Thursday, October 14 Four Strategies for Living a Nourished Life with Carla Johnston, DCN, MA, MS, CNS, LDN. When we hear the word Nutrition, we may think of what is on the plate. When we hear the word Nourishment, we can think about what is on life’s plate.
Nutrition is certainly an important key to health, and for me, the conversation goes beyond food choices. When creating our health and wellness goals, especially as we continue to age, it is important to consider all influences that could impact our ability to adapt and shift. Life brings change, and we often need to adapt our plans accordingly. In this presentation, we will focus on four strategies that allow us to live a Nourished Life!
Dr. Carla Johnston is a licensed and board-certified nutritionist in Maryland who recently completed her doctorate in clinical nutrition. She currently holds an M.S. in Herbal Medicine from the Maryland University of Integrative Health, along with an M.A. in Applied Sociology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where she focused on the impact of chronic illness on aging adults. Dr. Johnston is a clinical practitioner who is a passionate advocate for aging adults seeking to incorporate health positive behaviors; partnering with those seeking to live their best lives. She is also the Associate Director of Community Outreach and Partnerships at Maryland University of Integrative Health.

Wednesday, October 27 Complementary Health Practices: An Overview with Carla Johnston, DCN, MA, MS, CNS, LDN. Traditional medicine allows us to incorporate wisdom from many cultures and centuries of practice. Contemporary medicine allows us to examine the evidence, the clinical applications of traditional medicine. For example, CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) has now been replaced with Integrative Medicine and Health. This shift illustrates the importance for each of us to be an active participant in our health and wellness care.
By incorporating both, we tap into our innate wisdom and allow us to tap into the wisdom that ultimately supports our body, mind, and soul. It proves to be beneficial for those seeking health goals as well as for those who are currently experiencing health challenges.

Friday, October 8, 1:00 – 2:00 pm. ZOOM: Cranach to Canaletto: Masterpieces from the Bemberg Foundation, a docent-led Zoom tour from the San Diego Museum of Art. Tour a selection of stunning Old Master paintings from the more than seventy-five works presented. These works, exemplifying themes of portraiture, landscape, mythology, and domestic environments (which is subdivided into “Outdoor Pursuits” and “Interiors and Intrigue”), reflect the unique personal taste of the connoisseur who assembled this remarkable private collection, Georges Bemberg.
Built by Argentina-born French collector and Harvard-trained scholar, Georges Bemberg, the collection ranges from Venetian portraits and view paintings to masterworks of the German and French Renaissance. Organized by the Bemberg Foundation, based at the historic Hôtel d’Assézat in Toulouse, the exhibition features over 75 works produced between about 1500 and 1800. Artists represented in the Foundation’s collection include the Venetian painters Tintoretto, Titian, Veronese, Canaletto, Tiepolo and Longhi; French artists Clouet, Nattier, Boucher, and Vigée-Lebrun; and Flemish and Dutch painters Brueghel, Van Goyen, and Van Dyck. Five Lucas Cranach paintings attest to Bemberg’s appreciation of this seminal figure of the German Renaissance.

PLEASE NOTE: Fallingwater, originally scheduled for October 18th, will be planned for early May. More details to follow.
Day Trip to Fallingwater. Frank Lloyd Wright’s design of Fallingwater in 1935 was inspired by nature’s forms and principles, where materials, colors and design motifs were all derived from the natural features of the woodland site where it was built. Fallingwater best exemplifies Wright’s philosophy of organic architecture: the harmonious union of art and nature. In 2019 UNESCO inscribed Fallingwater, and seven other Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings, marking the first modern architecture designation on the UNESCO World Heritage List in the United States.

