Legends of LIC

Legends of LIC - "The Story of Sony Corporation of America (SONAM)"

By Bob Singleton, Executive Director, Greater Astoria Historical Society

As Sony Corporation's American sales climbed, by 1960 their overseas office had spun off a subsidiary, Sony Corporation of America (SONAM). SONAM rented a building at 47-47 Van Dam Street in Long Island City – in part because there was a bilingual Japanese expatriate population in Queens which could help in staffing. For the next 30 years this location would play a crucial role in Sony’s development. Read more here.
