Principal Message:  August 17, 2017

Dear Parents,

We have had a very busy week at Lovejoy Elementary.   The teachers have been working hard to prepare for this school year. We would like to thank all of the parents for coming to Meet the Teacher on Tuesday night. We enjoyed seeing everyone and having the opportunity to start learning about your child.  I can't wait for Monday to get here so we will officially kick off the 2017 - 2018 school year.  We are eager for the opportunity to nurture your child 's heart and mind with Knowledge, Skills, & Character. Thank you for sharing your child with us. As always, please feel free to e-mail me or call me with any questions or concerns. I hope that you enjoy your weekend!

All My Best,
Wendy Craft

LES News
A unique celestial event will occur on our first day of school - A SOLAR ECLIPSE! The last time a solar eclipse of this magnitude occurred in Texas was February 26, 1979!
For us in Texas, we will not have a total eclipse. Our eclipse will have a 0.8 magnitude and reach its peak at 1:09 pm.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes in front of the Sun fully blocking the Sun. Because our solar eclipse will have a 0.8 magnitude, the Sun will only be partially blocked and will look more like the one in the graphic above. As the eclipse reaches its peak, the temperature will drop and we will experience dusk-like lighting. There have also been reports of animals having strange reactions to the eclipse as it disrupts their normal patterns and rhythm. What an incredible experience it will be for our students!
I know that many of you have several questions about what we will be doing.  Below, I will explain all the precautions that we are taking to provide a safe experience for all students.

Questions about the event:
Will  all students be participating in viewing the eclipse?

Yes, all of our students will be participating in the events.  Each grade level will learn what a solar eclipse is through some hands on activities and videos.  Through this, we will be learning the correct safety precautions that one must take in order to protect their eyes.  Then, students will observe this rare event.

Will  all  students be using the glasses?

Yes, we have ordered glasses for each student and teacher to wear.  Part of our Science standards, is to teach safety.  Our glasses meet the requirement for ISO 12312-2:2015.     We will stress the importance of not taking their glasses off, and in Kindergarten and first grade, we are going to have the students hold their hands by the sides of their faces to help ensure that all glasses are on.

What will the supervision look like during this process?

We will have all extra available staff going outside to assist teachers.  Your child's safety is our number one priority.

Will parents have the option to "opt out" if they do not feel comfortable with their students participating?

Yes, please email your child's teacher so we can accommodate any students who will not be able to go outside.

NEW! Monday's Dropping Off or Escorting Children Into the Building
Children will report directly to their classrooms on Monday.  If pulling along the curb to drop off your child or if parking and walking, please enter through the church parking lot. We are trying this new procedure to help with the congestion on Country Club.  We will have someone stationed at the entrance closest to Lovejoy and the Red Building entrance, directing you to the church parking lot entrance.
Only buses and day car vehicles will be allowed to use the entrance south of Lovejoy Elementary.  Thank you in advance for having patience with us this first week.
NEW! Afternoon Car Rider s
If your child is a car rider, we'll begin taking numbers as soon as we have arrivals.  Again, please enter the church parking lot and make a "S".  The video below shows an example.  Thank you in advance for having patience with us this first week.
Please click here for our video.
NEW! Afternoon Walker Pick Up
Due to the increase in number of parents picking their children up in the library, we will beginning a new procedure. For the safety of our students, we are asking all parents to bring their new "Lovejoy Elementary" car tag with them. Parents will stand outside of the library door, a teacher will greet you, see your number, and then will retrieve your child. We are asking parents to wait outside of the library doors. Thank you for your patience as we try our new procedure.

NEW! Help, I don't have my car tag!
If you did not your car tag at Meet the Teacher, please pick it up on Monday morning when you drop off your child.

NEW!  Respectfully Request No Lunch Guests Week 1

NEW! Character Education Assembly
Get ready for Dennis Lee and his puppet friends! They are back again this year with a brand new show called "Dear Me." As part of our ongoing commitment to instill strong character values in our children, Dennis Lee and his puppets will bring our Six Pillars of Character to life and help us kick off a great school year! Through his engaging presentation with his zany cast of ventriloquist characters, he gently teaches and reminds us to have strength of character and disciplined behavior. The assembly will begin at 1:45 in the gym. We are excited for a new year of growing not only the minds, but also the hearts of our students!