Thursday, November 4 How Fashion Survived WWII in Paris, London and New York with Elizabeth Lay, Design Historian, Curator, and Professor at GWU.
Fashion changed very little during WWII as scarcity defined each designers’ style. Behind wide shoulders and fitted suits, the apparel industry struggled to survive. The war’s impact reached beyond the industry itself as fashion houses and the supporting crafts employed thousands of people and accounted for a significant portion of each country’s GDP. Individually the Allied design centers faced different challenges: Paris was occupied by the Nazis, London sustained relentless bombing raids, and New York was hungry for fashion which some hoped the American would supplant the French. The talk will examine the war time conditions and how each center endured and ultimately flourished through creativity, innovation, and celebration.
Elizabeth Lay is a Design Historian and the Curator at Montgomery History’s Beall Dawson House and Stonestreet Museum in Rockville. She holds a Master’s degree in the History of Decorative Arts from the Smithsonian-GMU program in Design History, specializing in 20th century textiles, fashion, and women designers. Additionally, Elizabeth Lay is an Adjunct Professor at George Washington University teaching Women Designers of the Twentieth Century and 20th Century Costume.

Craig Whitlock joins us to discuss his reportorial triumph, The Afghanistan Papers: A Secret History of the War. After conducting thousands of interviews and suing the government for emails and other documents under the Freedom of Information Act, his book tells the story of strategic bungling, distorted statistics, a nation-building project doomed to failure and the victory of drugs and corruption in the longest war in American history through the voices of those who knew that the US government was presenting a distorted, and sometimes entirely fabricated, version of the facts on the ground.
Just as the Pentagon Papers changed the public’s understanding of Vietnam, The Afghanistan Papers contains startling revelation after revelation from people who played a direct role in the war, from leaders in the White House and the Pentagon to soldiers and aid workers on the front lines. In unvarnished language, they admit that the US government’s strategies were a mess, that the nation-building project was a colossal failure, and that drugs and corruption gained a stranglehold over their allies in the Afghan government.
Craig Whitlock has covered the global war on terrorism since 2001. He specializes in national security issues and has covered the Pentagon, served as the Berlin bureau chief and reported from more than 60 countries. He joined The Washington Post in 1998. Craig received the George Polk Award for Military Reporting, the Scripps Howard Award for Investigative Reporting, the Investigative Reporters and Editors Freedom of Information Award and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for international reporting.

Friday, November 12 10:30 – 11:30 am. ZOOM: Medieval Bologna: Art for a University City. Docent-led tour from the Frist Museum. This is the first museum exhibition in the United States to focus on medieval art made in the northern Italian city of Bologna. Home to the oldest university in Europe, Bologna fostered a unique artistic culture at the end of the Middle Ages. With its large population of sophisticated readers, the city became the preeminent center of manuscript production south of the Alps and it helped bring about a revolution in the medieval book trade. The university initially specialized in law, and many law books were illuminated in Bologna with brightly colored scenes. University professors enjoyed high social status and were buried in impressive stone tombs carved with classroom scenes. The nearly 70 objects in the exhibition span from the mid-1200s to 1400, from the first great flowering of manuscript illumination in Bologna to the beginnings of the construction and decoration of the ambitious Basilica of San Petronio in the city’s Piazza Maggiore. Paintings and sculptures as well as manuscripts will be on view. Lenders include the J. Paul Getty Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Morgan Library & Museum, and the National Gallery of Art.

Friday, November 19 The Automobile IS American Art, a docent-led tour with Betsy Hannigan from The Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Americans love their cars. The super fast ones, the shiny red ones, the convertible top ones, the vintage ones, the loud ones, and of course the ones that simply get us to the grocery store. They often evoke memories of good times, new found freedoms, exciting adventures, and milestones in our lives.
Albert H. Small loved cars too. While best known as a real estate developer in the Washington DC area, he was also a collector of many things, among them, model cars. Mr. Small recently gifted his vast model car collection to the Smithsonian American Art Museum where you can see over 100 of them on display in the exhibit called The Automobile and American Art.
Join us on a virtual tour of this exhibit, learn about Mr. Small and his collection, and then we will cruise through the SAAM galleries to find cars and car inspiration in other works of art. We will find a quiet place to park and talk about cars as works of art - sculptural works of fine art. We can talk about design, how does the car make the viewer (or driver) feel, materials used, the sometimes outrageous costs, collecting and collectors, and more. Then it is your turn. Bet you have a car story. One you owned, one you wish you still owned, a trip you took, something custom you did to your car.

