Next Session of Wednesday Enrichment Programs Begins TODAY, WED, 01/06

Notes from the Principal

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!  I hope your holidays were happy and that the new year has gotten off to a good start.  We certainly had a busy holiday season at school and are now back and into the swing of our regular rigorous routine.

We rely on parent help for a lot of the extras that our teachers plan, e.g. small group experiences, field trips, and projects.  We feel very fortunate to be able to count on parents who consistently volunteer in our classrooms.

This year, however, we are finding that many of our classroom volunteers have not been "officially cleared" to volunteer, and teachers have had to ask them to leave their classrooms or to not come on a field trip that they were planning to attend.  This is a huge issue for teachers who have planned for the parent help and for the parents who are disappointed at being turned away.

Clearance is easily obtained through filling out a volunteer application and making sure that you have a current TB test done.  We are asking that you start off the new year right, and fill out the volunteer application whether or not you have immediate plans to volunteer.  You never know when you will be needed to drive at the last minute and won't be able to help.  Please also note that volunteers must submit a new volunteer form every school year.  The mandatory Volunteer form can be found on our website at https://www.sandiegounified.org/schools/la-jolla-elementary/volunteer or by clicking here.

You will also need a current TB test.  Once tested, the results are good for four years.  Doctors and local clinics, e.g. CVS Minute Clinics, are able to administer and then read the test.

For the safety and security of our students, the law states that anyone who has contact with them must be cleared.  Please understand that you will be stopped in the office from volunteering in a classroom and will be stopped by teachers from volunteering on field trips, etc., if you are not cleared.

As always, we thank you for your continued support and your time volunteering/assisting our students.
