OPERATIONAL REFERENDUM

LAKE GENEVA JOINT #1 OPERATIONAL REFERENDUM | VOTE APRIL 1

On Tuesday, April 1, 2025, our community will vote on a proposed non-recurring referendum for the Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District. If the operational referendum is not approved, the Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District will face a significant budget shortfall. To address this, the district may be forced to consider and implement a combination of, but not limited to, the following measures:

1. Abrupt Closure of an Elementary School

  • One of the three elementary schools will close beginning with the 2025-2026 school year.
  • Grade levels and school boundaries will be reorganized, and students will be reassigned to the remaining two schools.
  • Families will lose the option of school choice within the district and must attend their designated home school to balance school sizes and capacities.

2. Staff Reductions Resulting in Larger Class Size

  • 16-20 full-time positions (including teachers and essential staff) will be eliminated for the 2025-2026 School Year.
  • Class sizes will exceed the district’s target range, impacting individual attention and learning quality.

3. Reduced Opportunities for Students

  • Academic programs and extracurricular activities will be scaled back or eliminated.
  • In-town busing will be discontinued, increasing walking distances and bus ride times.
  • Families will face higher student fees.
  • A modified academic calendar will result in fewer instructional days, which will reduce the number of days students are in school learning.

4. Deferred Maintenance and Safety/Security

  • Repairs and updates to critical infrastructure (e.g., security cameras, doors, emergency communication (radios and phone systems)) will be delayed, increasing safety risks.

5. Increased Community Costs

  • Community fees for facility use will rise (youth groups/sports, community partners, etc.).
  • Reduced facility availability to save on operational costs.

Even with these cuts, the district’s financial stability will remain a challenge, deeply impacting the quality of education and community services. If this April 2025 referendum fails, the Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District will have to go back to the community for a future operational referendum.

When To Keep Your Child Home

When to Send Your Child to School

or Keep Them Home?

At Lake Geneva Schools, we know that regular attendance is key to academic success! Being in class daily helps students build strong habits, stay engaged, and gain valuable social skills. However, we also want to maintain a healthy, germ-free learning environment.

Use this guide (https://bit.ly/healthyLGS) to help decide when your child should attend school or stay home to recover. If your child has a fever over 100.4°F, vomiting, or diarrhea in the last 24 hours, it's best for them to rest at home. For minor symptoms like a runny nose, if there’s no fever, they’re ready for class!

When in doubt, contact the school health office, and let's work together to keep everyone healthy and learning!

DISTRICT TEXT ALERTS

Lake Geneva Schools has the ability to use SMS (text) messaging as another communication channel to share important information with families and staff regarding school closures or changes to the school day schedule. Federal law requires recipients to opt-in to receive such messages.

How can I opt-in to receive text messages?

📱Text the word “YES” or Y to 67587 from each wireless device on which you wish to receive texts.

📱Confirm that all text device numbers you wish to receive messages on are listed in your contact information: Families – verify that your cell phone is your primary phone number in your PowerSchool parent portal. If you are having difficulty making changes in Powerschool, feel free to call the main office at LGMS at 262-348-3000 if you need to change your phone number or make any other changes.

COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL

Whom do I contact with a question or suggestion?

Lake Geneva Schools’ communication protocols help promote direct, open, and respectful interactions so that we quickly and efficiently resolve problems and concerns. The communication protocol starts with the staff member closest to the situation, as that person usually has the most information. However, at times, additional personnel are required to resolve specific concerns.