Wednesday, December 15 The Sirens of Mars: Searching for Life on Another World with Sarah Stewart Johnson, Provost’s Distinguished Associate Professor, Johnson Biosignatures Lab, Department of Biology Science, Technology, and International Affairs Program, Georgetown University.
Mars was once similar to Earth, but today there are no rivers, no lakes, no oceans. Coated in red dust, the terrain is bewilderingly empty. And yet multiple spacecraft are circling Mars, sweeping over Terra Sabaea, Syrtis Major, the dunes of Elysium, and Mare Sirenum—on the brink, perhaps, of a staggering find, one that would inspire humankind as much as any discovery in the history of modern science. In this book talk, Georgetown scientist Sarah Stewart Johnson will tell the story of how she and other researchers have scoured Mars for signs of life, transforming the planet from a distant point of light into a world of its own.
Sarah Stewart Johnson grew up in Kentucky before becoming a planetary scientist. She now runs a research lab as a professor at Georgetown University and works on NASA missions. Her writing has appeared in the New Yorker, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Harvard Review, and the Best American Science and Nature Writing. Her first book, The Sirens of Mars: Searching for Life on Another World, was selected as one of The New York Times's 100 Notable Books of 2020, and in 2021, she received the Whiting Award for Nonfiction, the largest US literary award for emerging writers.

Friday, December 3 In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, a docent-led tour from The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Costume Institute's In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, launches a two-part exploration of fashion in the United States in the Anna Wintour Costume Center. It establishes a modern vocabulary of American fashion based on its expressive qualities.
Smaller in scale than Part Two, this portion of the exhibition uses the organizing principle of a patchwork quilt. A signature quilt begun in 1856 from The Met's American Wing collection opens the show, and serves as a metaphor for the United States and its varied cultural identities.
Approximately 100 men's and women's ensembles by a diverse range of designers from the 1940s to the present are featured. Enclosed in scrimmed cases that represent three-dimensional "patches" of a quilt, they are organized into 12 sections that explore defining emotional qualities: Nostalgia, Belonging, Delight, Joy, Wonder, Affinity, Confidence, Strength, Desire, Assurance, Comfort, and Consciousness.

Friday, December 10, 10:30 – 11:30 am. ZOOM: Love Stories from the National Portrait Gallery, London with a docent from the Worcester Art Museum.
This pioneering exhibition will present masterpieces from the Collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, in an innovative exploration of love's role in the creation of some of the greatest masterpieces of Western art by artists such as Sir Joshua Reynolds, Angelica Kauffmann, David Hockney, Lee Miller, and Sam Taylor-Johnson, among others.
At the heart of this exhibition is a series of real-life love stories, captured through the likenesses of sitters—from the 16th-century to storied couples like David and Victoria Beckham, Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, and John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Each of the love stories sheds light on a different aspect of romantic love and the role of portraits within it through images which capture artists' obsessions with their muses to those that record tragic love affairs or celebrate the triumph of love against the odds.

Thursday 1/13/22 Will This Pandemic Ever End? – An Epidemiologist’s Prognosis for the Future with George W. Rutherford, M.D.
George W. Rutherford, M.D., renowned epidemiologist at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), will provide an update on the current state of COVID-19, focusing specifically on the delta variant, implications for children under the age of 12, what the rise of this highly infectious variant means for vaccinated and unvaccinated adults and adolescents, and what it will take to move past this surge and end the pandemic.
Dr. Rutherford is Professor of Epidemiology, Preventive Medicine, Pediatrics and History and Head of the Division of Infectious Disease and Global Epidemiology in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UCSF. He also directs the Global Strategic Information program within UCSF’s Institute for Global Health Sciences and the residency program in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health.
His work has focused primarily on the epidemiology and control of communicable diseases, both domestically and internationally. He has held a number of positions in public health agencies, including serving as State Health Officer and State Epidemiologist for California. His academic interest has been in HIV and other infectious diseases in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Eastern Europe.
Dr. Rutherford is an advisor to the World Health Organization, the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV and AIDS and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, is the past chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Epidemiology and was the first Chair of the Department of Veterans Affairs Research Advisory Council. He has been intimately involved in UCSF’s, San Francisco’s and California’s responses to the COVID-19 pandemic since the earliest days and is leading a major cohort study with Stanford on the epidemiology and prevention of SARS-CoV-2 in the Bay Area.
Educated at Stanford University and Duke University School of Medicine, he has degrees in the Classics, Chemistry, History and Medicine. He is board certified in pediatrics and in general preventive medicine and public health.
This event is brought to you by the Council of Former Federal Executives & Associates (COFFE).

