Researchers conduct country's first comprehensive study of 'laughing gas' deaths
Nitrous oxide deaths in the United States spiked by more than 500% between 2010 and 2023, a new study indicates. Andrew Yockey, University of Mississippi assistant professor of public health, and Rachel Hoopsick, assistant professor of health and kinesiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, completed a first-of-its-kind study of nitrous oxide-related fatalities. The researchers published their findings in JAMA Network Open. Read more

Heart health tied not just to habits, but to access and opportunity, study finds
A team of researchers led by two University of Mississippi professors is working to unlock patterns and causes of the No. 1 killer of Mississippians: heart disease. Ole Miss professors analyzed data from 418 counties in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina. They used mapping and statistical methods to test hypotheses, explore patterns in heart disease rates, and identify key social and structural factors linked to those patterns. Read more here

GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi has been named a 2025 grant recipient from the Nissan Foundation. The Nissan Foundation grant will help support the Museum’s ongoing Exploring the Soul of the Movement education program, which seeks to address the need to build a foundation of historical context among today’s youth, using music to help them better address and analyze the critical social issues we are still facing today. The Nissan Foundation supports educational programs that promote a greater appreciation and understanding of America’s diverse cultural heritage. Read more
