Howdy L4 Lions,

Well, Covid tried, Hurricane Hilary and “Hurri-quake” tried, and still, here come the Lions!

When you’re ready to fully embrace “Your club – your way”, let’s share the experience together. Some of our clubs function very well when it comes to meetings, some maybe are ready to embrace

some level of change. Being somewhat realistic, if our meetings don’t entice a visitor or new member to get excited for service, maybe we should examine what our meetings are really saying about our club. Does our meeting really tell our story? Does our agenda and program interest the demographic we are targeting for new members? Are we having FUN?

Let’s make it our collective goal this year to hit the “refresh” button on our meetings and begin to embrace small changes on the road to making our meetings and get togethers more relevant and

exciting! Let’s learn and share together.

  • October 1 - District Leo Meeting

Hello, I’m Catherine (Cat) Badame, your District 4L4 Zone D Chair. Here are all the great things Zone D is doing.

Brea Lions – They started off the year participating in Brea’s 4 th of July celebration at City Park, running their annual Hula Hoop contest and pie eating contest and, for the first time, selling beer as a fund raiser, hoping to continue with beer sales next year and onward. They had the club officer installation at PDG PJ Smith’s home and had a good time. Together, with local business Strait Up Barbers, they held a car show at the Brea Lions Scout Center for the third year and sold beer as

fundraiser. They supported the Brea Olinda High School girls’ basketball team by purchasing an ad in their game program. They’re busy planning their golf tournament fundraiser. Four Brea Lions are on the Board of the Brea Lions Scout Center and actively participate in its management and they held a board meeting in July.

Fullerton Host- These Lions are on the move! Working on a weekly Hunger Project delivering food to Residences along with student and senior pantries in the community. In July, they joined hands in service with the Brea lions as they helped with Brea’s 4th of July celebration by giving manpower to host the beer booth and games. That same day, they also prepared and served hot meals to cover shifts for church members who were out of town for the holiday at the First Lutheran Church. Fullerton is already having meetings and getting ready for the

city Chess tournament and for the Morrison by Pete Baron. This month the club collected and donated 630 pair of glasses to CLFIS. They hosted a “meet your city notables” event featuring Fullerton’s police chief who gave an overview of current challenges facing the FPD, and his plans to deploy funds received from the county. Recently, Joy Yao, whose son won the Fullerton’s annual chess tournament for the last 7 years, was inducted. Congratulations to them both.

La Habra Host Lions - The busy little worker bees started off July with a bang joining hands in service with the Anaheim Lions volunteering over 60 hours at their firework booth, making there enough people to cover all shifts leading up to the 4th of July. On the 4th, they went to the park to make funnel cakes, hamburgers, and hotdogs at the city’s 4 th of July fireworks show. July 6 th started the summer “Concerts in the Park series.” For five weeks, in a row, they sold hamburgers, hotdogs and, of course, more funnel cakes, raising money for The Childrens Museum of La Habra. They had a great Pasta Fest event in early August, raising over $13,000 for the La Habra Senior Citizens. With the start of the

football season for both La Habra and Sonora High School’s Varsity Teams, they’re cooking Funnel Cakes under the Friday Night Lights and all the proceeds go to the football booster clubs. Sprinkled throughout the weeks, they go to elementary, middle, and high schools around the city cooking special pancake breakfasts or hamburger lunches, just about any time they are asked, which is often. Currently, they are working and planning for a vision screening at the La Habra’s Boys and Girls Club on September 9th. And lets not forget their upcoming La Habra Corn Fest, preparation is already underway

Orange County Korean American- The first service activity planned for this week is a joint effort food pantry with Vineyard Church of Buena Park at the community center. They’re hoping to fill three to four hundred cars with food. The first is an internal club fundraiser, planned for September 9 th at Los Coyotes for a golf tournament, which includes a dinner. This event raises money they use throughout the year for donations. They’ve earmarked that money for their annual donation to the City of La Habra for Christmas gifts to underprivileged children that looks to be around $3,000. They’ve planned a Social Pic-Nic for the club and will be taking a road trip to Vegas for a round of golf. There’s also a food drive coming up in January, no doubt to replenish after that food pantry.

OC Hana - No projects so far this year, but they are gearing up for the upcoming Vision Screening on November 3rd , and they are looking to have around 150 screenings performed for those who visit.

OC Marshall B Ketchum University - They returned to school just last week, but they already have their first meeting planned for this week. Already getting a move for the year, the first big project is under way. They will be joining hands in service with La Habra Host on September 9th for the big vision screening. Now that they are back in session, we will be hearing more in the very near future to SEE what they will do.

I hope I covered your club well and that there will be more to cover soon.

I look forward to getting out to some of your events to get to know our clubs and the members better.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE ORANGE COUNTY

Ronald McDonald House Orange County is built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child – not where they will stay, their next meal or transportation to and from the hospital and/or appointments.

OTHER WAYS YOUR CLUB CAN HELP RONALD MC DONALD HOUSE

The House is still under construction (and currently housing families in a hotel) but there are still opportunities to support the house. They are in need of many items including gift cards to offer to the families. Please see the attached Wish List.

They are also looking for clubs to fill snack bags for the families to offer convenient items to snack on while they are in

the hotel. Please see the attached Snack Bag Flyer.

Volunteer at our Ronald McDonald Family Room

Help us support the families of Orange County by volunteering at our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms inside Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) in Orange and Mission Viejo.

  • If you are interested in more information about becoming a weekly volunteer at the Family Room at CHOC Children’s, please email Mary Pat Dooley [email protected]
  • If you are interested in the Family Room at CHOC Children’s Mission, please email Joni Allen-Ooms at [email protected]

Keep collecting your pull tabs. The House is not currently accepting pull tabs, but i will collect them at every district meeting and turn them in as soon as possible.
