Because we only have space in this newsletter to feature a sampling of the upcoming events happening in Linden Hills, LHiNC has started to compile a larger list of community events and activities in our neighborhood! It's a handy reference to know what's going on in the neighborhood.

Kickoff 2025 with a big community cold plunge at Lake Harriet followed by a thaw out at Sauna Strong!
Cold Plunge Details:

Time: 10:00 a.m.

Location: Lake Harriet North Beach

What: Harrison Klein from Sauna Strong will kick it off by leading some breathwork and then there will be a group cold plunge in the lake!
Post-Plunge Sauna Session Details:

Time: Anytime after the cold plunge until 2:00 p.m.

Location: Sauna Strong

What: All of Sauna Strong's infrared and traditional saunas will be ready for some community sauna time!

Art Shanty Projects is returning January 18 to February 9! | |

Each winter Art Shanty Projects hosts an immersive art program on Bdé Umáŋ / Lake Harriet.
Artists embrace the challenges and opportunities of winter and the ephemeral nature of a frozen winter landscape to create a temporary vibrant and colorful public art community. Come experience the interactive and engaging art and performances around DIY shanties (temporary structures on ice).

Plus, the Art Shanty Projects will be on the lake with 20 interactive art shanties to explore.
🚐 Shuttle Service: A free shuttle will run from the Executive Building parking lot (3033 Excelsior Blvd) to the west side of Bde Maka Ska. Parking at Lake Harriet will be VERY limited, so park and ride the shuttle!

Learn about T.B. & Harriet Walker with the Linden Hills History Study Group | |

The Linden Hills History Study Group will be learning about T.B. and Harriet Walker and their contributions to Minneapolis on Monday, 1/27 at 7:00 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church.
Thomas Barlow (T.B.) Walker and Harriet Granger Hulet married and moved from Ohio to Minneapolis in 1863. They had eight children. T.B. began as a land surveyor. By 1923, he transitioned successfully to the lumber industry and became one of the ten wealthiest people in the world. Both T.B. and Harriet were philanthropy leaders in Minneapolis. They brought institutions from humble beginnings to city icons. These included Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis Public Library, Walker Art Center, Walker Methodist Church, and Walker Place. Bob Bayers will describe this family, their many contributions, and how Walker Place has evolved.
Everyone is welcome. The suggested donation is $5 for non-members of LHHSG.

Rare phenomenon called “frost flowers” visited Lake Harriet | |

MPRB's Water Quality staff captured this picture of a rare phenomenon called “frost flowers” on Lake Harriet in mid-December.
These delicate clusters of ice crystals can form on top of newly frozen ice only when it's very cold and the air is very still. Frost flowers are more commonly found on fresh sea ice, but can form on newly frozen freshwater lakes. They don't last long and are damaged by wind.
It's been years since we’ve had anything close to the right conditions for frost flowers like these!

MPRB's outdoor ice rinks to re-open soon! | |

The outdoor ice rinks are temporarily closed due to the recent warm weather.
The good news? Ice rinks should re-open this week as colder temperatures return. Visit MPRB's Ice Rinks page for full details on rink locations, openings and closures, warming room hours, and information on the rink building process.

Thank you for supporting the Waite House Toy & Food Drive! 🎁 | |

Thank you for supporting this year's food and toy drive for Waite House and the Phillips neighborhood! The team at Waite House is confident that we met our goal of supporting 350 families and 1,000 children!
The Waite House set up a “store” so that people could go through and pick out the toys appropriate to their needs. In addition to the toys, we were able to distribute some gift cards in support of seniors and the donated food will be distributed through their normal food pantry operation.

Steve Birch volunteers his time to coordinate the logistics of this drive (i.e., sponsors, donation sites, and the Waite House partnership). Steve says:
Drives like these are part of our basic obligation to each other. I don't mind putting the time and effort into organizing it and trying to make it easy for people to participate and give.
Rachel Weigert has been responsible for a huge share of the donations in the last two years. She multiplies her contribution by crowdsourcing additional donations from friends, family, and neighbors. Hear from Rachel:
In 2022, I was purchasing a few toys for a collection through People Serving People, and wondered if I could add to my overall donation by getting additional funds from others. I texted some friends and posted on social media. I was shocked when we raised almost $2,000 for toys!
The next year, that same drive wasn’t continuing, but I discovered this drive for Waite House. I love the opportunity to connect with our community throughout Minneapolis, and Waite House holds a special place in my heart because it is so close to Children’s Minnesota, where I work in the ER.
I hope to continue this as long as I'm able. Friends and family who donate live all over the world. Some grew up here, and others have no connection to the Twin Cities. It's so uplifting to see hundreds of people come together to bring a little holiday magic to these kids and their families.

Minneapolis might soon approve "The Fletcher" | |

Earlier this month, developers applied for zoning approvals of their proposed 15-unit condominium building, "The Fletcher", located at 2815, 2817, and 2821 West 44th Street.
The developers shared that their application is consistent with the overview they provided at the LHiNC Zoning and Housing Committee meeting in August. The proposed building is four stories tall with underground, enclosed parking. The building will have 15 for-sale condominium units and 30 planned parking spaces. At this time they are not aware of any variances required and they submitted for administrative site plan approval.
