In August 2020, John decided it was time to focus on his health. He knew he needed help and guidance to be able to meet his goals. he made the decision to sign up for personal training at LIFT with Ali. Over the past several months Ali has pushed him to get closer to his health goals. She has worked hard with him on weight lifting, cardio training, and resistance training. With her passion for health and excellent guidance he has lost 10lbs, his energy level has increased and he has lost several inches. This past December he was able to fit in a pair of jeans that he was unable to fit in throughout 2020.

As Annette watched John's health improve and saw how hard he was working at LIFT with Ali's guidance, she decided it was time for her to focus on her health. October 2020 she also hired Ali to be her personal trainer. Annette came to Ali with big health goals: lose weight, have more energy, and feel better physically & mentally. Ali has pushed Annette just as hard as she has pushed John. To date, she has lost 12lbs and a few inches was also able to fit into a smaller pair of jeans in December 2020.

Both John & Annette have continued to work towards their goals with Ali!

Our third lesson on mindful eating is on hunger, specifically, what are the different types of hunger. The four types of hunger are physical, emotional, taste, and practical. All four of these types of hungers are different, but they are all valid reasons to eat. Physical hunger is the hunger we typically think of when discussing the topic of hunger. It occurs when your body needs energy and can result in feeling emptiness or grumbling in the stomach, or feeling weak. Feeling this type of hunger signals that we need food, just like having a full bladder means we have to urinate, or a dry mouth means that we should drink.

Emotional hunger, or emotional eating as it’s commonly called, does not typically show the same signs that physical hunger does, and more often comes on quickly with a desire for a specific food. This type of hunger can come with a strong emotion such as stress or sadness, or even a less noticeable feeling such as boredom. Eating may temporarily distract and comfort you from the emotion, but is not beneficial long term. When it comes to emotional hunger, you can use food as a tool in coping with the emotion, but it should not be your only tool.

Taste hunger is something we briefly touched on last month but it wasn’t called that. It was referred to as the food that would “hit the spot,” or satisfied your craving. Taste hunger is when you want a specific flavor or food. It does not necessarily occur when you are physically hungry but it can. If taste hunger accompanies physical hunger, then eating a meal that includes your craving may be the best fix. If it does not, then perhaps a snack or waiting until your next meal may be beneficial.

Practical hunger is more of a learned skill, one that we will talk about again next month. Practical hunger occurs when you know you won’t be able to eat when physical hunger sets in so you plan around it. Examples may be eating during your lunch break even if you aren’t hungry yet, eating a large breakfast because you will be running errands all day and don’t know when you will be able to sit for lunch, or even when you have to take a medication with food at the same time every day.

These four types of hunger are all valid reasons to eat, but eating the same thing to satisfy all of them won’t work. Taking a moment to figure out which type of hunger you are dealing with can help you make a better decision as to what you are hungry for. This month, the mindful eating exercise is to take a moment when you feel “hungry,” and try to determine which type of hunger it is.
