Construction Starts on Princeton University Environmental Studies and The School of Engineering Applied Science (ES+SEAS)
LERA is the structural engineer for Princeton’s new home for Environmental Studies and the School of Engineering and Applied Science is a 666,000-sf academic complex including five buildings (ES, Commons, BioE, CBE and Theorist Pavilion).

The structural design maximizes the use of mass-timber construction, and aims to minimize the embodied carbon in the project’s concrete structure by specifying carbon sequestration/CO2 injection and recycled Glass Ground Pozzolans as cement substitutions, using modest (rather than high-strength) concrete strengths, and by leaving large amounts of the concrete exposed to absorb CO2 during its life. Additional sustainable design features include green roofs, rooftop solar arrays, efficient MEP systems, stormwater collection and management, high performance curtain wall and optimized daylight.

The Natural History Museum of Utah Receives Award of Excellence in Design by National ASLA
10 years in, still winning! The Natural History Museum of Utah has received the Award of Excellence in Design by the 2021 National ASLA Professional Awards! Congratulations to Ennead Architects and the full project team!
The museum is built on a delicate site on the eastern edge of the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. The 170,000-gsf museum includes gallery space, classrooms, research laboratories and a separate parking structure for 200 cars. With copper façade cladding that covers approximately 42,000 sf of the building’s exterior, the structure blends seamlessly into the surrounding desert landscape. By utilizing concrete made from recycled fly ash, as well as other locally sourced materials, LERA helped the museum to achieve LEED Gold certification.

New NYC Police Memorial
LERA was the structural engineer for a new Police Memorial in New York City Battery Park. The wall honors some of New York's finest. We are honored to have collaborated with Page Southerland Page, Inc. and Battery Park City Authority on the renovation and expansion of the New York City Police Memorial. The revamped memorial is a beautiful and fitting tribute to our city’s fallen heroes.

New Idlewild Park Nature Center
LERA was the structural engineer for a new 5,000-sf nature center located in the Idlewild Park Saltwater Marsh in Queens. Doubling as an educational facility and community center in an area underserved for both, the center will offers exhibit space, offices, classrooms, a small gift shop and a kitchenette.

The overall layout and structure of the building was driven by a “porch” concept: program spaces are located under a singular roof, with an outdoor classroom set back under column supports.

The angled roof channels stormwater run-off into a rain garden that flows into a storm surge channel recently created to mitigate flooding, while the layered, permeable façade, with a lattice of differing densities, was inspired by the principles of filtration—filtering light and air instead of water—and is meant to evoke the surrounding marshland habitat.

Sami Matar, Co-Authors ASCE Manual: Design And Performance of Tall Buildings For Wind
Sami Matar, Associate Partner co-authored ASCE Manual No. 143: Design and Performance of Tall Buildings for Wind.

The publication provides a framework for the design of tall buildings for wind, and presents detailed guidance on industry standard practices and design approaches that complement current literature, model codes, and standards. The performance of tall buildings in wind depends on a combination of wind climate, loading effects, structural system, and damping. MOP 143 provides recommendations on setting and achieving performance objectives, including

• Selection of the wind loading mean recurrence interval (MRI) for serviceability;

• Establishment of performance objectives and acceptance criteria;

• Guidance on modeling building structural properties such as stiffness and damping; and

• Modeling of uncertainties in wind climate, wind loading, and other effects.

MOP 143 will be a valuable resource for structural engineers, wind engineering consultants, architects, and other stakeholders with a vested interest in design of tall buildings.
