The Second Annual Outdoor Industry Summit held in
Salida, Colorado was a Huge Success.
Sustainable processes and resources were shared via entrepreneurial industry innovators and leaders with 172 registered attendees coming from across the rural areas of our state.
Salida, September 19, 2022 - “This year's Summit was awe-inspiring, offering tools and resources for small business development and social entrepreneurism to lead a path forward by tapping into entrepreneurial energy to begin to solve community challenges facing our society,” says Jamie Billesbach, OIS creator.
Real life examples from Colorado social entrepreneurs included mountainFlow, TripOutside, Callosum, and Clif Bar & Company. Other small biz support included a statewide funding panel who showcased examples of Outdoor Industry businesses that they funded and shared how others can obtain funding. A workforce housing panel discussed what they are doing to address this industry wide challenge.
Innovation in Sustainability best practices were shared by the Editor-in-Chief of Elevation Outdoors Doug Schnitzspahn, Conor Hall, Director of Colorado’s Outdoor Recreation Industry Office, Cindy Williams with the Chaffee County Outdoor Recreation Management Plan, Dominique Naccarato, Director of Greater Arkansas River Nature Association and the Chaffee County Visitors Bureau Adventure by Nature video education series.
Industry wide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion opportunities and challenges were addressed via our Keynote Earnest House, Jr. the Senior Policy Director and Director, Center for Tribal and Indigenous Engagement for Keystone Policy Center and Taishya Adams, the Commissioner of Colorado Parks & Wildlife and a passionate and dedicated servant leader who is laser focused on liberation through connection, personal transformation, and collective responsibility.
Educational leaders from Colorado Mountain College, University of Colorado Boulder, The Wright Collegiate Challenge and Wild Rhythms explored the many opportunities in outdoor education and sustainable tourism in the Outdoor Industry.
The day was full of shared experiences of purpose led journeys with examples of what is working and making an impact. The extended breaks and outdoor exhibition hall allowed for interactive collaborations and connections with speakers, attendees, and industry leaders. Download the virtual online program packed full of evergreen resources and links to this spectacular summit.
This summit would not have been possible without the support of our gracious sponsors, a huge THANK YOU to High Country Bank, Chaffee County Visitors Bureau, Colorado Small Business Development Center, The Office of Economic Development & International Trade, JVAM a Mountain Law Firm, Colorado Housing & Finance Authority, Startup Colorado, The Wright, My Lovely Spaces, Leadville Twin Lakes, The Lobby Salida, and One More Day.

BUSINESS RETENTION AND EXPANSION (BR&E) COMMITTEE UPDATE
In the attempts to sustain and develop our local economy, we at the Leadville Lake County Economic Development Corporation have begun work to launch our Business Retention & Expansion (BR&E) Committee. This sub Committee will orient themselves around the scope of work needed to better identify the needs and setbacks of businesses in Lake County.
In May of 2022, the LLCEDC hired a contractor to lead the Committee, and since, the BR&E Committee has identified over 500 businesses to visit with the purpose of finding the challenges and struggles they are facing in today's economy. There have been upwards of 40 site visits to Lake County businesses since the Committee's start on June 15, 2022. Common issues that have been stated include long term staffing, inability to keep up with business growth, and lack of recognition/marketing issues.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Committee continues their important work.
