WHY FAST WEIGHT LOSS WORKS
HMR programs help individuals achieve fast weight loss in a livable way by encouraging people to eat more and stay satisfied, which makes it easier to stick to the program in the short-term, and over the long haul.
According to LIFT Weight Management and LIFT Wellness Center Director, Miki Martin, "Losing weight quickly is incredibly motivating. It can help people stick with their diet longer, which is especially important if you have a lot of weight to lose. Many of our clients have 30, 40, even 100 or more pounds to lose, so fast weight loss is important to keep up momentum." Miki also adds, " It's a common misconception that fast weight loss isn't healthy or sustainable, and that it will lead to weight regain. That is simply not true. Studies have shown that following a lifestyle- change program that promotes fast initial weight loss is associated with better long-term success.
HMR focuses on three skill areas critical for weight-loss and weight maintenance:
- How to make healthier food choices
- How to eat more fruits and vegetables
- How to increase physical activity
Research has shown that practicing these skills may also help reduce the risk factors for the development of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some types of cancer, and other chronic diseases.

Although he may present a little quiet at times, Josiah is normally seen conversing with members when he isn’t taking care of other job duties. Josiah is a ‘go-to’ employee in the pool. He is very good at keeping things in working order. His work ethic is only surpassed by his passion to help others. You may see Josiah in the gym area working out after his shift. He has made great strides in his personal health this past year. I have noticed, when Josiah sets his mind on a task or a goal, he will always give his all to succeed. "-Kent Schott, Fitness Manager

Mindful Eating- Part 5
Appreciation
For the last lesson in the series on mindful eating, we are going to focus on appreciation and gratitude. If you are thinking, “how can I focus on appreciation and gratitude when I am eating?” then some questions you may want to consider while eating your next meal might be:
- Where does this food come from?
- How did it get on my plate?
- Who nurtured, tended, grew, and/or raised my food?
- Who selected the food?
- Who prepared the food?
These questions may seem silly at first, but the more we learn about how our food gets to our plates the more appreciative we are when it gets there. Think of the lengthy process it took from the start of your foods life to get all the way to where it is now. If you don’t know how something is grown or made, then perhaps it is a good time to find out! For example, the pineapple in your fruit salad may surprise you. It takes up to 2 years for a pineapple plant to produce one pineapple, and it takes 200 flowers growing together to develop into that one fruit! This lengthy process may make you be a little more appreciative of the patience of the farmers that grew that fruit for you.
Now, this is our final lesson on mindful eating, but that doesn’t mean we should just forget about it. Using the tools discussed over these past five months can help you have a better eating experience, improve digestion, and be more intentional about your eating choices. Focusing on the food, incorporating satisfying meals, recognizing what type of hunger we are experiencing, and being aware of your hunger and fullness cues are all important parts of eating mindfully. This month's recipe is all about simplicity, but the effort put in creates a greater appreciation for the meal!

Homemade pasta
Ingredients:
3 ¼ cups all purpose flour
4 large eggs
Instructions
Place the flour and eggs in the bowl of a stand mixer.
Using a dough hook, start mixing slowly until it comes together as a ball.
Once it forms into a ball, increase the speed to medium and mix for 5 minutes, until the dough is smooth.
Take the dough out of the bowl and wrap in plastic wrap (ensure it's fully covered so it doesn't dry out) and place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes, and up to 12 hours.
Remove from the fridge and split the dough into 4 pieces.
Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface until the dough is as thin as you can possibly get it. You should just about be able to see the shape of your hand through the dough.
Cut the pasta into any shape you want. Large rectangles (lasagna), squares (ravioli) or long thin strips.
To cook the pasta, place in a large pan of salted boiling water. Bring back to the boil and simmer for 3 minutes. The pasta should float to the top of the water when cooked.
