Legends of LIC

Legends of LIC - "How Long Island City Got a Courthouse"

By Bob Singleton, executive director, Greater Astoria Historical Society

"The earliest Township court in western Queens, in Jamaica, was destroyed during the American Revolution. Its replacement, near the geographic center of Queens County, was a sparsely populated location and was both unpopular and inconvenient for everyone.

About 1840, the search for a new County Seat started. Finding a replacement was all but impossible as the leading communities, Jamaica and Hempstead, were strikingly different by every measure each differing ten-fold in expenses, tax revenues, and number of ‘paupers.’

It was all a moot point for by 1870, a new entity, Long Island City was created which gave it a majority on the County’s Board of Supervisors and the advantage of being the hub of the Long Island Railroad network joining that community to Long Island and Manhattan." Read On Here
