LFV Member and Volunteer Outings Have Resumed!
Our Season's FIRST Outing was a Guided Tour of DC Monuments

|
A few of the notes we've received:
|
|
Jim, You made our visit to the Eisenhower, Disabled Veterans and Native American Memorials very memorable. Your depth of knowledge, not only about the museums, but many other interesting facts about Washington, D.C. is remarkable. And your "behind the scenes" tidbits made the history come alive. Thank you for sharing.- LC & SC
It was a great day...Jim was great - informative, clear, humorous, fun, personable.- JN

Lisa, Thanks for all your excellent organizing for this lunch/brunch on the 22nd. Enjoyed this morning’s [meditation] Zoom session as well...
I do not think there is any Village group as good as the LFV . . . SD

Hello Lisa, What a terrific ending of the week. I thoroughly enjoyed the lecture by Pat and her trusty assistant [with the Minneapolis Institute of Art] It seems like a versatile and interesting museum. Maybe we will be able to visit sometime in the future. Until then I will satisfy that desire via the internet. Aren't we lucky with all that is available to us electronically?? Thanks again for the fabulous programs LFV keeps coming up with! - JS

We are so excited to re-start LFV in-person services, outings & events, safely and consistent with CDC, state and county guidelines. Throughout the long pandemic year and currently, LFV volunteers provide many vital services to our members including transportation, grocery shopping, errands, tech support, check-in calls and four COVID vaccine clinics! The Advisory Team volunteers bring fresh ideas to the expansion and evolution of LFV.
In June, we re-started in-person services and events. Our first outing was an amazing tour of DC monuments with fabulous tour guide Jim Carr and 20 LFVers! Followed by Lunch Bunch & Bridge, and soon to be followed by Men's Lunch, Glenstone & Hillwood Garden visits, a boat tour of the Anacostia River, Monuments by Moonlight bus tour, Windridge Vineyard and a day trip to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. LFV's popular zoom museum docent tours continue to expand to out-of-town museums, including museums in Nashville, New York City, Fort Worth, and the Boston area. Zoom is easier than flying there! Our well-attended speaker series continues through zoom until further notice, conveniently brought right to your computer screen.
The resilience of LFV Members & the generosity & kindness of LFV Volunteers are an inspiration to all - THANK YOU!
Check out LFV programs and events in this Doings Newsletter and remember that the LFV calendar is also found on our website www.littlfallsvillage.org
I look forward to seeing you all soon! - Lisa

Wednesday 7/7 The Beauty and Science of the Magnolia Family with Edward M. Barrows, Professor of Biology, Georgetown University. Washington’s Cherry blossoms are in the limelight each year, while Magnolias, equally spectacular flowering trees, are somewhat in the shadows. The aim of this presentation is to tell you more about Magnolias – their evolution, diversity, and flowers – and hear what you have to say about them. This presentation features many colorful, original photos of Magnolia specimens in the Washington, D.C. Area Ecosystem (WDCAE) which includes DC and four surrounding counties, especially Georgetown University and the U.S. National Arboretum. About four of the approximately 224 world Magnolia species are native to the WDCAE and approximately 10 non-native species and 100 of their hybrids and cultivars can be found within this Ecosystem’s gardens, parks, and yards. Bring your Magnolia comments and questions and ride the Magnolia Magic Carpet with me.

Thursday 7/8 Exploring the Whole-of-Government Approach to Climate Change with Joe Bonfiglio, President Biden’s announcement during the first week of his young Presidency that he would marshal the entire federal government to combat climate change head-on took many by surprise. But in the earliest months of the Biden Administration, we are starting to see this directive in action. The EPA and the State Department have ramped up their engagement, as expected, but we’re also seeing plans emerge from the Department of Transportation, a reinvigorated CEQ and a robust staff of experts driving the agenda in the White House itself. Roughly, six months in, we’ll look at how these efforts are going, explore ways in which Capitol Hill is being helpful (or not) and take stock of the politics of climate change.
Joe Bonfiglio is President of EDF Action, a leading advocacy and political nonprofit, focused on driving climate progress in the U.S.
This event is brought to you by the Council of Former Federal Executives & Associates (COFFE).

