AUGUST 30, 2018

Dear Parents,

We have had another fantastic week at Lovejoy Elementary. Students are mastering procedures, creating strong relationships with their peers and teachers, and beginning their learning journey.  As a reminder, if your child is going to be absent, please email Sondra Payne at . We would prefer an email instead of a phone call. This helps us with our records that we are required to keep.
In May, Mrs. Dawson, challenged our students to read 1,000 books, and if we reach the goal, then I will go up in an hot air balloon on Friday, September 7th! We need your help to send me up in a Hot Air Balloon. We have almost reached our goal! You can log your child's books by clicking here . If you have any questions regarding this, please contact Kristin Dawson at . Parents are more than welcome to come and watch the big event with their child next Friday morning at 8:00. We will send an email next week with more details.
I hope that you have a happy and safe three day weekend. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

All My Best,
Wendy Craft

Growth Mindset
As part of our commitment to developing the whole child, we will be continuing our focus on monthly Leopard Life Skills to enhance our character education program. Our Leopard Life Skills are based on character strengths promoted by a company called Character Lab. Character Lab is a non-profit organization that has identified specific character qualities that can help our students live healthy, successful, and fulfilling lives. The character strengths are instrumental in helping our kids develop three main character strengths: strength of heart, strength of mind, and strength of will. Strengths of heart are "helping" strengths that help you relate in positive ways to other people. Strengths of mind are the "thinking" strengths that enable a fertile and independent life of the mind. Strengths of will are the "doing" strengths that help you achieve your goals. Altogether, we refer to these character strengths as "Leopard Life Skills" since they encompass skill sets that are predictive of current and future life success.
The first Leopard Life Skill for the month of September will be "Growth Mindset." Students will learn that having a growth mindset means understanding that intelligence can be developed. We want our leopards to learn that they can get smarter through hard work and practice, and that struggling with something is an opportunity for them to grow their intelligence. The key word we will use with students to underscore this skill is the word "yet." They may not be able to do something right now, but that doesn't mean they can't or won't ever be able to . . . they just don't know how to do it yet . While we will be teaching and practicing the Leopard Life Skills here at school, it would be beneficial to reinforce them at home as well. Please enjoy identifying real life examples of how these skills can help them tackle life's challenges. If you would like to know more about the character strengths and the Character Lab organization, you can visit their website at . You can also contact me at any time. Thank you for your ongoing support in growing heart strong leopard leaders! Mrs. Ruggeri ☺

Lovejoy Senior Requests Assistance with Senior Project
A message from Lovejoy Senior, Alexandra Brungardt:

"As an incoming senior, I have selected a project that is close to my heart. There is a "Toy Closet" at the Cancer Hospital from which patients can choose an item to help during their stay. I want to stock the Closet with as many toys as possible.  In order to purchase toys for the closet, donation bins will be placed at each of the schools and the red building. These bins will be collecting gently used Lovejoy Spirit Wear. Once collected, the spirit wear will be sold and the money used to buy Toys for the Closet. The toys will be donated in memory of Walker Jack Rainey. I can be reached at with any comments or questions. Thank you for your generosity."
