Little Falls Village Beginnings -
In 2010, Dave read about a group of residents in Boston’s Beacon Hill area who wanted to “Age in Place” and avoid Assisted Care facilities. They had created an organization of neighbors who would help each other with daily tasks and provide social events. The Beacon Hill group, which called itself a Village, inspired a national movement. The idea electrified Dave. “This,” he said, “is exactly what our community needs.” And so began Little Falls Village (LFV). The name connected us to both our area and the national movement. The challenge was how to attract members to an idea that was only beginning to take root.
In early 2011, Dave created a one-page handout with information about Villages and distributed copies to nearby apartments and houses and local stores. We created a phone network to spread Dave’s ideas and talked with everyone we could. By the summer, we decided it was time to discover how much enthusiasm the idea had generated.
In the late fall of 2011, we held an evening meeting in the gymnasium of the Waldorf School on Sangamore Road in Bethesda. When I say we, I mean Dave, Puckie and a few others who had shown real interest. That meeting was truly astonishing. 120 people showed up, out of curiosity to discover what would happen. They had questions, ideas, enthusiasm, and the interest to join a group with no organization, no structure, no calendar, and no money.
In early 2012, Dave received a phone call from Todd Smith, an engaging, thoughtful man who was eager to be part of the team to bring Little Falls Village to life. The two met at the Sumner Place Starbucks early in 2012, and again later that Spring. Dave was excited. “We have our first Executive Director and he’s a winner.” Indeed he was. Todd knew how to make people happy, and he also recognized the problems inherent to aging and how to deal with these issues. While Dave and a handful of others worked to develop the structure, by-laws and finances, Todd made sure that LFV developed a group of engaged members and volunteers, along with a calendar of events which appealed to the diverse membership.
In July 2013, Little Falls Village held its first event, a cocktail party with wine, beer, delicious food, and a gathering of people delighted to get to know each other. Together, Todd and Dave cut a blue ribbon, strung across a wide doorway. Little Falls Village was open for business. In July 2013, the Village had roughly 20 members; as of January 2021, it has a group of dedicated volunteers, and a membership of more than 145!

Wednesday 1/27: Protocol, The Power of Diplomacy and How to Make it Work for You with Ambassador Capricia Marshall who serves as Ambassador-in-Residence at the Atlantic Council in Washington, DC. Ambassador Marshall is President of Global Engagement Strategies, which advises international public and private clients on issues relating to the nexus of business and cultural diplomacy. In her roles as chief of protocol for President Obama and social secretary to President Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton, Capricia Penavic Marshall guided the critical work of building diplomatic bridging, using the tools of protocol to tilt the playing field in the direction of her principals. From staging a room to have an intended effect on the participants to knowing which cultural gestures earn trust, her behind-the-scenes preparations and hidden influencers set the stage for successful diplomacy between heads of state around the world. What over two decades of working at the highest levels of government taught Marshall: There’s power in detail and nuance. Micro-moves affect the macro shifts. Sharing unvarnished examples from her time in office — harrowing near-misses, exhilarating triumphs, heart-warming personal stories — Marshall will bring a master class on soft power, unveiling the complexity of human interactions and making the case that etiquette, cultural IQ, and a flexible mindset matter—now more than ever.

Wednesday 2/24: A Lab of One’s Own: One Woman’s Personal Journey Through Sexism in Science presented by Dr. Rita Colwell. Dr. Colwell is one of America's top scientists and the groundbreaking microbiologist who discovered how cholera survives between epidemics. She is the former head of the National Science Foundation.
A Lab of One's Own is a riveting memoir-manifest, documenting all Colwell has experienced during the past six decades in science, from sexual harassment in the lab to obscure systems blocking women from leading professional organizations or publishing their work. Along the way, she encountered other women pushing back against the status quo, including a group at MIT who revolt when they discover their labs are a fraction of the size of their male colleagues. Resistance gave female scientists special gifts: forced to change specialties so many times, they came to see things in a more interdisciplinary way, which turned out to be key to making new discoveries in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Colwell would also witness the advances that could be made when men and women worked together--often under her direction, such as when she headed a team that helped to uncover the source of the anthrax used in the 2001 letter attacks.
A Lab of One's Own shares the sheer joy a scientist feels when moving toward a breakthrough and the thrill of uncovering a whole new generation of female pioneers. But it is also the science book for the #MeToo era, offering an astute diagnosis of how to fix the problem of sexism in science--and a celebration of the women who fought back.

The National Portrait Gallery's America's Presidents exhibition is part of its permanent collection and is the nation's only complete collection of presidential portraiture outside the White House. The National Portrait Gallery docent will discuss how portraiture changes over time from classical to contemporary style paintings, demonstrating the depth and breadth of the Portrait Gallery's collection. Discussions of what artists are included in presidential portraits, how each president is represented, and the differences in style and size of portraits make for an interesting and compelling conversation.

