LGLC Purchases 86 Acres in Glenburnie, Protecting Sucker Brook and Lake George

On November 22, the LGLC purchased 86 acres of forested land in Glenburnie, Town of Putnam. This acquisition completes the LGLC’s Anthony’s Nose-to-Sucker Brook Connection project. This project included three transactions resulting in a total of 93 acres of newly protected land and 1,400 feet of Sucker Brook, one of the lake’s largest tributaries, providing critical water quality protection for Lake George.

The 86-acre purchase was completed in partnership with the Glenburnie community that came together to act as a conservation buyer, securing the property and providing time for permanent protection by the LGLC.

President of the Glenburnie Cottagers Association Tom Badenoch said, “After years of combined efforts, the Glenburnie community was thrilled to be able to partner with the Lake George Land Conservancy to preserve this critical link in the Sucker Brook Preserve. The protection of this land will help enhance the water quality of Lake George, preserve the scenic and open space values of the region and provide a critical wildlife corridor connecting protected lands from Gull Bay to Anthony’s Nose.”

The LGLC received a generous $10,000 donation from Hallam-ICS, delivered by employees Julie Montenegro and Jason Barry on December 4.

A B-Corp and employee-owned company, Hallam-ICS supports communities through volunteerism and financial donations. The team working out of their Malta office won a company-wide fitness challenge, and as a prize, were able to give $10,000 to a charity of their choice – the LGLC!

The LGLC is honored to be the recipient of this generous gift and will use it to further its mission of permanently protecting the land that protects Lake George.

MET! Challenge for the Future of Lake George

A mother and daughter stand facing Lake George, the mother with a baby in a back-carrier. Both mother and daughter hold their hands over their heads in the shape of a heart.

We had another incredible response to the Challenge for the Future of Lake George, a matching challenge to grow our planned giving program, the Land & Water Society, presented by longtime LGLC friend and Director Emeritus Virginia (Ginny) Rowan Smith and her husband Manning Smith.

We are very happy to report that, thanks to 24 new Land & Water Society members and 11 increased commitments from existing members, we exceeded the goal of $324,000 and earned the full match generously offered by the Smiths!

We are sincerely grateful to everyone who stepped up to this challenge and pledged to create a legacy of protection of these wild lands and pristine waters for future generations.

We are also grateful for Ginny and Manning’s gracious commitment and their vision to help build this pillar of support for the LGLC. The Smith’s matching donation will go to the LGLC’s Virginia Rowan Smith Endowment, which provides annual support for land conservation projects that will forever protect Lake George. Thank you!

Public Comment Period Open for LGLC Accreditation Renewal

The LGLC is applying for its second renewal of accreditation through the Land Trust Accreditation Program. This program recognizes land conservation organizations that meet national standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever.

During this process, the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance, conducts an extensive review of each applicant’s policies and programs. The LGLC is one of just 470 accredited land trusts in the country.

A public comment period is now open! We invite you to share your thoughts on how LGLC complies with these standards, which ensure ethical and technical operation. The Commission invites public input and accepts signed, written comments on pending applications.

To learn more or submit a comment, visit www.landtrustaccreditation.org or email info@landtrustaccreditation.org. Comments on LGLC’s application will be most useful by January 22, 2025. Your voice helps us further our mission to protect the land that protects the lake!