Friday 7/16, 10:30am-11:30 am. About Face. Drawn from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s rich collection of paintings, drawings, and photographs, this tour will explore the multifaceted genre of portraiture across time and cultures. Portraits can represent who we are, who we want people to think we are, and who we wish to be. In this tour we will examine how various aspects of a portrait contribute to our understanding of the person being represented. This tour also provides an exciting opportunity to place selected museum works in dialogue with portraits from two exhibits currently at the Met: Alice Neel and The Medicis.

Friday 7/23, 10:30-11:30 am. American Impressionism The Smithsonian American Art Museum has one of the finest and largest collections from the last quarter of the nineteenth century, including American Impressionists. A generation of artists studied abroad and absorbed ideas that were revolutionizing painting in France. On this special docent tour, you will see the paintings of Mary Cassatt, Childe Hassam, Frank Weston Benson, and John Henry Twachtman. Mary Cassatt lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Degas and exhibited with the French Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women. Frederick Childe Hassam was noted for his urban and coastal scenes. Along with Cassatt and John Henry Twachtman, Hassam was instrumental in promulgating Impressionism to American collectors, dealers, and museums. He produced over 3,000 paintings, oils, watercolors, etchings, and lithographs over the course of his career.

Thursday 8/12 Learning to Smell with Don Wilson. Smell plays a surprisingly important role in our lives, and research is starting to open the door as to how this enigmatic sensory system gives us the power to explore the chemical world in which we live. We will talk about how humans and other animals use their sense of smell for everything from finding food, to bonding with family, to avoiding danger. We will dive into how our brains allow us to use odors to do these things, and how odors become so tightly linked to emotion and well-being. Most odors we experience are complex mixtures of many different chemicals and our olfactory systems learn to group these mixtures into distinct aromas. Thus, the ability to distinguish between the scent of jasmine and strawberry, or between a Merlot and a Pinot Noir, requires the olfactory system to learn and remember complex patterns. This places memory at the heart of our ability to smell and identify odors. Unfortunately this makes smell vulnerable to many different disorders such as dementia. We will talk about smell in health and disease and some simple ways to train your nose to extract all the richness of the smelly world.
Don Wilson received his Ph.D. in psychology from McMaster University and was a post-doctoral fellow in psychobiology at the University of California at Irvine. He is currently Director and Senior Research Scientist of the Emotional Brain Institute at the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research and Professor (tenured) of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Neuroscience & Physiology at New York University Langone School of Medicine. His research focuses on the interaction between memory and perception, especially in olfaction, as well as how experience shapes brain circuits across the lifespan from early development to aging.

Wednesday 8/25 Sugarloaf: A Small Mountain with Big History with Ralph Buglass. Learn about the remarkable "out-size" history -- and connections to important people -- of this little mountain on the western edge of Montgomery County. Our speaker is Ralph Buglass. The presentation will be a virtual, fast-paced visit through lots of pictures --including vintage photos from the Library of Congress-- highlighting Sugarloaf Mountain's extraordinary history that includes a structure designed for the summit of the mountain by the 20th century's most famous architect that instead became one of the most visited museums in New York City, consideration as Camp David site, its commemorative stamp, how it was designed as one of the first “national natural landmarks”, its unique flora and fauna, and unusual business enterprises that were located in its shadow
Ralph Buglass is a frequent speaker for Montgomery History, the county historical society, and an instructor at area lifelong learning programs. A retired communications professional, he recently co-authored a pictorial history of Rockville as part of the nationwide Images of America series. He has a BA in American history and MA in journalism from Cornell and American Universities, respectively. As an elementary student, he got his first library card from the then-newly opened Little Falls Library.

