Block Captains: Get Ready for National Night Out!

If you are a block captain, it's time to sign up for a National Night Out Block Party on Tuesday, August 6th!

The city has amended their process, so be sure to:

1. Determine your location, start and end time, and expected activities.
2. Alert your neighbors of your proposed block party with a flyer or other communication.
3. Fill out this form by July 30 if you plan to host a block party in 2024.
4. Follow the prompt in the form if you'd like to request a police officer visit.
5. Call 311 if you'd like to request a fire truck, police canine or police mounted patrol.

IMPORTANT: LHiNC sent a communication to all registered block captains earlier this week with the above information. If you didn't receive that communication, it means you aren't on our block captain list!

Pitch your WILD, WEIRD, SHANTASTIC ideas for this winter! 

The bright-yellow Linden Hills shanty was retired in 2024, so if you want to see a community shanty next year... consider designing a shanty of your own or forming a crew to apply by July 11!

Art Shanty Projects is currently seeking winter enthusiasts and creative adventurers to propose shanties, performances and art actions for the 2025 Program which will take place on Bdé Umáŋ (Lake Harriet) from 10am-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays, January 18 – February 9, 2025. Applications are due Thursday, July 11.

2025 CALL FOR SHANTY ARTISTS

Shanty artists build physical installations that remain throughout the month and are activated during all public festival hours. Shanties this year can be the classic interior version or can be an entirely exterior experience.

2025 CALL FOR PERFORMANCES + ART ACTIONS

These artists make projects for shorter durations (an hour, a day, a few days, etc). They may or may not have physical structures. Our definition of ‘performance’ and ‘art action’ is broad.

Portions of Bde Maka Ska Parkway will be closed to vehicles for July 4 weekend

The road is planned to close to vehicles the evening of July 3 and be fully reopened to vehicle traffic on the morning of July 5. Pedestrians and bicyclists will have full access to the parkway at all times.

West Bde Maka Ska Parkway will be closed from Richfield Road to Xerxes Avenue South. East Bde Maka Ska Parkway will be closed from West 36 Street to Lake Street. Read more from Southwest Voices.

Linden Hills Tennis Courts Have Been Resurfaced!

Credit is due to the Southwest High School Boys' Tennis team, who attended meetings of Linden Hills Neighborhood Council and the Fulton Neighborhood Association this spring.

The team, which practices and plays at Pershing and Linden Hills parks, shared information about the poor conditions of the courts with the neighborhood associations and Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB).

MPRB responded by resurfacing the courts at Linden Hills Park and they are looking into the cost of fixing the Pershing courts as well. As you enjoy a better surface to play at Linden Hills Park, be sure to thank the team and their coaches and parents for speaking up!

Seeking a flexible summer job? Senior Community Service is hiring workers at $20/hour to provide summer lawn mowing for seniors in Minneapolis and St. Louis Park. 

Is it safe to swim at the beaches?

Minneapolis has 12 beaches open for swimming from 6a-10p daily. The Lake Harriet Southeast Beach is temporarily closed because E. coli bacteria exceeded state-specific guidelines, likely due to recent rainfall washing bacteria from the landscape into the water. MPRB staff will re-sample on Thursday, June 20.

This Lake Water Quality Map shows beach advisories or closures, based on water quality monitoring for E.coli bacteria and blue-green algae, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. 

Tips from MPRB for swimming healthy:

• Don't swim if you or your child have diarrhea or are sick. 
• Be careful to not get lake water in your mouth. 
• Wash your hands before eating and after changing a diaper. 
• Avoid swimming for 48 hours after a heavy rainfall, when bacteria levels can be high.  
• Towel dry immediately after exiting the water to prevent Swimmer's Itch.
• Do not swim in water that looks like “pea soup” or spilled paint floating on the surface. 
• Keep children and pets out of blue-green algae scum.

Is the redevelopment project at the old Zumbro space still moving forward?

Many folks have been wondering if the 12,000 square foot office building planned for the old Zumbro space is still expected to move forward. The project was approved by the City Council in January 2023 and it was not impacted by the pause of the 2040 plan.