Wednesday 1/26/22 Finding Meaning and Success: Living a Fulfilled and Productive Life with Chris Palmer. Author, speaker, wildlife filmmaker, grandfather, and retired professor, Chris Palmer will give an entertaining presentation on how to improve your life. He serves on the Board of Montgomery Hospice and is currently writing a book on aging, death, and dying. Chris also runs an “aging well” group for the Bethesda Metro Area Village. During his filmmaking career, he swam with dolphins and whales, came face-to-face with sharks and Kodiak bears, camped with wolf packs, and waded hip-deep through Everglade swamps.
|
You will be inspired by his new book, Finding Meaning and Success: Living a Fulfilled and Productive Life, as he explores the goals, strategies, and tactics necessary to live a successful, fulfilled, and productive life. Instead of allowing our lives to drift forward and react to what happens to us, Chris Palmer will discuss how to actively design our lives as we consider what actually matters and how we can take better care of ourselves in order to behave in ways true to our most honorable, generous, and best selves.

Wednesday 2/23/22 Auditory Learning & the Effects of Hearing Loss on the Brain with Dan Sanes and Beverly Wright. More information will be provided later.
|
Dr. Dan Sanes is Professor in the Center for Neural Science and Department of Biology at New York University. He is a leading researcher in the study of hearing loss during development. His studies have shown how early hearing loss affects brain development and how the developmental deficits, caused by deafness, might be reversed.
|
Beverly Wright, is Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and Director of the Hugh Knowles Center, Northwestern University School of Communication. Wright and her students explore the general principles of auditory learning, a process that leads to improvements in perceptual skills. Her research also focusses on how learning changes with age, sensory experience (hearing loss), and cognitive background (e.g., language and reading disorders). Research on perceptual learning may lead to more effective training strategies for enhancing normal perceptual capacities and treating perceptual disorders.

Leon Bakst’s Grand Finale: The Ballets Russes’ Sleeping Princess
Production of 1921
An online lecture by Anna Winestein
Leon Bakst is unquestionably the iconic scenographer of the Ballets Russes, having designed more productions than anyone else, and contributed critically to the company’s early success and enduring legacy. His last production for Sergei Diaghilev, the 1921 London staging of Petipa’s 1890 classic ballet, was both the grandest (described as ‘outsplendouring splendour’) and the most catastrophic (a ‘gorgeous calamity’ that plunged the company into crippling debt and ruined the designer’s relationship with the impresario). This talk tells the story of a remarkable theatrical endeavor whose legacy continues to be re-evaluated to this day.

Saturday, December 11 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm EST. FREE.
Alexis in America: A Russian Grand Duke’s Tour
An online lecture by Professor Lee A. Farrow.
In the autumn of 1871, Alexis Romanov, the fourth son of Tsar Alexander II of Russia, set sail from his homeland for an extended journey through the United States and Canada. This journey was a major milestone in US and Russian relations. As the first visit of a Russian royal to America, it spurred public interest, rumors, and cultural exchange.
This presentation will recount the Grand Duke’s progress through major American cities, detailing his meetings with figures such as Jefferson Davis, Albert Bierstadt, Samuel Morse and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and describing the national self-reflection that his presence spurred in the American people.
While the enthusiastic American media breathlessly reported every detail of his itinerary and entourage, Alexis visited Niagara Falls, participated in a bison hunt with George Armstrong Custer and Buffalo Bill Cody, and attended the Krewe of Rex’s first Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans.
Lee Farrow joins her examination of these cultural underpinnings to a lively narrative of the Grand Duke’s tour, creating an engaging record of a unique moment in Russian-American relations.
