Greetings LLCEDC Members & Community Leaders,

Community Resiliency Project: Update

We are excited to announce that we have been selected to participate in a pilot project with our partners at Climax with the help of Better City, with the purpose of anticipating and preparing for potential threats in our community. Through scenario planning, our goal is to develop a list of actions and projects for our purpose. Such threats that will be considered include: storms, drought, civil unrest, and pandemics. On July 15, 2022, the Project's mobilization team met and reviewed the action plan, the finalization of which is set for sometime in August, and gave their feedback. You can review the input given from stakeholders and community leaders by clicking HERE.

BR&E Updates

BUSINESS RETENTION AND EXPANSION (BR&E) COMMITTEE UPDATE

In the attempts to sustain and develop our local economy, we at the Leadville Lake County Economic Development Corporation have begun work to launch our Business Retention & Expansion (BR&E) Committee. This sub Committee will orient themselves around the scope of work needed to better identify the needs and setbacks of businesses in Lake County.

In May of 2022, the LLCEDC hired a contractor to lead the Committee, and since, the BR&E Committee has identified over 500 businesses to visit with the purpose of finding the challenges and struggles they are facing in today's economy. There have been upwards of 40 site visits to Lake County businesses since the Committee's start on June 15, 2022. Common issues that have been stated include long term staffing, inability to keep up with business growth, and lack of recognition/marketing issues.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Committee continues their important work.

VERO BROADBAND TO BUILD A FIBER NETWORK IN LEADVILLE

"The Leadville Lake County Economic Development Coorporation (LLCEDC) and other organizations are serving as key partners supporting the effort of Vero Broadband to build a broadband fiber network in Leadville."

""Community - wide access to high - speed broadband won't automatically unlock better job opportunities or spur business growth, but better jobs and growing businesses can't happen without an affordable and reliable internet connections" said Jason Hall, LLCEDC board president."

RESPONSIBLE TOURISM IN LAKE COUNTY

As Summer rolls in to the high country, so do campers and cars full of adventure seeking travelers who are eager to experience what the outdoors of Lake County has to offer. Unfortunately, year after year, our land is damaged, dirtied, and left worse for wear due to reckless treatment from those that enjoy its beauty. However, much of the wear and tear can be reduced and even avoided completely with proper precaution and the right approach to hiking, camping, and other activities that draw people to our home.

From pet safety to putting out your campfire, this pamphlet from the Leadville Herald Democrat (and partners) covers a wide variety of frequently discussed issues regarding outdoor recreation and the correct methods of approach to solve them.

A big thanks to all of the partners involved in helping put this together!

Business Sale Pre-Planning Steps

A recent M&A Source study found that about 80 % of businesses on the market will never sell. This should be a huge wakeup call for all business owners. This means you have less than a 20% chance of success if you go to sell your company. One of the reasons for this is that owners don’t think about selling until some catastrophic event like a health problem occurs. Planning your exit strategy should always be a part of an entrepreneur’s startup business plan. If you do decide that your exit strategy involves selling, here are some thoughts about what you should do before the sale is undertaken.

COLORADO RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION'S IMPACT SURVEY

A message from the Colorado Restaurant Association:

Dear Colorado Restaurant Community,

We’ve been asked to take a position on proposed ballot initiative 122 by an issues committee campaign that would like the CRA’s support as they present 122 to the public.

For context, 122 would do the following:

  • Allow for the delivery of alcohol from an off-premises liquor license through a third-party vendor
  • Allow for the delivery of alcohol from an on-premises liquor license through a third-party vendor
  • Contains language, that the CRA worked on, holding the retailer not liable for a liquor violation if the retailer did what is required of them but the third-party delivery company gives the alcohol to a minor or someone who is visibly intoxicated
  • Permanently extends alcohol for takeout and delivery from an on-premises liquor license

We want to hear from you, restaurants in our community, about how 122 could impact your business. Ballot initiative 121 will also appear on the ballot in November, which would allow grocery stores and convenience stores, currently selling beer, to sell beer and wine starting on March 1, 2023.

Please take a couple of minutes to respond to this three-question survey to let us know your perspective on both ballot initiatives.