Tuesday 8/17 2:00-3:30pm. Memory Loss and Communication. Village volunteers and members are invited to register for a free training program led by the Alzheimer’s Association National Capital Area Chapter. The program will cover both communication and behavior difficulties experienced by those diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia and how their caregivers and families can manage these situations more effectively.
Do you want to learn more about how to be comfortable and successful communicating with people with neuro-cognitive difficulties? How to approach, reach them, and find a better way to lessen frustrations? This program will give you real-life tools you can use as you navigate the difficulties of being a care partner to a family member or to individuals you interact with as a volunteer.
Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways people living with dementia communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage. Join us to learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common triggers, and learn strategies to help manage some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease.
This event is coordinated by Bethesda Metro Area Village.

Thursday 9/9 How the Kennedy's Changed the World. The Kennedys in the World, a new book by Lawrence Haas, tells a new, rich, fascinating, and consequential story about Jack, Bobby, and Ted Kennedy. From an early age the brothers developed a deep understanding of the different peoples, cultures, and ideologies around the world; a keen appreciation for the challenges that such differences created for the United States; and a strong desire to reshape America’s response to them.
From their childhoods in the first half of the 20th century, the brothers were prodded by their parents to learn and care about the world – and told they could shape America’s role in it. For more than six decades after World War II, the brothers shaped broad issues of war and peace as well as the U.S. response to almost every major global challenge of their times: the Soviet Union and China, the Cold War and Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Chile, Nicaragua and El Salvador, Korea and Vietnam, South Africa and Northern Ireland, and Iraq (twice).
In their time, America was what it remains today – the world’s greatest power, with roles and responsibilities that stretch across the planet. Consequently, as the brothers remade America’s empire, they invariably changed the world.

Friday, September 10 at 10:30 – 11:30 Richard Neumann Collection: Reclaimed Art. This is a docent-led tour of the Richard Neumann Collection currently on loan to the Worcester Art Museum in recognition of Dr. Neumann's commitment to make his collection accessible to the public.
The Richard Neumann exhibit presents 14 paintings and sculptures from the once extensive art collection of Dr. Richard Neumann (1879-1959), recently reunited following his and his family's efforts over 75 years to regain possession of them. Following Nazi Germany's annexation of Austria in 1938, Neumann's collection was seized through forced sales as the family fled first from Vienna and later from Paris to Cuba. This exhibition presents the extraordinary story of Richard Neumann—a discerning collector committed to promoting the role of the arts in civic life, the family's persecution during World War II, and the long struggle to reassemble the collection. It represents a small fraction of his collection that has been successfully restituted to his heirs.

Thursday 10/14 Four Strategies for Living a Nourished Life with Carla Johnston, DCN, MA, MS, CNS, LDN. When we hear the word Nutrition, we may think of what is on the plate. When we hear the word Nourishment, we can think about what is on life’s plate.
Nutrition is certainly an important key to health, and for me, the conversation goes beyond food choices. When creating our health and wellness goals, especially as we continue to age, it is important to consider all influences that could impact our ability to adapt and shift. Life brings change, and we often need to adapt our plans accordingly. In this presentation, we will focus on four strategies that allow us to live a Nourished Life!
Dr. Carla Johnston is a licensed and board-certified nutritionist in Maryland who recently completed her doctorate in clinical nutrition. She currently holds an M.S. in Herbal Medicine from the Maryland University of Integrative Health, along with an M.A. in Applied Sociology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where she focused on the impact of chronic illness on aging adults. Dr. Johnston is a clinical practitioner who is a passionate advocate for aging adults seeking to incorporate health positive behaviors; partnering with those seeking to live their best lives. She is also the Associate Director of Community Outreach and Partnerships at Maryland University of Integrative Health.

Wednesday 10/27 Complementary Health Practices: An Overview with Carla Johnston, DCN, MA, MS, CNS, LDN. Traditional medicine allows us to incorporate wisdom from many cultures and centuries of practice. Contemporary medicine allows us to examine the evidence, the clinical applications of traditional medicine. For example, CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) has now been replaced with Integrative Medicine and Health. This shift illustrates the importance for each of us to be an active participant in our health and wellness care.
By incorporating both, we tap into our innate wisdom and allow us to tap into the wisdom that ultimately supports our body, mind, and soul. It proves to be beneficial for those seeking health goals as well as for those who are currently experiencing health challenges.

