same week. They served as Hostesses at the tables and joined the Music Ministry for Praise and Worship.

We had nearly 400 women and men attending the Meal. All were sent home smiling, happy, blessed and filled with hope. Many left with a book in hand of the Consecration to Saint Joseph and a statue.

It was a very powerful Meal indeed. Father Calloway left us wanting more but he was on to his next assignment for souls!

Our Lady of Guadalupe’s Chapter Hosts a February Meal

By Elise Botch, Editor of the CST Newsletter

North County San Diego’s, Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapter had a Meal on Saturday, February 5th, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Hall in Escondido, CA.

The guest speaker was Robin Saunders, a local parishioner who grew up in the East Coast in a very successful family owned hairstylist business that gave them all the luxuries of the world. God was not in the picture, she was a Catholic in name only. As a child in the 80’s, it led Robin to a lifestyle of reckless abandonment in partying, promiscuity, and materialism. Her success brought her to an affluent job in California. To fulfill her mother’s death wish, she was confirmed in the Catholic Church. That experience led to a life of transformation where to this present day she is a wife and mother of six children and involved in many parish ministries.

Mary Carey was honored for her 25 years of service as a member of the North County Service Team. She became the Region 1 Representative this past year and will devote her time in this new role.

Our Music Ministry was led by Lisa Ledyard, one of the members of ‘Living Praise’ accompanied by her daughter, Erica Rigaud and brother, John Telles.

Phoenix Chapter, Mary, Cause of Our Joy December Meal

By Cathy Cato, Asst. Coordinator

Our December 11th Meal went through without a hitch after canceling our two previous Meals. We had 50 wonderful guests and all were happy and prayerful.

We had a terrific speaker, Shannon Clancy, from St. Vincent de Paul. She has an extensive resume in non-profits including the 12 years at St. Vincent de Paul in Phoenix. Shannon has done nearly every job at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Arizona since she started working for the nonprofit in 2002.

Now, as Associate Executive Director, Clancy oversees 246 employees and four departments, including marketing, fundraising, volunteer services and the medical and dental clinics.

The Phoenix native has committed her life to serving the underserved and homeless.

“I’m blessed to work with thousands of volunteers and tremendous staff members who care deeply about this mission and about the people we serve,” Shannon said.

MAGNIFICAT SPIRITUALITY

The new Magnificat Spirituality book brings the principles of Magnificat into one concise volume. Now, we can be informed and instructed in what it truly means to say "yes" to God like Mary and join her in proclaiming His greatness in word and deed through Magnificat membership.

“But the hour is coming, in fact has come, when the vocation of woman is being achieved in its fullness, the hour in which woman acquires in the world an influence, an effect, and a power never hitherto achieved. That is why, at this moment when the human race is undergoing so deep a transformation, women impregnated with the spirit of the Gospel can do much to aid mankind in not falling …”

– Second Vatican Council message to women

"Magnificat Spirituality is a response to this proclamation, echoing in our times, calling us back to personal holiness, community, and service in obedience to the Holy Spirit. The world needs a compelling manifestation of God's love and power to heal broken lives and institutions. With Mary, as our model and greatest intercessor, we believe Magnificat, with Chapters worldwide, has been called and equipped "for such a time as this."

Saint Patrick'"Breastplate" Prayer

I bind unto myself today

The strong Name of the Trinity,

By invocation of the same,

The Three in One and One in Three.

I bind this day to me forever.

By power of faith, Christ's incarnation;

His baptism in the Jordan river;

His death on Cross for my salvation;

His bursting from the spiced tomb;

His riding up the heavenly way;

His coming at the day of doom;

I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself the power

Of the great love of the cherubim;

The sweet 'well done' in judgment hour,

The service of the seraphim,

Confessors' faith, Apostles' word,

The Patriarchs' prayers, the Prophets' scrolls,

All good deeds done unto the Lord,

And purity of virgin souls.

I bind unto myself today

The virtues of the starlit heaven,

The glorious sun's life-giving ray,

The whiteness of the moon at even,

The flashing of the lightning free,

The whirling wind's tempestuous shocks,

The stable earth, the deep salt sea,

Around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today

The power of God to hold and lead,

His eye to watch, His might to stay,

His ear to hearken to my need.

The wisdom of my God to teach,

His hand to guide, His shield to ward,

The word of God to give me speech,

His heavenly host to be my guard.

Against the demon snares of sin,

The vice that gives temptation force,

The natural lusts that war within,

The hostile men that mar my course;

Or few or many, far or nigh,

In every place and in all hours,

Against their fierce hostility,

I bind to me these holy powers.

Against all Satan's spells and wiles,

Against false words of heresy,

Against the knowledge that defiles,

Against the heart's idolatry,

Against the wizard's evil craft,

Against the death wound and the burning,

The choking wave and the poisoned shaft,

Protect me, Christ, till Thy returning.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,

Christ behind me, Christ before me,

Christ beside me, Christ to win me,

Christ to comfort and restore me.

Christ beneath me, Christ above me,

Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,

Christ in hearts of all that love me,

Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,

The strong Name of the Trinity;

By invocation of the same.

The Three in One, and One in Three,

Of Whom all nature hath creation,

Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:

Praise to the Lord of my salvation,

Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

But when you give alms,

do not let your left hand know

what your right hand is doing,

so that your almsgiving may be secret.

And your Father who sees in secret

will repay you. Matthew 6:3-4

I just felt like I need to let y'all know that I truly enjoy participating in the wonderful Magnificat Bible Study Webinar on Zoom.  I am learning so much and I actually look forward to each lesson! I admit that I did hesitate at first but signed up the week the Bible Study began and I am so glad that I did.  It is just perfect for me, especially the fact that I do not have to leave my own comfortable home every Thursday evening. I don't have to dress up or have to sit in a brightly lit freezing room.  Also, each of you has so much insight to add to each lesson, you all are an amazing blessing!
