Patient Spotlight
Jennifer Hale
Jennifer has lost 15 lbs. in 5 weeks!
Here’s what she has to say about the program:
I had put on some weight before and especially during quarantine. The final push I needed to join the program was moving to working from home towards the end of August while my kids started doing virtual school.
I knew that it would be very hard for me to not eat and snack all day long. I needed more structure while I was home with easy access to all the kid’s snacks.
My goal is to lose about 30 more pounds.

WHY FAST WEIGHT LOSS WORKS
HMR programs help individuals achieve fast weight loss in a livable way by encouraging people to eat more and stay satisfied, which makes it easier to stick to the program in the short-term, and over the long haul.
According to LIFT Weight Management and LIFT Wellness Center Director, Miki Martin, "Losing weight quickly is incredibly motivating. It can help people stick with their diet longer, which is especially important if you have a lot of weight to lose. Many of our clients have 30, 40, even 100 or more pounds to lose, so fast weight loss is important to keep up momentum." Miki also adds, " It's a common misconception that fast weight loss isn't healthy or sustainable, and that it will lead to weight regain. That is simply not true. Studies have shown that following a lifestyle- change program that promotes fast initial weight loss is associated with better long-term success.
HMR focuses on three skill areas critical for weight-loss and weight maintenance:
- How to make healthier food choices
- How to eat more fruits and vegetables
- How to increase physical activity
Research has shown that practicing these skills may also help reduce the risk factors for the development of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some types of cancer, and other chronic diseases.

Eat Better, Eat Together
October is the start of so many wonderful things like fall, cooler weather, soup season, and Eat Better, Eat Together month!
The goal for Eat Better, Eat Together Month is to encourage coming together and sharing a meal. Sharing meal times is so important for our overall health; eating together can improve communication and strengthen family bonds. It can also improve eating habits, willingness to try new foods, and can increase fruit and vegetable intake while decreasing intake of trans fats, sugar, and salt! Though kids benefit greatly from family meal times (such as improved grades and less involvement in high risk behaviors), adults can also benefit through reduced stress and stronger relationships.
Though there are many benefits, there are numerous obstacles. Busy schedules, picky eaters, and overwhelmed parents are all obstacles that can get in the way of family dinner time. This October I would like to challenge you to work through some of these obstacles. The benefits of family dinner can still be reaped even if it’s not family, fancy, or even dinner! Spending time engaged in positive conversation while sharing a meal with your coworkers or friends strengthen those relationships.
Perhaps instead of a formal family meal, it’s just sandwiches or soup. If your nights are busy, maybe it could be family breakfast, lunch, or even a snack. To take some of the load off of the person preparing the meal, other family members could help with preparation, setting the table, or cleaning up after. If you live by yourself or need to keep your distance due to COVID, using technology like FaceTime, Zoom, or Google Meet while cooking and/or eating can also help bridge the gap and bring everyone together again.
If you are looking for more ways to get together and enjoy quality time (and quality food), or looking for some recipes, check out The Family Dinner Project online, on Facebook, or Instagram www.thefamilydinnerproject.org, @TheFamilyDinnerProject
Mushroom Stroganoff
This meal is a great way to warm up after a chilly, rainy fall day and is a quick dish your family will love!
Ingredients:
- 1 diced onion
- 2-3 garlic cloves minced
- 1tbsp vegetable oil
- 11oz fresh sliced mushrooms
- 4tbsp white wine (optional)
- 1tbsp soy sauce
- ¾ cup vegetable broth
- ¾ cup milk or cream (1% or 2% works better than skim)
- 2tbsp cornstarch
- 1tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Served over rice or pasta of choice
Instructions:
1) Heat oil in a large pan or skillet, add onion and cook for about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for another minute.
2) Add mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes.
3) Pour in white wine (optional) and stir. Add vegetable broth, soy sauce, and spice mixture, then bring to a boil.
4) Mix corn starch into milk until dissolved.
5) Pour milk mixture into the pan and cook on low-medium heat for about 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
6) This dish is best served over rice, pasta, or mashed potatoes, and can be topped with thyme or parsley (pictured).