Thursday 11/4 How Fashion Survived WWII in Paris, London and New York with Elizabeth Lay, Design Historian, Curator, and Professor at GWU.
Fashion changed very little during WWII as scarcity defined each designers’ style. Behind wide shoulders and fitted suits, the apparel industry struggled to survive. The war’s impact reached beyond the industry itself as fashion houses and the supporting crafts employed thousands of people and accounted for a significant portion of each country’s GDP. Individually the Allied design centers faced different challenges: Paris was occupied by the Nazis, London sustained relentless bombing raids, and New York was hungry for fashion which some hoped the American would supplant the French. The talk will examine the war time conditions and how each center endured and ultimately flourished through creativity, innovation, and celebration.
Elizabeth Lay is a Design Historian and the Curator at Montgomery History’s Beall Dawson House and Stonestreet Museum in Rockville. She holds a Master’s degree in the History of Decorative Arts from the Smithsonian-GMU program in Design History, specializing in 20th century textiles, fashion, and women designers. This is an event the Planning Committee is exploring. Are you interested? Send me an email with 'Fallingwater' in the subject line.
Tuesday October 12 or Wednesday October 13, Day Trip to Fallingwater, chartered bus, leave 8:30 am & return 8:30 pm. Frank Lloyd Wright’s design of Fallingwater in 1935 was inspired by nature’s forms and principles, where materials, colors and design motifs were all derived from the natural features of the woodland site where it was built. Fallingwater best exemplifies Wright’s philosophy of organic architecture: the harmonious union of art and nature. In 2019 UNESCO inscribed Fallingwater, and seven other Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings, marking the first modern architecture designation on the UNESCO World Heritage List in the United States. More info on their website: Fallingwater
This event is a collaboration between Little Falls Village & Friendship Heights Neighbors Network.
Members & Volunteers of LFV. May open to non-members for additional charge, if space. Cost to be determined based on bus rental, will include Fallingwater House tour.

Friday 10/22 10:30-11:30 Sargent, Whistler, and Venetian Glass: American Artists and the Magic of Murano. This exhibition brings to life the Venetian glass revival of the nineteenth century on the famed island of Murano and the artistic experimentation the city inspired for artists such as John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler.
In addition to works by Sargent and Whistler, the exhibition features paintings and prints by Frank Duveneck, Thomas Moran, William Merritt Chase, Maurice Prendergast, Maxfield Parrish, Louise Cox, and Ellen Day Hale. These are featured alongside rarely seen Venetian glass mosaic portraits and glass cups, vases, and urns by the leading glassmakers of Murano, including members of the legendary Seguso, Barovier, and Moretti families. Remarkable works from the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection join loans from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and dozens of other distinguished public and private collections.

I want to highlight a weekly event in our community that is not to be missed! The Brookmont Farm Market is a year-round open-air extravaganza of over 30 chefs, bakers, and farmers plus craftspeople in the center of the Brookmont Village Green. Every Wednesday the space comes alive from 3-7:30 with wonderful FREE music concerts, food trucks, and more. The market is volunteer-run and does not charge vendors to participate - a unique model for supporting these wonderful, immigrant-owned, small businesses. Feast on Spanish fare from Jose Andres' Pepe food truck while you listen to jazz standards. Sample the wine and delicious baked goods. Relax in a beautiful family-friendly green space that even welcomes pups!
Enjoy just-picked fruits and produce, dairy, jewelry and ceramics from Turkey, textiles from India, soaps and scents from France, and a wide array of produce and prepared healthy and organic foods including gluten-free and vegetarian/vegan options. Whatever your preference, the Brookmont Farm & Craft Market has it! Come to shop and stay for dinner and music. In front of 6423 Broad Street, Bethesda, MD 20816.