Tuesday 2/16 2:00 - 3:15 PM Florentine and Venetian Renaissance Art. The Renaissance was a time of great socio-economic, political, and cultural change which radically influenced the development of Western art. The rise of classicism, humanism and scientific inquiry brought new approaches to artistic imagery that we will see in the works of Italian masters such as Leonardo, Raphael, Titian, and their predecessors. This special tour will be given by Estelle Quain, a docent at the National Gallery of Art and FHNN member.

Friday 2/19 1:00-2:00 PM Hokusai: Mad About Painting. We had one docent tour in July for the First Installation. With this tour, docent Christine Freidel will show us additional work from the museum's 2nd installation. The Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is widely recognized for a single image—Great Wave Off the Coast of Kanagawa, an icon of global art—yet he produced thousands of works throughout his long life. Come view the exhibition Hokusai: Mad About Painting, which features works from the world’s largest collection of paintings, sketches, and drawings by Hokusai. Works large and small are on view, from six-panel folding screens and hanging scrolls to paintings and drawings. Together, these works reveal an artistic genius who thought he might finally achieve true mastery in painting—if he lived to the age of 110.
This docent-led tour is through the National Museum of Asian Art (Freer/Sacker Galleries). The docent will have access to high resolution slides and a digital resource base. We can provide comments and questions to the docent prior to the tour, so that it is focused on the interests of our group. Group size is limited to 30 people!

Thursday 3/11: The Prescription Drug Pricing Problem with Bill Corr, former Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.
The average per capita spending on prescription drugs in the U.S. is $1000 and rising, while in other developed countries it is $600. Health Affairs points out: “To avoid reporting lower revenue and profits (due to the loss of patent protection on older drugs), drug manufacturers have been imposing large annual price increases, often 10 percent or more, on all drugs that remain protected by monopolies. The cumulative effect has been to double or triple the price of top-selling branded drugs such as Humira, Lyrica, Lantus, and many others. That is why US drug prices are the highest in the world.”
Bill Corr, along with former Rep. Henry Waxman, has co-authored a major study of the problem of skyrocketing prescription drug prices and what can be done about it, which he will discuss.

Wednesday 3/24: “"Who Shall Live and Whom Should We Let Die: COVID-19’s Ethical Landscape” with Dr. Mildred Solomon, President of the Hastings Center on Bioethics.
Historically, pandemics raise a set of excruciatingly difficult ethical and moral questions. How should we allocate scarce resources like lifesaving ventilators, protective equipment or vaccines? Should the young be prioritized over the old? As we aim at creating new therapeutics and vaccines quickly, what are acceptable trade-offs between speed and safety? What is the proper balance between civil liberties and public health e.g. requiring a quarantine? What should we do about the fact that in the COVID-19 pandemic, African Americans are dying at three times the rate of white Americans?
To help us discuss these issues, Dr. Mildred Solomon, the president of the nation’s founding bioethics research institute in New York, and Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, will describe COVID-19’s ethical landscape. She will raise for discussion the major ethical issues we must resolve to bring the pandemic under control and will help us think about how we might rebuild our society.

Natural and staged, these images explore themes of memory, loss, and exile, but also of defiance and hope. Friday, 3/19 1:00-2:00 pm. Forces of Nature: Renwick Invitational, 2020.
Invited artists approach the long history of art’s engagement with the natural world through unconventional and highly personal perspectives. The Renwick Invitational 2020 features artists Lauren Fensterstock, Timothy Horn, Debora Moore, and Rowland Ricketts. Nature provides a way for these invited artists to ask what it means to be human in a world increasingly chaotic and divorced from our physical landscape. Representing craft media from fiber to mosaic to glass and metals, these artists approach the long history of art’s engagement with the natural world through unconventional and highly personal perspectives. The Forces of Nature: Renwick Invitational 2020 is the ninth installment of the Renwick Invitational. Established in 2000, this biennial showcase highlights midcareer and emerging makers who are deserving of wider national recognition. This docent-led Zoom tour is through the Smithsonian American Art Museum / Renwick.

Friday 5/14 1:00-2:00 PM. Meeting Tessai. Tomioka Tessai is a prime example of a modern Japanese painter. Contemporaries praised his works as being exceptionally modern, and they recognized parallels between Tessai’s work and European postimpressionism. Paintings by Tomioka Tessai (1836–1924) were so esteemed that he was one of the first Japanese artists to have his works shown in the United States—in an exhibition organized by the Smithsonian—following World War II. Decades before that, museum founder Charles Lang Freer met with Tessai three times in June 1907 while the American collector was in Kyoto. Sackler Gallery.

YOU ARE INVITED TO A
VILLAGE INAUGURAL BALL
WEDNESDAY JANUARY 20
6—8 pm
Since most of us won't be able to make it downtown to attend the Presidential Inaugural Ball, we'll hold our own on Wednesday January 20 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Prepare a snack, pour a beverage, and enjoy great conversations with old and new friends.
|
Attendees will enjoy dance hits from every election year since 1960. If you’re planning to stay seated behind your Zoom screen, you only need to dress up the top half of your body, and can still wear your pajama bottoms!
This event is sponsored by Silver Spring Village.