LHiNC reached out to the Minneapolis City Planning Commission in early June for an update. The representative for the city said that the developer is currently working with the city on permits, and the city expects them to begin development this year.

Sundays: Linden Hills Farmers Market in the Settergren's parking lot. Sundays from 10a-1p through 10/27. Rain or shine.

Sundays: Lake Harriet Park Market at the Lake Harriet Bandshell area. Sundays from 2-7p through 8/25. Features fresh foods, crafts, pottery, and treasures. 

Sundays: Sunday Dinners at Picnic. Sundays from 4-9p through the summer. Rotating pop-up dinners. No reservations – first come, first served.

JUNE

June 19: Fix It: Help with Bike Repairs on Wednesday, 6/19 from 4-8p at the Lake Harriet Bandshell parking lot. Roll into this open-house bike repair event, where you can ask MPRB's skilled bike mechanic questions, use tools and get information about taking care of your bike.

June 20: Summer Wine & Stroll on Thursday, 6/20 from 5-8:30p at 43rd & Upton. Sipping, strolling and shopping.

June 22: Owl Service on the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line. Saturday, 6/22 from 9p-midnight. Regular fare applies or $7 for an Owl Pass that gives one rider unlimited rides throughout the evening.

June 23: Comma Fiction Book Club. Meets at Comma the third Sunday of each month at 4p to discuss recent fiction publications. Next meeting is discussing Choice on Sunday, 6/23 (rescheduled due to Father's Day). Open to all.

July 6: Motorettes First Hire on the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line. Saturday, 7/6 from 6:30-8:30p. Celebration of the historic first hire of a woman by Twin City Lines. Regular fares apply.

July 12-20: Minneapolis Community Education presents: Disney's The Little Mermaid at Southwest High School. This is MCE’s annual intergenerational production. Tickets can be purchased online.

July 12: Simply Overdressed at Linden Hills Park on Friday, 7/12 at 6p. Great mix of family-friendly music from the original duo. All ages, free.

July 13: Nature Walk with Matt Schuth in Roberts Bird Sanctuary on Saturday, 7/13 at 10a. Matt is a long-time naturalist at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and author of the book, Nature at Our Doorstep. All ages and family-friendly, free, pre-registration required.

July 18: Linden Hills Library Book Club. Will meet next on Thursday, 7/18 at 7p to to discuss The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams. Hybrid in-person/online, please register in advance.

July 20: Next Lake Harriet Water Cleanup with the Lake Harriet Environment Council will be on Saturday, 7/20 at 9a. Meet at the Lake Harriet North Beach. No registration required.

Tuesdays: Weekly Story Time with Wild Rumpus. Tuesdays at 10:30a. Primarily geared towards toddlers and pre-schoolers.

Wednesdays: Girls Bike Adventures Club. 6-7:30p on Wednesdays from 7/10 to 8/7 at the Linden Hills Rec Center. Provides girls with an opportunity to learn new bike skills and explore natural spaces within a bike ride of the recreation center. Ages 7-10, $40 for residents, register online.

Fridays: Baby Storytime at Linden Hills Library. Fridays at 10a & 11a. Share books, stories, rhymes, music and movement in a format especially designed for babies. For children from birth to 24 months and their caregivers, no registration required.

Saturdays: Mini-Movers Sports. Saturdays 7/13 through 8/3 from 11-11:45a at the Linden Hills Park. Introduction to sports through skills and coordination that are fun and exciting. Ages 5-7, $30 for residents, register online.

DAY CAMPS

June 24-27: Linden Lodge – All About Pets. Monday, 6/24 through Thursday, 6/27 from 9:30a to 12:30p at the Linden Hills Rec Center. Have fun creating animal crafts while learning how to treat your cute family member so they're happy and healthy. Ages 3-5, $80 for residents, register online.

June 24-27: Camp Linden Hills. Monday, 6/24 through Thursday, 6/27 from 1-4p at the Linden Hills Rec Center. This mini-camp includes games, arts and crafts, nature exploration, movement exercises and water play. Ages 6-10, $80 for residents, register online.

