Gearing Up for the Lift For Life Academy 14th Annual Fashion Showcase!
|
Fashion students are working diligently on their designs for the upcoming showcase on April 7th at the Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. Led by their fashion teachers, and LFLA alumni, Nicole Alston (Class of ‘15), Antonia Jones (Class of ‘18), and Jazmyne Coleman (Class of ‘18), the 25 students slated to walk the runway in just 2 short weeks are putting the final touches to their designs.
Jordan F. is a 12th grade student in Fashion IV who is no stranger to the runway after starring in last year’s show. “My favorite part is the whole experience of being on the runway and being celebrated,” Jordan said as she sewed the bodice for one of her two looks in this year’s show. Across the room, Tatyana J., 12th grade, prepares her look for her first ever time walking the runway. Tatyana said, “I’m not nervous, I’m really excited to experience the show and be up on the runway in my designs.”
The showcase will feature more than just fashion. This year, students from the Ceramics, Photography, and Woodworking classes, 1904coders, and more will display their astonishing creations for all in attendance to view and have the chance to purchase to take home. Students on the Chess Team will be showing off their impressive skills for attendees as well.
|
We are close to being sold out for this incredible annual fundraising event. If you would like to support the Fashion Showcase and LFLA students, please consider making an online donation using the link below. All proceeds go directly to the Investing in Student Success programs that enhance the academic experience for all students.
Students in Mrs. Karen Elias’s third grade class are learning about Apollo 11’s mission to the moon. Students are reading Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11 by Brian Floca, which tells the story of Apollo 11. Throughout their reading, students are analyzing the pictures and illustrations, while discussing how those images can help relay the story for all readers and provide more interesting information.

Action Research Projects
World Literature Exhibition
| | |
|
High school students in Mrs. Sara Redel’s World Literature classes read the memoir A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, the author's memoir about serving as a child soldier in the Sierra Leone Civil War and his rehabilitation from being a child soldier.
Throughout the book, students examined systems of exploitation that impact their own lives; social issues in the community that people have grown desensitized to; the impacts of trauma on mental health; and how they can heal from community and personal trauma.
Students created their own research questions around these themes and spent two months creating an Action Research Project that involved collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data from the LFLA school community and analyzing their results to propose solutions.
|
Mrs. Redel said: “I didn't have experience doing this kind of action research until I was in grad school, so it has been amazing to see students of all levels and abilities participate in this real-life method of conducting research.”
|
Students presented the final results of their projects to their fellow students, teachers, and volunteers during two presentation sessions on March 6.

A Visit to
Millipore Sigma
Eighth grade scholars toured the facilities at MilliporeSigma on March 4. During their trip, they learned about the cost of running a lab, the subjects studied, and how the lab contributed to COVID research. Students had the opportunity to ask people in the labs questions about working in the STEM field.
| |
Students also explored the Curiosity Cube of Millipore Sigma, where they learned about sustainable clothing, including how technology can transform plastic waste into fabric, and how renewable energy, like wind power, is used in the textile industry. Finally, students participated in a lab where they learned about pollution caused by dyes in our clothes and made sustainable dye alternatives using turmeric and tea leaves.
