2023-24 LIHSA Masthead

Weekly News for our LIHSA Families

September 8, 2023

Welcome to the 2023-24 LIHSA School Year!

Rogan and Vega

For many of us, summer is a time to kick off our shoes and relax with family and friends. But we are clicking our heels together here at LIHSA because a new school year is underway! We just love welcoming back students, faculty, and staff to a fresh school year. The sense of new is in the air: new classes, new friends, new songs to learn, a new canvas to paint, and new productions to begin.

This year – the 2023-24 school year – is so much more than “new.” It’s also the celebration of LIHSA’s 50th anniversary! In 1973, Nassau BOCES established what was then known as the Cultural Arts Center to be Long Island’s first (and only!) public school dedicated to the arts. Our Founding Principal, Ava Favara, created a space where artists, dancers, musicians, actors, could find each other, learn together, and help each other be their own best selves. As we celebrate our golden anniversary, we will look back with gratitude and look ahead at LIHSA’s future with anticipation. All while rejoicing in our current students and cheering them on as they learn, stretch, grow and accomplish so much over these next months.

This weekly newsletter will be a space where you can find out about upcoming school events, read about what’s happened recently in LIHSA’s classrooms and studios, learn about student and alumni accomplishments, and even find our picks for arts happenings around the community. This fall you’ll also get to read a lot about the return of our beloved Broadway Supports LIHSA event on November 6, our Spring Scholarship Gala on April 12th, and our culminating 50th Anniversary Event in June!

But we are getting ahead of ourselves. We’re just at the end of our first week of school. We hope you get a moment to kick back off your shoes and enjoy the weekend!

Warmly,

Laura Vega & Lindsay Rogan

Opportunities For Students

The Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge, presented by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in partnership with the National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT), is an opportunity for high school students all across the country to develop and showcase musical compositions that could be part of a musical theater production. Submissions will be judged by a panel of leaders in the musical theater field — including NAMT members and festival of New Musicals Alumni Writers, among others — who will select the Challenge’s winning writers/writing teams. Those writers will be invited to New York City in June 2024 to work with mentors, culminating in a concert of their songs.
