Member Spotlight
Nick Ellis

Nick Ellis has been a member of LIFT Wellness Center since May 2021. He started his journey with LIFT to make an active decision to change his lifestyle. Nick stated, “I was tired of feeling sluggish and unmotivated to make a change. The Healthy Heights program really gave me the incentive I needed to get started.”

Since starting at LIFT Wellness Center, Nick has lost over 39lbs. He accredits his weight loss to not only the hard work he has put in but to Andrea Lindsey and Kerri Love of the HMR Weight Management program. Nick mentioned, “The ladies in HMR have helped with my motivation and taught me how to properly diet and fuel my body with foods that are healthy.” Once Nick started to see progress there was absolutely no stopping him.

Here at LIFT Wellness, we would like to applaud Nick for his great achievement and progress over the past 3 months. We are very excited for what the future holds and cannot wait to see where your fitness journey at LIFT takes you.

CrossFit LWC Success
Jeremy Harwell

I joined CrossFit LWC because I wanted something different to push myself in all aspects of physical health.

Thus far CrossFit has exceeded my expectations with vast gains in my flexibility, cardiovascular condition, and strength as there’s always a new challenge or goal right around the corner.

CrossFit also offers a great blend of competitiveness and camaraderie with great professional trainers. There’s an extra boost in my step I haven’t had in years and I look forward to seeing what the future holds.

Post-Covid Program Success Story

"The Coronavirus at Jackson General Hospital was just beginning to evolve in early March 2020. In June, I was out of work. My return to work was close to June. In November my life was about to change. I remember like it was yesterday. A friend of my husband's had passed Saturday, we were up most of the night. Sunday, I felt so exhausted. A co-worker mentioned a respiratory therapist that had worked with us was positive with Covid. I could barely stay awake. I was worried to drive home. I remember calling my family on the way, I told them to stay upstairs when I get home, I think I may have been exposed to COVID. I wasn't sure if it was from the fatigue of not sleeping the night before or not, however, something kept gnawing at me thinking it was COVID. I washed all my clothes and immediately showered upon my return home, then isolated myself until the morning. I was going to get tested. They didn't call the next day as they were supposed to. So, I called the following morning to find my test was positive. I couldn't believe it, who had I exposed? Will my family get it? I was worried about everyone else but myself. Ten days of isolation and no taste or smell was the worst part, I was more than ready to go back to work. Last day or two I had noticed a lot of audible congestion when I breathed at night and in the morning, so I went to the doctors just to make sure I was good to return to work. The feeling of exposing someone that has a baby at home was scary. I didn't want to risk it. The doctor found I had pneumonia.

Pneumonia is no big deal, I had pneumonia once before. I didn't even know I had it then. I'll be fine. Doc cleared me in 48 hours to return to work. I was so happy to go back to work. I had a harder time keeping up with my assignment load, walking the stairs was nearing impossible; despite this, everyone told me it would take weeks before I felt like myself. As time passed, I was calling in and out of work. Pneumonia kept returning and my stamina was that of a person in their 80's with chronic COPD. I heard people, the words would just float around. I was dizzy all the time. My chest hurt, I couldn't breathe. I had to leave work and go on short-term disability. I can't believe this.

Eight months have passed, on and off short term disability and FMLA, multiple specialists, second opinions, thousands of hours of research, four episodes of pneumonia reoccurring, a new diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune medications like methotrexate, antibiotics, prednisone, inhalers, cat scans, chest X-rays, cardiology workup, you name it, I was tested for it.

One day, I received an email from my boss about post covid therapy services offered for free by LIFT Wellness Center. Well, I have tried everything else, why not this. On day 1, they tested my balance, measurements, and other baseline vital signs. I was so embarrassed for I was up more than 50 pounds, my oxygen was 80's at best just standing. I could barely move on the bicycle, I felt so week and so hopeless. I began following the plan my Specialist, Ali, had set up for me. I did the best I could while being careful to watch my oxygen and dizziness. There seemed to be some light at the end of the tunnel. Then, pneumonia was back. I was taken off immune suppressants and put on prednisone. Despite, the setback, I knew sitting at home doing nothing wouldn't help. I went back to the gym and returned to my routine.

After returning initially, I truthfully almost gave up. I felt like nothing was changing. I could do this at home with all the chores I have to do I told myself. I just wanted to give up, nothing was going to change. However, if I don't try, my doctors, my Exercise Specialists, no one could do it for me. Every week I began doing more and more. I couldn't believe it. I am so motivated even though I haven't shed a pound, I can do more. I can clean my house, I can go grocery shopping with my husband, I can do all the things I love doing. I'm now back to work part-time and light duty. Its been nine months since my original diagnosis of COVID. I don't feel helpless, I feel empowered to take control. I couldn't have done it without Ali! Thank you for believing in me, listening to me, and lending an ear. Thank you for not being judgmental and understanding. Thank you for being compassionate and kind, you are a beautiful person inside and out! I don't think you realize how much you have helped me. I will keep working, I will keep fighting, and I won't give up. It's not who I am."

HIIT Boxing Success
April Blair
“During my journey to get healthy and lose weight, it took a bit for Ali to convince me to try HIIT boxing. After one class, I was officially hooked. This class is high energy and so much fun. It's a great way to burn a ton of calories and get back in great shape. It kicks my butt every time, but I leave anticipating the next class.”
April has lost 44lbs since February 2020!

April we are so proud of you!
The saying “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” has been around for quite a while, but lately it seems that breakfast has been getting the boot! This first meal of the day is the perfect opportunity to focus on making a healthy decision, because it can set you up for success for the rest of your day. A breakfast that contains protein, fat, and fiber will satisfy hunger hormones and will keep you feeling fuller, longer.

Protein sources that are perfect for breakfast may include eggs, greek yogurt, or peanut butter. Avocado, nuts, peanut butter, or chia seeds are sources of healthy fats that also provide satisfaction with meals. Whole grains are a great source of fiber, so including a whole grain bagel, bread, or oatmeal can be a tasty way to keep you feeling full! All three of these whole grains are great to use as a starting point for your breakfast. Adding peanut butter and fruit to bread, or hummus, tomatoes, and onions to a bagel add a welcome bit of color as well as additional vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Creating a breakfast that has protein, fat, and fiber can be as simple or complex as you would like it to be. The most important thing to remember is that it must taste good to you. I have included a list of some of my favorite go-to breakfast ideas, so I hope you enjoy them and they get your mind thinking about breakfast!

· Whole grain English muffin sandwich with tomato, spinach, cheese, and egg
·  Roasted kale and sweet potato with chopped walnuts and soft-boiled egg
·  Whole wheat toast with peanut butter, strawberries, banana, and cinnamon
· Whole grain toast with pesto and scrambled egg
· Shake- protein powder, frozen zucchini, spinach, banana, and peanut butter (you can get creative with this, add whatever sounds good to you!)
·  Overnight oats with almond milk, chia seeds, berries, and sliced almonds
· Mashed avocado, cilantro, and lime on toast with tomatoes and an egg
· Leftovers from yesterday’s dinner