July 8-11: Linden Lodge – Underwater Creatures. Monday, 7/8 through Thursday, 7/11 from 9:30a to 12:30p at the Linden Hills Rec Center. Create fabulous works of art while talking about our favorite creatures that swim and crawl beneath the surface. Ages 3-5, $80 for residents, register online.

July 8-11: Camp Fun-N-Sun – Sports Extravaganza. Monday, 7/8 through Thursday, 7/11 from 1-4p at the Linden Hills Rec Center. Designed to introduce campers to a variety of sports. Ages 6-10, $80 for residents, register online.

July 22-25: Storybook Camp. Monday, 7/22 through Thursday, 7/25 from 9:30a-12:30p at the Linden Hills Rec Center. Read classics from Go Dog Go to Mo Willems books. One day will include a walk to the Linden Hills Library to explore. Ages 3-6, $80 for residents, register online.

Various: Heartfelt Craft Camps. This is Heartfelt's 12th year offering summer camps. Their camps allow time for more in-depth projects that are beloved by campers and teachers alike. See their flyer for more information, register your child by calling or visiting the shop.

JUNE

June 22: How the Birds Got Their Songs Story Time at Wild Rumpus. Saturday, 6/22 at 11a. Story time, snacks, and chats with author Travis Zimmerman.

June 23: Wild Things Book Club with Wild Rumpus. For readers around 6 to 9 years old. Meets one Sunday a month at 5:30p on Zoom. June meeting is Sunday, 6/23.

June 25: PJ Party on the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line in partnership with Wild Rumpus. Milk and cookies on the platform, followed by a bedtime story from a noted children’s author or illustrator before returning to the station. This was rescheduled from 6/18 so there are now a few tickets remaining, $5 per passenger.

June 26: Stroll, Craft and Play at the Linden Hills Library. Every other Wednesday (starting 6/26) at 10a. Stroll and read along the trail on the library’s lawn as you “step” into the pages of four books throughout the summer. Then create a craft inspired by the book.

June 29: LEGO® Lab at the Linden Hills Library on Saturday, 6/29 from 10a-12p. Calling all future engineers and architects! Drop in for a while or stay the entire time! DUPLOS® also available, so all ages are welcome. No registration is required, but room capacity is limited.

June 30: Purple Door Book Club with Wild Rumpus. For readers around 8 to 12 years old. Meets one Sunday a month at 5:30p, typically on Zoom. June meeting is in-person on Sunday, 6/30.

JULY

Learn the basics of drawing, exploring different ways of mark-making, various tools (pencil, pen, ink, marker), and some light art history showing different styles. For kids entering grades 6-12, free, registration required and open now.

July 10: Stroll, Craft and Play at the Linden Hills Library. Every other Wednesday at 10a. Stroll and read along the trail on the library’s lawn as you “step” into the pages of four books throughout the summer. Then create a craft inspired by the book.

July 13: Comic Creations at Linden Hills Library on Saturday 7/13 at 10:30a. In collaboration with Children’s Theatre Company. Students will use improv and theatre games to explore character, setting and theme to create an original four panel comic. For kids entering grades 3-5, free, registration required and opens this Saturday.

July 16: Imagineering at the Linden Hills Library on Tuesday, 7/16 at 2p. In collaboration with ArtStart. Take a whirlwind tour of your imagination as an artist challenges you to create a fantastical creature from a single cardboard box! For kids entering grades 2-5, free, registration required and opens two weeks before program.

June - August: Wild Rumpus Summer Reading Challenge. Pick up a bingo sheet in-store only during June & July. Turn in your bingo sheet in-store between August 18-31 to get a prize and be entered into the pool for bigger prizes!

June - August: Inner City Tennis at Linden Hills Park. One-hour classes run Mon to Friday each week between 8a-12p (depending on age). Started this Monday and repeats weekly through 8/2. Ages 6-17, $70 per week, register online. Scholarships available: 50%, 75%, 100%.

June - August: Youth Sailing Lessons on Lake Harriet. Learn the basics of sailing including tacking, gybing, knots, wind, boat rigging, and docking. Ages 7-17, $125 per session week for residents, register online.
