February was American Heart Health Month, but it was also National Cancer Prevention Month. Heart disease and cancer are the top two causes of death in the United States and both can be influenced by what we eat. Coincidentally, quite a few of the recommendations to reduce your risk of heart disease are the same as those to reduce your risk of cancer.
Maintaining a healthy body weight, being physically active, and consuming adequate amounts of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are all great ways to reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer. Additional steps you can take are emphasizing plant proteins, limiting red meat consumption, and eating at least 5 servings of different colored fruits and vegetables per day.

As spring and summer approach, it’s the perfect time to take advantage and increase your intake of those tasty vegetables that are in season! This Greek Chickpea Salad is perfect as an appetizer, a side dish, something to bring for a party, or even the main dish! This recipe provides some rough measurements, but please adjust the amount of each item per your preference and for the total volume desired. If you prepare this ahead of time, it is best to wait until just before serving to add the feta for the best presentation.

  • 1 Bell pepper (your preferred color)
  • Half of a Cucumber
  • Half of a Red Onion
  • Half of 1 container of Pitted/sliced Kalamata Olives
  • 1 can of Chickpeas (also known as Garbanzo Beans, no salt added)
  • Feta Cheese (Goat cheese may be an alternate if you are watching sodium intake)
  • Black Pepper
  • Lemon Juice to taste
  • White wine vinegar to taste
  • Olive Oil to taste
  • Parsley if desired

Chop the bell pepper, cucumber, and red onion and place into a medium sized mixing bowl. Add the olives and chickpeas. Coat with lemon juice, white wine vinegar, and olive oil. Top with chopped parsley and ground black pepper. Add feta cheese just before serving.

HMR programs help individuals achieve fast weight loss in a livable way by encouraging people to eat more and stay satisfied, which makes it easier to stick to the program in the short-term, and over the long haul.
According to LIFT Weight Managment and LIFT Wellness Center Director, Miki Martin, "Losing weight quickly is incredibly motivating. It can help people stick with their diet longer, which is especially important if you have a lot of weight to lose. Many of our clients have 30, 40, even 100 or more pounds to lose, so fast weight loss is important to keep up momentum." Miki also adds, " It's a common misconception that fast weight loss isn't healthy or sustainable, and that it will lead to weight regain. That is simply not true . Studies have shown that following a lifestyle- change program that promotes fast initial weight loss is associated with better long-term success.

HMR focuses on three skill areas critical for weight-loss and weight maintenance:
  1. How to make healthier food choices
  2. How to eat more fruits and vegetables
  3. How to increase physical activity

Research has shown that practicing these skills may also help reduce the risk factors for the development of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some types of cancer, and other chronic diseases.

Zumba Kids classes feature kid-friendly routines based on original Zumba choreography. We break down the steps, add games, activities and cultural exploration elements into the class structure.
