MAY 2018
Presidential Address
by Carolina Herrera, P.E.
Our Past President March general meeting was a busy and exciting luncheon. We had the honor of introducing 15 past presidents of our LES Baton Rouge Chapter. We recognized new licensees with our LAPEL representatives, Chris Knotts and Alan Krouse, who helped introduce and congratulate 3 Engineering Interns and 3 Professional Engineers. During this meeting, we awarded two our of seven LEF Scholarships, which was the highest number of scholarships ever awarded for our Chapter region. Congratulations to the deserving students! Our guest speaker for this luncheon was Reed Richards, Assist. Superintendent of System Planning at BREC. He presented an exciting overview of current and future BREC projects. BREC is actively working on creating open spaces for the community to come together and share the outdoors; ranging anywhere from parks, trails and golf courses to community centers, an observatory and a zoo.

We had two outdoor events in the month of April instead of the general monthly membership meetings. We started with a great turnout at the 28th Annual William A. Wintz Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament. The tournament was held at the Copper Mill Golf Course with lunch and other food and cold beverages being served throughout the event. Many thanks to Jacob Loeske, Bert Wintz and Alan Krouse, as well to all the volunteers that make this event happen. Special thanks to PEC, Shread-Kuyrkendall, Quality Sitework Materials, ELOS Environmental and Trinity Lightweight Aggregate who sponsored food and drinks. This is our chapter’s most important event of the year, as it honors the memory of William A Wintz Jr, and the proceeds benefit the chapter’s scholarship fund and LEF.

We also had a great group for our 9th Annual Crawfish Boil at the Patio of Walk-On’s on Burbank. Another opportunity to bring together engineering students and professional engineers to interact and network in a casual setting. This event also served as a membership drive for the LSU student chapter.

Our last membership meeting for this term will be held jointly with the Baton Rouge Chapter of ACEC and ASCE at Juban’s Restaurant on May 24th, as we hear from Chris, Knotts, LADOTD Chief Engineer, on DOTDs Legislative update. Also, don’t miss out on the joint APWA, ASCE, ACEC, LWEA and WTS social at the Bulldog on May 23 (see information below).

As the 2017 - 2018 term comes full circle, I would like to thank the Baton Rouge Chapter officers, corporate sponsors, members, and volunteers for this successful year!
