"I moved to Jackson in February. Shortly after I joined LIFT Wellness Center. I wanted a heated pool to swim in. After I swam I would always get in the hot tub.

One day there was an aquafit class going on. The group leader was passing out frisbees to her students tossing them to the students. I heard a ruckus and saw she had overthrown the frisbee. I laughed and commented loudly from the hot tub, “muscles!” And Sheila threw a frisbee to me and told me to use it. Previously Sheila and another group instructor, Keith, had invited me to join their group. I had declined, but this time frisbee in hand, I joined in on the class. And joined Keith in his next class. I became a regular. They both told me the rules. Don’t drown and don’t get hurt. Modify if I was unable to do the exercises.

It was time for knee replacement surgery and I had been doing extra exercises in the water to strengthen my legs. On September 14, I had total knee replacement surgery. On September 19, I put down my walker and cane. On September 24, I started climbing 17 steps. September 29, I saw my surgeon and he was amazed. Dr. Sickle told me I was recuperating faster and better than any patient he’s ever had.

So how did this happen? I give credit to the doctors, nurses, and physical therapists. But I also give credit to Sheila, Keith, and Carrie for the inspiration to do more before surgery so afterward would go better! It wouldn’t have happened without them. The “sit and fit class”, the “chair yoga class” and the “SAIL” classes were also instrumental!

If you’re having or considering surgery, talk to the people at LIFT Wellness Center. They’re all knowledgeable. They’re all helpful. And they’ve made my life better!"

Roger, we are so glad you chose us pre-surgery and that you recovered so well!

CrossFit LWC Success
"My name is Dani Wyszynski and I joined Crossfit LIFT Wellness Center in July 2021. I was invited by a friend to join Crossfit. It took about a month to persuade me into joining. I have thoroughly enjoyed it so far. I love how Crossfit is an hour-long of pushing yourself to your limit. I also love how everyone is always cheering each other on to finish that last rep. I've had many personal goals that I've accomplished. I always surprise myself with the physical and mental strength I've gained from CrossFit. Blake and Chelsea are amazing coaches from the beginner to the more active. The coaches truly want you to succeed in your wellness journey."

Dani, we are so glad you decide to join CrossFit LWC and have accomplished some of your goals!

Olivia Hall

I have been a member of LIFT since the opening year, fell in love with the facility, and pursued a career in fitness. However, health was not always my main priority. Before working at LIFT, I managed a bakery. Surrounded by sweets on a daily basis, I was living life 50% cakes, 50% gym: best of both worlds! Working in the pastry atmosphere opened my eyes to how important not only physical activity was but also nutrition. I have now been a Certified Personal Trainer here at LIFT for 2 years. My goal is to encourage people to live life to the fullest, better their quality of life, and enjoy everything in moderation.

Olivia, thank you for everything you do at LIFT! We are especially thankful for the cakes and cookies you bring! We believe everything in moderation also!
November is American Diabetes Month!

Did you know we have a Diabetes program with Exercise is Medicine?

Diabetes can be very complicated and needs to be taken seriously. Luckily, there is research that shows that an exercise program can help individuals reduce their risk of diabetes or even help control current diagnoses of diabetes. There are safe and effective exercise programs for individuals with diabetes. Under the guidance of an exercise specialist, individuals will learn how to include cardiovascular, strength training, and flexibility programs into their everyday lives. They will learn how much exercise is needed and learn how exercise can enhance their quality of life.

Take this quick risk test to see if you should talk to your doctor about your risk for diabetes.

If you have diabetes or you are at risk, ask your doctor to prescribe Exercise is Medicine to help prevent & manage diabetes. More Information

November is National Diabetes Month, and this year the focus is on prediabetes and diabetes prevention. Prediabetes is a condition where your blood sugar levels are higher than what is considered normal, but not quite at the level where it would be considered diabetes. It is estimated that 1 in 3 Americans have prediabetes, and many don’t know they have it. According to the CDC, many people with prediabetes could develop type 2 diabetes within five years if they do not make changes to their lifestyle. Diabetes can increase your risk for heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and loss of toes, feet, or legs.

The first step in prevention is knowing your risk. There are diabetes and prediabetes risk tests available ( such as this one: https://www.cdc.gov/prediabetes/takethetest/), but the best way to know is to visit your doctor regularly and to ensure you are getting lab work done. If you find you are at risk or have prediabetes, there are steps you can take to reverse it. Being more physically active has many benefits such as increasing your sensitivity to insulin and reducing your blood sugar. If starting an intense workout program right now seems overwhelming, you can start small by breaking up how long you are sitting, trying to limit it to no more than an hour at a time. Incorporating fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help you feel fuller, for longer, and can help level out your blood sugar.

As always, when looking to make changes in your diet it is best to start with small, sustainable changes. Although making big or drastic changes may seem more impactful, they are not typically as successful long term. Some changes to get you started could be to take a walk on your lunch break, reduce your sweetened drink intake, or include a vegetable with each meal.
Minestrone with Turkey Meatballs
Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 sweet onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, peeled and diced
  • 1 stalk celery, diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 8 cups chicken stock
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 3/4 cup ditalini pasta
  • 2 medium zucchini, halved and sliced
  • 3 cups baby spinach
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves
  • Turkey meatballs (may have to cook longer if frozen)

Directions
  • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large stockpot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add meatballs, in batches, and cook until all sides are browned, about 2-3 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate; set aside.

  • Add remaining 1 tablespoon oil to the stockpot. Add garlic, onion, carrots and celery. Cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in thyme until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  • Whisk in chicken stock and bay leaves; bring to a boil. Stir in pasta and meatballs; reduce heat and simmer until pasta is tender and meatballs are cooked through, about 10-12 minutes. Stir in zucchini and spinach until the spinach has wilted, about 2 minutes.

  • Stir in lemon juice and parsley; season with salt and pepper, to taste.
