"I started personal training with Megan approximately three months after making dietary changes and joining LIFT Wellness Center. I had specific goals for strengthening weak areas and building muscle for my goal of running a full marathon within the year.
The last eight months have been transformative for me. I have built muscles I didn’t think I “could” such as chest and shoulders while strengthening my legs in a way that running alone would not accomplish. I have lost inches in all measurement areas and gained visible muscle tone in some.
What I love about personal training is finding new ways to work for the same muscle groups so it does not feel repetitive or monotonous. I also love having a cheerleader both during my session and whenever I have an accomplishment to share. I also need accountability sometimes because I suffer from a chronic condition but I know that if I show up willing, Megan will find a way to help me train and I almost always feel somewhat better afterward instead of worse.
I recently completed my first 3-day 5K/10K/Half Marathon challenge since early 2020 and have never felt stronger, leaner, and more fit. It was the most prepared I ever felt. I set a personal course record in my 10K even in constant rain and I woke up on the fourth day without pain, soreness or misgivings. I am confident personal training is helping me accomplish my goals - and then I’ll set new goals!"
Congratulations Martha we are so proud of you!

WHY FAST WEIGHT LOSS WORKS
HMR programs help individuals achieve fast weight loss in a livable way by encouraging people to eat more and stay satisfied, which makes it easier to stick to the program in the short-term, and over the long haul.
According to LIFT Weight Management and LIFT Wellness Center Director, Miki Martin, "Losing weight quickly is incredibly motivating. It can help people stick with their diet longer, which is especially important if you have a lot of weight to lose. Many of our clients have 30, 40, even 100 or more pounds to lose, so fast weight loss is important to keep up momentum." Miki also adds, " It's a common misconception that fast weight loss isn't healthy or sustainable, and that it will lead to weight regain. That is simply not true. Studies have shown that following a lifestyle- change program that promotes fast initial weight loss is associated with better long-term success.
HMR focuses on three skill areas critical for weight-loss and weight maintenance:
- How to make healthier food choices
- How to eat more fruits and vegetables
- How to increase physical activity
Research has shown that practicing these skills may also help reduce the risk factors for the development of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some types of cancer, and other chronic diseases.

Ricky Dorris joined CrossFit LWC when we first started CrossFit in October of 2020
"I joined CF LWC because I've always enjoyed how CrossFit doesn't focus on just one area in fitness and helps you be a well-rounded athlete. I enjoy CF LWC because it makes working out easy. Show up and do the work.
The work is never easy but it's so nice having it all planned out for me. The best part of CrossFIT LWC is the community. For over a year now the gym has been the best part of my day because of all of the members in class. We cheer each other on and push each other every day."
Ricky, we are so glad you decide to join CrossFit LWC and you show up to do the work!

Clayton Ruesewald
Clayton is the Membership and Retention Coordinator here at LIFT Wellness. Clayton is originally from Crockett County but has lived in Jackson for the past two years. Before joining the team Clayton worked for Aramark Uniform Services. He was a member of LIFT previously and learned about the job opening here and thought it would be a great place to work.
Clayton is currently studying Business Management at Jackson State Community College and hopes to use his degree to forge a career here at LIFT Wellness Center.
Clayton loves working at LIFT because he enjoys hearing members’ stories. He remembers a gentleman right when he first started working the front desk that came in with the assistance of a walker and now is able to come in without the use of a walker and that to him is the meaning of LIFT. He loves seeing our member’s success and it warms his heart.
When Clayton isn’t working, you can find him spending time with his fiancé, Alexis.
Thanks, Clayton for all you do and continue to do here at LIFT! We are proud to call you one of our own. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding in January.

The holiday season is full of sweets and treats, and for people who are trying to eat healthier or manage their blood sugar, it can be a tough time. If you are making the treats this holiday season, take a look at some great ways to reduce sugar or fat, and add in fiber and nutrients!
1) For many recipes you can slightly reduce the amount of sugar used and you won’t notice any changes in taste! If the dessert is fruity, you can cut the sugar by up to one-third. This is a great method to use if you don’t want to “ruin” a family recipe or a fan favorite but you want to make it a little healthier.
2) Dark chocolate has more of the health benefits of chocolate, but less of the sugar compared to milk chocolate or white chocolate. Next time try reaching for the 70% cacao dark chocolate, especially if you are adding it to a sweet dessert! The sweetness from the rest of the dessert will balance the slightly-less sweet chocolate. You can also add walnuts to increase the fiber, magnesium, and iron content, as well as adding in some great omega-3 fatty acids!
3) Whole wheat pastry flour can offer more fiber and nutrients from the bran and germ of the grain. This can make the food more satisfying and filling so you don’t eat as much at a time. Some resources suggest reducing how much of the whole wheat pastry flour you use when using it instead of regular pastry flour
4) Using pureed avocado instead of butter replaces the saturated fat with heart-healthy unsaturated fat and fiber, and may reduce your risk for heart disease. This is a great swap because you don’t have to think about the math! You can use the same amount of pureed avocado as you would butter. There may be a color change in the dessert, so try it in chocolate desserts or add in a touch of green food dye to make it seasonal and fun. Another great substitution you can use is applesauce instead of oil, eggs, or sugar. The amount you use depends on what you are substituting it for.
If you aren’t the baking type, but you do enjoy sampling the holiday treats, here are some helpful tips for you as well! Be mindful of portion size. The more we eat something the less satisfying it is, so instead of getting a huge slice of pie but only truly enjoying half of it, cut a smaller piece. It’s also helpful to focus on the foods you don’t get year-round, and as always, practice mindful eating! Eat slowly, enjoy the taste, texture, and smell of what you’re eating. If you don’t love it, or if it isn’t as good as you thought it was, it’s ok to leave it alone.
Are you looking for a tasty but unique treat to share with your loved ones? Try these Orange Cranberry Biscotti! This crunchy cookie tastes best dipped in coffee or tea, and is perfect for gifting!

Orange Cranberry Biscotti
|
|
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour (can use whole wheat flour)
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground cloves
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup pistachios
- 1/2 cup dried cranberries
- Zest of 1 orange
Instructions
1) Preheat oven to 350F. Line a sheet with parchment paper.
2) Combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, cloves, salt, and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Stir.
3) Add butter and eggs and mix until well combined. Gently mix in the orange zest, cranberries, and pistachios until mixed evenly.
4) Divide the dough into two halves, and place on the parchment paper. Shape each into a rectangle, no wider than 4 inches, and about 1 inch thick.
5) Bake for 35 minutes, then remove from the oven and turn the oven down to 325F. Let the biscotti cool for 20 minutes.
6) Gently slice the biscotti with a sharp knife into half inch thick slices. Turn the biscotti slices on a cut side and bake for 25-30 more minutes, flipping halfway through.
7) Let the cookies cool completely before eating, then dip in your favorite hot beverage like coffee, a chai latte, or hot chocolate!
